Hello Everyone,
I was reading through this thread E8400/8500 degradation myth possibly busted? (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=179965), and now I’m a bit concerned about buying an E8400. :(
I’m not planning on going crazy with overclocking, but getting 4.0GHz on air cooling sounds really appealing and within reach. Should I go with the E3110? Or should I go with a quad-core, and if so, which one? I am looking to spend between $200 and $250 on a proc.
Thanks in advance…

If your 3dmark score is important to you, go with the Quad. All I have to say.

Hmmm, it is important to me, but more important is how my PC plays games. I am going to keep the eVGA 8800GTX from my sig below, so I should be fine with most games. But now games are using multi-cores more and more, so the proc is becoming more important.
I'm not a rabid overclocker, but I wouldn't mind getting to the lofty realm of 4GHz on air cooling. But I don't want to worry about chip degradation.
Do the E3110 procs degrade like the E8400/E8550 chips do? Or should I jsut get a comparable quad-core?

Degradation is NOT a common thing with 45nm CPU's some degrade ( mine did due to heavy voltage abuse ) some don't budge at all...
Go with the E8400 for an easy 3.6ghz if ya ya current mobo does 400FSB, more will be hard due to mobo limitations and with a quad even harder...
If you buy a new CPU go with a new mobo too...

Go ask Nezzari... who's running a (single) 9800GTX on a 3.80GHz 45nm quad-core processor about his Crysis experience. Last I've heard, the guy was running the game at 1650 x 1050 smoothly.

Don't think the 2 extra cores help in Crysis... game is so badly coded... if he wants to get a boost out of the new CPU he needs to get another mobo too... there laods of issues with Vcore and P5W sadly with the latest biosses

Considering you have a XBX2, I assume you can't go much over 430fsb, which was also the limit for my old P5W-DH.
Anyway 3.8Ghz sounds pretty good. But if you really want 4Ghz+ you'd also need to get another mobo.

If you want a really good overclock then I would recommend going with a P35 board.

Absolutely, I will be gettign a P35 mobo! Specifically, I am thinking about the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16813128059) mobo.
The only thing I will be using from the rig in my sig is the eVGA 8800GTX video card. The rest of the parts will be brand new. Newer, faster memory, new mobo, new proc, even new hard drives.
So, given that new information, what does everyone think?
Buy an E8400 and overclock the FSB to 400, gettign 3.6GHz on air?
Buy an E3110 and overclock the FSB to 400, getting 3.6GHz on air?
Buy a quad-core and get whatever overclocking I can?

I have heard great things about that board and I actually purchased one myself because of the great price. I personally went with a DS3L + Q6600 because I can use the extra cores for crunching.

Now that I think about it, the 45nm and 1333MHz FSB aspects of the E8xxx procs seems more appealing to me than a quad-core. Maybe that's silly, but it just seems to scratch my itch better.
So now my quesiton is whether or not people think the E8400 will degrade with overclocking, or if the E3110 is just better because it is binned for servers.
With TankGuys selling the E8400 and the E3110 so close in price, I don't know which one to buy.
Help please...

With a bit of Research you can find a Q6600 and take it to 3.6GHz on a good 3rd Party Air Cooler, it will be a little warmer than than the 45nm, but it will still be within Intel Thermal Envelopes, meaning under 71C.
Just don't run out and buy a Q6600, just look through this Forum to get an idea what to look for.

QUAD!!!! now ive gone quad never going dual again... (well not because its performance is 2x better because its not as lots of apps dont even use it) but it just does give you ego boosts LOL

I would recommend a E8400, They overclock well and like high FSB.
The degrading myth is just that..a myth. The facts are sketchy at best, many factors have to be taken into account....FSB, PSU,vCore, FSBT, CPU PLL, Heat, ect wich I have not seen anybody do yet for it would be a very tedious task. Bottom line it comes with a Warranty, if you think its has degraded RMA it like you would with any other piece of hardware thats faulty.
But thats my opinion, I'm sure there will be others to argue the issue shortly

I would get the E3110 and even then I would still be careful with the vcore when overclocking.

Well I purchased my E3110 from TankGuys. They are great. I accidentally entered the incorrect email address when I created my account, so I was not able to log back in after my order was placed. I emailed them using their customer support services at 6:26pm PST. They replied 11 minutes later having fixed the problem!! Awesome customer service!
Anyway, so far I have bought my Antec 900 case, and now my E3110 processor. Next up is deciding on the P35 board and memory.
