I've had a non painted anodized aluminum UFO for about 4 years now. After all of the abuse it has taken, it is tarnished, dirty, and scratched. I'd like to paint it. Since it is already at bare metal, do I still have to sand it down or do I just apply primer, paint, and clearcoat?
Is there any good aluminum cleaner that I could use in lieu of painting it?

You will still have to sand it down so that the primer(etch primer) then paint can take hold to the case, why not get it powdercoated?

If you're going to paint aluminum it would be a good idea to get a good aluminum etching primer.
You could just polish the whole thing, that might be nice.

Autosol makes a good polisher, I use one called "Shine".
Once your done polishing you can use any car wax.
The wax will even keep finger prints from showing.
hope that helps
