Hello everyone.

Recently I started to have some problems with my computer.

The first thing i noticed was that when I was about to do a clean install of XP, some program(s) encountered errors.

Procedure to install WinXPpro;
* Resetted CMOS,
* Rebooted,
* went into BIOS,
* Loaded default optimized settings,
* Rebooted and went into DOS with the application @KILLDISK.
* Formated my harddrives with the method "One pass zeroes"

* Booted with WinXP CD and installed accordingly.

When i first went into Windows and booted into Safe Mode, I installed the Chipset Drivers for this board i got from INTEL's webpage:

************************************************** **********
* Product: Intel(R) Chipset Device Software
* Release: Production Version
* Version: 8.3.1.1009
* Target Chipset#: X38 & 3200/3210 Chipset
* Date: July 26 2007
************************************************** **********

** (NOTE!! same problem im about to tell you about occures' if i install the Chipset Drivers from the CD, and it does not matter if i install them in SAFE MODE, or not.)

* Then i rebooted, installed the Network drivers, rebooted, installed the audio drivers, rebooted and installed the Graphics Drivers and rebooted. (Just to make sure).

When I then entered Windows and installed my Antivirus Program (F-Secure).
A little while after that (~5 minutes), an error occured. A popup went up and in that window it said that "START MENU MANAGER, has encountered a error and needs to close".

I tried google on it but I didnt find anything that made sence, it seemed like Start Menu Manager was a free application that was available for download on some free websites.
**(NOTE! I never used such applications)

*** HERE IS WHERE THE TRICKY PART BEGINS ***
Well about that,, I installed Battlefield 2 and every single driver was up-to-date and every single driver had been installed with caution.

I went inside the game and started playing; Now to the REAL problem::
When im playing Battlefield 2, (Or any other games, like: Crysis)
The game randomly freezes for approximately ~0.5-1.0 seconds, and while its freezing i hear a buzzing sound comming out of my speakers. (;BBbzzzzzz)

*** NOTE!! I had the Performance window through the WINDOWS TASK MANAGER, and I noticed once in particular that a minor SPIKE of CPU USAGE went up a notch on each core for a second and then went back down to normal. Any hints?

I also tried setting the core affinity from 4 to 2, but without any results.

Then the game works perfectly again, (Except that in Battlefield 2, all the perople and the vehicles start to wobble(lagg) forward and backwars for about 10 seconds after the freeze. (RATHER ANNOYING)

I tried to change my video drivers. * I had the v169.21 Forceware drivers from nVidias webpage, and then * I tried the v169.44 BETA forceware drivers Without results.
(I can asure you that the drivers we're correctly uninstalled and installed)

I tried changing my Resolution to 800*600, I tried changing the RefreshRate on my screen, I tried setting Antialiasing @ 0, I practicly tried every ingame setting..

Another thing worth mentioning that spooks my computer ATM. :
* Sometimes when im browsing through my harddrive (C: or D:) the window turns BLACK,
* see Screenshot below:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v422/MysLex/error.jpg

And sometimes when im Browsing through webpages, Mozilla firefox Freezes for approximately 3SECONDS, when i try to click anywhere, it says in the title field : (... IS NOT RESPONDING) And seconds later it starts to work again.

I thought the problem could be caused by some hardware problem, because of the stress its beeing put on while playing these kind of games so i decided to stresstest the computer and see if any errors occured with PRIME95:

@ STOCK settings PRIME95 ran on all four cores for 10h++ without any error @ BLEND
@ 2.8GHz ( DDR2-946 ) settings PRIME95 ran on all four cores for 10h++ without any error @ BLEND
@ 3.0GHz ( DDR2-1004 ) settings PRIME95 ran on all four cores for 10h++ without any error @ BLEND

My Graphics card is running @ Stock speeds, doesent help my case to clock it up to 700/1500/900 either.

I clueless and i have no idea on what to do. These kinds of problems: you dont want to have while playing FPS games(or any other game for that matter), it seriously mess with your mind. I dont know how i possibly could explain the feeling of the computer totally Freezing for ~1 second while in a rather valuable situation ( Win or lose )

Now Im desperately seeking help..
Please anyone know what could be the problem? I'll do anything. Any submitions is welcomed!

EDIT: Typos, additional information #1
EDIT: Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forums, I tried to find a suitable one but i got lost, feel free to move this post accordingly. Thanks. #2

Yours sincerely,
Alexander

Can we get a dump of your DXDIAG?

From what you've got above, it sounds like either a graphics subsystem error, a borked Windows install or a virus.

Have you tried running 3DMark06 to see if that locks up?

SoulsCollecting,
Thanks for your post!

A dump of my DxDiag file, Do you want me to attach the whole file here?
Sorry, Im not sure i understand you, if you could clearify for me that would be great, thanks.

I will try to run 3Dmark 06 right now and see what happens.

Also worth mentioning could be that i checked the Windows Event logs and it shows no errors what so ever.

EDIT: Here is a screen of my System tab in DXdiag

Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Save Info -> Save to somewhere and either copy the text of the file here or upload the .txt file to somewhere we can access.

Why are we going into safe mode to install chipset drivers?

no particular reason, It was just something i thought could help when the problems occured in the first place,, I have the same problem still if i dont install them in Safe Mode,,

As i said im out of clues and im trying everything. Im currently scanning my HDD's with HD Tune, but it does not look like theres a problem so far,,

Ok, so your memory and CPU are stable, and 3DMark has no problems. That means it's probably not an issue with either your card or your system in general when taking into account that these issues have only started since your Windows reinstall, and that means software error.

Are you getting these odd issues in all games you try to play? Have you tried other games apart for BF2 and Crysis?

Soul,
Youre probably right. I just did a HDD scan with HD Tune and they show no fail what so ever, everything is GREEN :up:

Im gonna burn a MEMTEST86 cd and run some Tests there aswell to completely eliminate any Hardware issues. Is there anything else i can do on the Graphic card to ensure thats not the problem?

ATI' tools Scan for Artifacts, is that anything i should check?

Anyway,, I tried Pristontale (a rather old RPG game, and i dont seem to get any related problems there, i get another error there,, kidoff.. Each time i write something in chat, and press ENTER, the game flimmers for a milisecond,, (Graphic bug?)

Another thing i should ask, How big difference does it to if i clear my HDD's with @Killdisk before i install WinXP? any at all?

Hi Emerica,

that'd be my 4th time, :p: but i think im going to do it tonight anyways. Then ill skip installing drivers in Safemode, Check BIOS settings trice,,

Could anyone confirm the difference with wiping the HDD's with @KILLDISK and windows partitioner?

IS it even worth running @KILLDISK?

ATI' tools Scan for Artifacts, is that anything i should check?There's not really anything designed for stress-testing GPUs - ATiTool can be useful, but mostly you just put them through a gaming session or 3DMark. If 3DMark is OK then you should be fine.

Anyway,, I tried Pristontale (a rather old RPG game, and i dont seem to get any related problems there, i get another error there,, kidoff.. Each time i write something in chat, and press ENTER, the game flimmers for a milisecond,, (Graphic bug?)
You're the best judge - we're not there experiencing it. It doesn't sound like the other problems you're experiencing, so my vote would be unrelated.

Another thing i should ask, How big difference does it to if i clear my HDD's with @Killdisk before i install WinXP? any at all?
It shouldn't hurt, but it won't make any positive difference to performance or reliability above just using the Windows format utility. That kind of wipe is really only used when you want to ensure confidential information is removed from a HDD beyond any possibility of recall, not for prepping for a Windows installation.

@killdisk is a low level formatter... if it didn't help the first time i would doubt it would help now... all it does is ensure that there is absolutly no data on the drive... can be helpful with hdd issues but i would say it probably wont help if it didn't the first time... been known to be wrong though... if you drive is unstable a low level can fix it sometimes... or kill it...

Ill still run that MEMTEST86 and check my mems, after that ill reinstall XP again. Dont think theres much else too it. If the problem still remains, i'll have to disable my AV.

Thanks for everyones input. Ill be back to bump this thread with any problems and future results.

after you reinstall just try the games before you install your AV... shouldn't need it unless you plan on surfing before benching... actually don't install anything except a game and drivers after your fresh rebuild... that will tell you if its software...

jbarlet,
Im back with an update.

I reinstalled everything accordingly. Unfortunately i didnt get to read your post before it was allready done.
I installed the drivers and everything. It got to the point where i needed to install my AV. So i did, and this error occurred again after the installation was done:
* "Start Menu Manager has encountered an error"

I went into BF2 and played some. The stuttering and buzzes we're less. but i still noticed them sometimes.

I then installed Assassins creed. I dont seem to get the stuttering here as much as i do in BF2. I cant even tell if i felt it at all. I thought i heard some very small buzzes approximately 1~2 times. nothing noticeable.
HOWEVER after playing Assassins creed for approximately 1 hour, I started to see glitches in the graphics wherever i turned my head. Ill attach a Screenshot of what they looked like.

I was running the game @ highest graphics 1280*1024, and sampling 3/3,
Graphic card settings @ STOCK

SCREENSHOT:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v422/MysLex/glitches.jpg

Im just very clueless atm. My AV couldnt have made those glitches in the graphics,, it might prevent the stuttering. but seriously whats going on with Assassins creed. Never seen it in any other game (crysis etc)

Sincerely,
Alex

In regards of the Anti Virus Question:
If im going to uninstall my AV, thats fine. But if it turns out that my AV is causing the stuttering,, I still would like to be protected somehow. I simply dont trust the Windows Firewall (CRAPCRAPCRAP!), So I thought,, there must be something to protect me..

If there arent any Free protecting applications from virus and portscans(Zzz) that anyone can recommend, Id have to reconsider buying a new form of protection. Either by its free or if it costs, Please state your thoughts here in advance.

Sincerely,
Alex

would definatly check that! if you have a second monitor you can hook up temporarily you can use that to watch your favorite monitoring program and windows taskmanager on it while you are playing... can really help the trouble shooting...

AVG Free is all i use on every machine i build and never had anyone ever complain about any issues... viral or otherwise... would definatly recommend it! :up: However i may also advise looking elsewhere as since the release of version 8 they appear to not be creating anymore freeware versions after 7.5 :shakes: ... i hope not though :shrug: ...

Thanks for everyones post.
Last night i did a clean install on WinXP again.. (lol), everything went OK, and i got into windows and i isntalled the drivers accordingly, then installed BF2 (without any AV), this stuttering i noticed before was nearly gone, i still can feel it sometimes, i think about it alot but im starting to think its the games fault somehow. Im not getting these stuttering in Assassins creed however..

After a long set of gaming , say 8 hours straight gaming,. my VGA temps according to Rivatuner lies between 51-57*C
Its VERY rarely it goes up to 57, actually i only saw it once when i played crysis on highest for approximately 6 hours straight.

I would say average temp is around 50~*c which i found pretty suitable, dont you think? Im not using stock cooling however, im using a Zalman VF1000 HS..

It now seems obvious that its some sort of CPU problem,, As i noticed before i got a "lag spike" in Windows task manager under the tab CPU Usage when the stuttering occurred. I havent seen the spikes lately though.
They only seem to happen when something heavily is raining down, Like when Artillery hits exactly my spot, and 10~ ppl die around me. Or when there is alot of action going on in my area;

Say for example its the start of a new round and everyone is throwing grenades, When half my team explode of a Grenade, the stuttering seem to occur..

Temps really seem fine to me in any way..

One thing tho. IF I REMEMBER correct.. I once installed aBIT uGuru and i got alot of "aBIT uGURU has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages in windows, and i couldnt seem to run it. Also after i installed uGuru, the BIOS now read STOCK CPU clock as actuall 272*9, when it clearly says 266*9 in the headline :confused: thats approximately 2% boost, and i cant remember it was like that before, Could my problem be connected to the faulty installation of abit uGuru application?

Even though i formated my computer several times, the 2% boost of my standard clock in BIOS dont seem to go away.

ALSO when i now reset CMOS, BIOS automatically check the setting "Enable monitoring/shutdown for CPU-FAN", It was not like that before,, thats also new, and i believe that also happened after i installed uGuru application.. Any thoughts??

So to summarize, i rarely think its a Heat issue;

NOTE !! (I dont have uGuru installed atm, but i have a screenshot of my temps as from before)

(According to uGuru)
System ~25-30*c
PWM ~30*C
CPU ~25*C

(According to Core-Temp) --- HIGHEST TEMPS
--- After 10 Hour stresstesting with Prime95(four threads)
Core #1 ~58*C
Core #2 ~57*C
Core #3 ~58*C
Core #4 ~59*c

@ 3.0Ghz

(According to Rivatuner)
VGA highest temp 58*C
--- (after 6hours of Crysis gaming)
~AVG 50-54*C

Also the stuttering occurred when AV not was installed.
Any thoughts at all? will be running Memtest tonight

Also thanks to everyone who suggested AVG av, Works great so far!

(EXCUSE ME FOR ANY TYPOS~)
Sincerely
Alex

i wouldn't worry about the stock clocks in uguru mine does the same thing... i think it just finds the nearest stable frequency in the 2.4 range and runs with it...
so its a physics issue huh... temps all seem fine... can we get cpuz and gpuz screens?
have you checked out your vdroop? mine isn't too bad and i haven't heard too many complaints on these ip35 boards but you may have a bad one...
have you updated your bios recently? could explain some stuff and that strange setting being reset...

jbarlett,

I have not updated my bios lately, I still have bios v14 wich the board came with..

Im not so sure about my vdroop tho.
I took some screens of GPU-Z and CPU-Z under different types of situations:

This is a screen of GPU-Z:

This is a screen of CPU-Z while IDLE(speedstep enabled):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v422/MysLex/cpu-z.jpg

This is a screen of CPU-Z while working. EX: Browsing through HDD(Not full load):

This is a screen of CPU-Z while under full load (testing with PRIME95 on all four cores):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v422/MysLex/cpu-z2.jpg

The Vdroop Changes under load from 1.250 - 1.220 (I observed it only for approximately 5minutes~)
Im going to check out of it drops even more when gaming and perhaps if it drops together with the stuttering..

Im not sure how to check temp on my Chipset. Any how-to?

I did some Memtest for win running as hstuehmeyer suggested. heres my results. NO ERRORS 100% for 25 minutes~

i'm pretty sure you can check you nb temp in bios so uguru should be able to do it to...
is speedstep enabled on your board? :eek: cause thats prolly your problem... load drops so your proc throttles back and cant throttle up fast enough to process the massive physics a game can produce!! try turning that crap off in bios you don't need it anyway and see if stuttering is still there... would bet it will be gone... :up:

in your bios go to
Advanced BIOS Features->CPU Features->
disable C1E Functions and EIST Functions
those should be disabled because they throttle back your processor when it feels its in a idle state... really good explaination of the two if you are interested here:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2725
that could definatly cause the stuttering you are seeing... its great idea for the average home consumer, but really sucks for us...

Hi im back with an update.

To set my settings straight in the BIOS did help, I didnt experience as much stuttering as i did before, i can really tell the difference. However. its still there sometimes.
I think we together eliminated the most possible things that could have been my problem.

Im going to keep it like this for a while and see if the stuttering keeps happening as much, or perhaps in other games. If so i will be back to bump this thread and i will try to explain as detailed as possible again since the major information allready lies in this thread.

However, If someone happens to read this long thread and thinks of anything that we have missed. PLEASE tell me and ill try it out :) Everything is welcomed.
I will still remain active in this thread and see if anyone else replies.

However, Id like to thank everyone again for being so cooperative and friendly.
