Hi guys

im wondering if someone can advise me on something i want to do. im looking to buy possible an HD3870 or an 8800GTX, i want to do my gaming on my 26" lcdtv. i currently have it running on an x800xl with a composite RGB S-video cable, and its horrible! my question is, if i buy a 3870, can i use a hdmi to dvi connector and get better resolution? its currently @ 720x480p 60Hz on my TV. my TV has hdmi and composite imputs.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks

well 720x 480 looks bad anyway.. HDMI should look better, but really, at 720x 480 not much looks all that great. Especially if you are used to gaming on a 20in monitor, with a decent res.

yes i use decent res, iv managed to get it to work at high res now, but its laggy because of it being composite. with the 3870, can you convert the dvi to hdmi? should stop it lagging?

i have a lead that converts already iv tried it in my x800 but obviously dont work.

I'm not sure about the 3870 but GeForce 9600 have preinstalled HDMIs so maybe you'll try one ?

hey, thanks for reply!

9600 is a bit down on power for my new hardware specs i want, id have to strech out for the 9800, and tbh i didnt wanna spend that much on a card.

the HIS 3870 comes with a dvi to hdmi converter... haven't tried it yet but imagine it works great!

Beware that some TV's don't like pc's hooked up to the HDMI input. It's a common problem with alot of sony's. I tried to hook mine up via hdmi, and component and no matter what resolution I set it at the picture was distorted. It will only work with the vga port on the TV. Not saying this will necassarly happen to you just thought you should be aware it's a possibility.

thanks for both replys!

it works high res fine with component, but its kinda choppy gaming! res is very nice though. i have a Bush TV

i have a dvi to hdmi cable, its a bit hard to push onto my dvi connector onto my card, dont seem to go fully on. ati control panel detected it, but no picture on my actual tv yet.
