I have the opportunity to purchase any 771 socket proc that I want for a very good price however there don't seem to be any decent boards for these chips. I realize that they are all server chips so I am most likely just out of luck. Also I am sadly limited to just one chip so skulltrail is out of the question :( . Anyway I am looking for some type of gaming platform so if anyone has some boards they could recommend that would be great.
I dont think there is any game platform with the socket 771 implented besides skulltrail ( correct me some1 if I am wrong about this), like u mentioned 771 socket is for server platform

How about the Asus Z7S-WS (http://www.asus.com.tw/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=82&l3=644&l4=0&model=2090&modelmenu=1) motherboard? Sure, you don't get the fancy SLI-support of Skulltrail, but then again, it's alot cheaper and does have Crossfire-support.
Intel D5400XS Skulltrail Motherboard @ Newegg - $660 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121330&Tpk=Skulltrail)
Asus Z7S-WS Motherboard @ Newegg - $500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131272)
There are no single S771 motherboards built for gaming and/or overclocking, I believe. Just buy the Z7S-WS and try and get a pair of cheap Harpertowns.
well I think if u are planning to invest $500 for that board u can better get the skulltrail $660, thus u can better grab a E8400 or sumtin for 180-190 dollar? and get a cheap good p35 u will be ended up cheaper then u are getting a suitable gaming board on a 771 platform

what gains would a dual quad core with 2x 3870x2 and like 8 gigs of ram give you over an e8400 oc'd to like 4 ghz with 4 gigs of ram and a single 8800gts?

Your 771 chip might be a good price, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.
