View Full Version : Zytek's Quickie Build

Welp, my trusty old eMachines is pretty much almost dead.
It will boot, but will shut itself off after 20 minutes, so I'm thinking the motherboard is starting to go.
So I need to get a quickie build, until I get a job and can get something better.
Here's what I put together.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f147/Zytek_Fan/2008-04-08_215559.jpg?t=1207717061
Not the best there is, but it works. It will hold me over until I have more money from getting a job. Wanted to try to fit in a Core 2 Duo, but my budget won't allow.
I have a tube of AS5 around here somewhere, so I'll be using that.

if u have an extra $30 ($15 affter rebate) i think that u would like the 3870 better
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103050
it will last u a lot longer than the 9600 since it has dx10.1 and more shaders
and this ram has the same chips but its cheaper, it would also move the combo with the 1218 2.6ghz into or near your current price range

Replace the Purepower with something better - like a VX450 or 550.
cheap C2d > cheap AMD X2
Only when overclocking - and for a cheap build on stock cooling I don't think there's going to be much of that happening.

Is it worth risking to go open box?
And that refurbished CM690 looks nice. It probably wasn't damaged, just a return :)

your max oc is about 3.2-3,3 with that cpu and the stock cooler works great for it, but do get mx-2 its better than as5 and has no cure time
and cm690 yes, but for MB i dont like open box unless i get in person and can return it with no questions asked

I'll chat with a newegg rep before I order tomorrow so I can find out more about that open box P5K Deluxe Wifi.
And I'll prolly go for that refurbished CM690.

i haven't bought a new motherboard for at least a year, i bought a asus 680i at mwave and it came with everything, and usually the biostar's i buy open box at newegg also the board i am using right now(biostar tf520 a2+) cost me $40 shipped to my door and it came with everything, lol, the only trouble i have had with open box motherboards is dfi's nf4 series, the ones i bought fried my processors:eek: (expert and ultra-d)

As long as the mobo comes with the driver disk and SATA cables, I'll be good :)
And the Q-Fan thing. hehe.
I've only got a copy of 32 bit Vista Home Premium (retail box), so should I get a 2x1GB kit of overclocking RAM, or should I send in for a 64 bit DVD?
edit: I'll be using WoW Glider to for my WoW characters, and it only supports 32 bit OSes, so I guess I'll get a 2x1GB kit of overclocking RAM.

if you are going to go for a 320gb drive i wold go for one of the wd single platters, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136074 its $5 more with free shipping, but i am not sure if that is the newer version of the 320gb drive though because the 320 single platter and 320 dual platter are called the WD3200AAKS

I read more on open box mobos, and as someone said in this thread, they ship with all the stuff, but sometimes in a white box.
edit: For the TIM, should I use the dollop, line or spread method?

Newegg live customer service chat was pointless. All I got were form answers.
Should I buy some SATA cables just in case?

I went ahead and ordered.
Bought a P5K-E WiFi/AP instead. $60 more, but brand new guaranteed.
I'll be running stock cooling for a little bit, which is fine, because the E2180 OCs quite well under the stock cooler, but I will grab a better cooler once I get more money
I'm aiming for 2.8ghz under stock cooler.

Plenty enough for until I can pop in a quad :D
I got some MX-2 TIM. What method should I use; spread, dollop, or line? I'm thinking dollop...
All of it is coming from Cali, so it may be here Saturday :D :D :D

I don't have any ArcticClean cleaning solution, so will rubbing alcohol suffice for cleaning the paste off the stock cooler?

I don't have any ArcticClean cleaning solution, so will rubbing alcohol suffice for cleaning the paste off the stock cooler?Sure. That's what most of us use anyway; no sense buying branded TIM cleaner if off-the-shelf works just as well.
However, note that if you've used the stock heatsink on the CPU then you're in a spot of bother. The stock TIM stuff that comes preapplied to the heatsink actually contains paraffin wax, which once subjected to heat melts itself into the crevices in heatsink and IHS, precluding other TIMs from doing so.

so if u use the stock tim u destroy the cpu, thats amazing that they would do that
so would u have to lap or use a tooth brush to fix the cpu
no way at the parrafin wax thing
ive used more then one c2d with stock then switched to a true... temps were fine after i switched
or is it a new thing?

All thermal pads contain wax - that's why, you'll note, that the three lines preapplied to the heatsink are hard to the touch and can be lifted off with a fingernail - unlike thermal paste ;)
If my word isn't sufficient, straight out of the Arctic Silver instructions (http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_intel_quad_wcap.pdf) for C2Ds and C2Qs:
Thermal pads are made with paraffin wax that melts once it gets hot. When it melts, it fills in the microscopic valleys in the heatsink with wax. To minimize permanent contamination of the heatsink mounting surface with wax, the thermal pad should be removed before it is used and melted. Never use heat or hot water to remove the pad, as heat will melt the wax into the heatsink.
