HI! I am sorry to start a thread with this title but I am starting to lose my sanity and possibily end up in a cell.

I bought an asus p5k premium 0404 (bios) for a q6600

my system specs are in signature .......

As soon as I converted from the asus p5n-e sli and booted into windows I got a resolution of 640x480 on a 22" display and installed all drivers.....or should I say: the automatic installation wizard installed all drivers (windows vista 32 bit). Escept I got several problems:

- ide controller error (no matter what I do the mistake always comes up)

- cant' get the correct resolution for my monitor: at max 1680*1050 or something similar

- Ati catalyst drivers sometimes are not found

- AND FINALLY evert ones in a while BSOD when loading windows at boot.

Please help me. This is preposterous. The board is a great overclocker (I tried straight away 3600 (400x9) @ stock voltages and it worked perfectly but If I can't get windows running there isn't a point to it...

P.s. I have only 1 seagate barracuda 400 gb sata II and a cd/dvd writer as primary (and only) IDE

drivers? bios?....please help

Thanks in advance..

As far as I know the P5n series does use an Nvidia chipset, whereas your new board uses a Intel P35 chipset.

First of all: When exchanging motherboards and the new one has a completely different chipset (not the same manufacturer, not similar), its common knowledge to try to save all important data before switching boards and then installing a fresh copy of Windows. Otherwise you will very likely experience the kind of problems that you do right now. Windows doesn't really like a complete platform change. That's nothing new. Sometimes it works and sometimes it'll completely **** up you whole system.

Now that this is said and it's already too late for you:

Get driver cleaner. Start the system in safe mode and uninstall all drivers. Then run driver cleaner and wipe away all the leftover driver parts.
Then reboot and see what happens. If everything goes well, you'll be able to install the new drivers and perhaps it'll work fine after that.

Good luck and next time, take the time to plan the change. It'll save you lots of nerves and will keep you from going crazy. I know what I'm talking about, because I made that same mistake more than once, unfortunately. ;)

I thank you for your swift and clear answer but I am not in posession of a oem version of windows. I have a recovery cd of a thir party company which is supposed to work on hdds with windows vista preinstalled.

I fear (as it happened to me in the past) that if I were to format my disk that I will not be able to reinstall it.

Myabe you could shed some light on this too ....:) I am not even sure I will not be able to reinstall it but I do not want to send to the shop and spend 60 euros.

thanks anyway.

Hmm, I think I read about creating a fully usable Windows install CD/DVD, even using those OEM versions. Don't know a direct link now, though.

Edit: Alternatively you should normally be able to order a Anytime Upgrade DVD from microsoft for a few Euros and then use your own key. Should work.

thanks....however I installed windows xp. I got fed up with that operating system.

Everything is fine now.

One small (big actually) problem: I can't get th desktop image (the whole desktop) to fit my 1900x1050 monitor.....the resolution is 1680x1050 right now and this gives me two black stripes at the edge of the desktop area.

What can I do? I can't set 1900x1050 because there isn't this particular setting among the possiblities....max is 1680x1050

is it a video issue?/driver?/mobo?

AFAIK, only 24" monitors & above support other resolutions apart from 1680 x 1050. Maybe you should try the LCD manufacturer's website to see if there are any drivers for that particular lcd of yours.

Most, if not all 19"-22" LCD's have a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050. If not their websites should provide drivers for other res.

Anyways, GL

It's your VGA driver. See if you can set a custom resolution in the Catalyst Control Panel.

my bad.......The issue seemed to be in how the correct resolution was sent to the monitor. I was looking at a 1680x 1050 resolution just not correctly displayed. I tweaked the properties a bit and now it seems to work just fine.

Thanks for your help guys and be Windows vista sent to the hell of computer software!

Actually I'm using Vista right now and I like it. I'd even say that I prefer it in comparison to XP. I worked with XP for a long time, but Vista is kinda nice. I don't have any problems. Neither should you, once you got all the right drivers installed. ;)

I understand that vista is "potentially" a good os, however it is very (without need I should add) resource demanding and honestly if it is just for the aeroglass interface there are plenty of sites where you can downlod the exact same themes. If you miss the sidebar that too is available for xp. If you want directx 10 native and other features then vista is the only way....but I don't play pc games but rather work or try out new hardware on my rig, so for me (and I stress the "me") vista is useless more foten than not.

I had to modify the msconfig file to take out that damn request for execution message.

anyway now everything is perfect and I currently have all vista's gadgets and themes installed on xp.
