Perhaps they'll start to show up at some of the other etailers soon with actual availability. At least NCIX isn't gouging at the moment.

so I just ordered two 640GB caviers for RAID0
4 times the capacity
2/3rds the cost

Barracuda is just as cool. I've got one, I love it. Just as much as my Raptor.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Is it me, or the name’s plain ridiculous? Raptor was ok but... velociraptor?

I owned a 150GB raptor a year back...
not a huge difference between that and my baracuda.
back in the day most people concluded raided drives beat raptors. willing to bet it'll be the case here as well

I'm comparing 2 * 640s in RAID0
so I just ordered two 640GB caviers for RAID0
meant caviers... but point is the same.
edited my original post to make up for my inadequacy. wasn't thinking right there.

All I know is that I want two. Might wait for the 150GB version or for the prices to drop a bit on the 300GB.

I actually think the new name is quite clever. As it builds off the Raptors, in every respect.

Same here. A 150gb version would be enough for me.
Are they going to make a 150gb version?

Yea Right! $610.00 for a Raid 0 Array:rolleyes: PLLLLLLLLEASE! Would opt to get SAS Drives for that kind of money vs lowly SATA Drives:ROTF:

$610, minus shipping...it's madness. How many 320GB drives could you buy for that?....a 6 drive RAID 0?

2.5" SATA drives (quiet, energy efficient, and 300GB). I expect the prices to drop quite a bit as I have seen the current 150GB raptors go for $160 even though the MSRP is like $230..that's like 30% below MSRP.

Well...for people who earn that money in a day, $610 it's not a big deal and it's definitely worth a shot - I'm pretty sure that once you get them you would feel the difference if you go back to your 7200rpm drives. SAS is still bit exclusive so Velociraptor would bring joy to the masses.

Current hard drives are getting like AGP. They're still a huge bottleneck and they're only getting a little faster here and there.
Keep beating that dead horse guys.

The specs look great, HDDs are the week point of any PC...the issue is price and the fact you can get those ultra fast 320GB single platter drives and RAID them up like mad, even a four drive RAID 0 would be what, half of the cost of two of the VR in RAID 0?
So no WD, i will not buy until i see 150GB and god willing 74GB drives.
