Open or closed doesn't really matter.
For gaming and listening to rock like SOAD, LarcEnCiel, and High and Mighty Color.
Also, what 100ish soundcard to go with it?
Thanks :D

I own the HD555's, and I too use them primarily to game and listen to rock/indie/folk music. Highly recommended for sure.

Soundcard wise, you can either go for an X-Fi of some sort, though the other brands (Asus, Auzentech) tend to be a bit more pricy. All up to your requirements, though if drivers are one, I'd suggest skipping Creative!

They are the around the ear type (supra aural? i can never remember) and are neither bulky nor heavy. Of course, my opinion may not be relevant in this matter, as I have a rather large head! But no, I'd say they're very well-sized.

Around the ear is circumaural, like circum=around.

5.1 headphones aren't any better for soundstaging are they?

Fortunately you can build your own cross-fading unit... which is the only way to achieve proper sound-staging with headphones.

Or you can use a 1970s surround matrix receiver...
