well I'll be ording a few new drives etc. and I'm thinking about making linux(or BSD) my main once again.

any suggestions for a relative beginner at *nix. I've gone a month before on solely *nix, i know most of the basics and I havea good hang of things. I know enough to get drivers installed on both ubuntu and PClinuxOS on an 8800. Basically I'm looking for something that's stable, supports the atheros wireless chipset(i need internet to get anywhere, fortunately a lot of stuff seems to just support that out of the box now) and is efficient. WIlling to give most of anything a try, solaris, *BSD, you name it.

also thinking of going with a x86_64 distro version since i've got tons of RAM and well. may as well.

Ubuntu I would say, although I x64 is not too stable in the current release. The next Ubuntu 8.04 should be out by the end of the month, and is there Stable (LTS) release. I would try that. The x86 version beta was very fast and stable for me.

I was in your same position for a while, for about 2 months I ran Debian Testing AMD64. That is the distro I recommend.
