I'm going to replace my old and great CRT with a LCD big enough to NOT have to CTRL+ with firefox all the time when surfing the web. That size is no less than 26 inches, with 1920x1200 resolution.

I was almost set on the Samsung 275T. But that's still quite expensive. I noticed that Samsung made a 26" model (SM2693HM), and also my retailer has a Viewsonic 27.5" which seems to have a fast panel.
I do NOT watch any movie on the computer so I dont care about video quality, but, i DO CARE about gaming, so I need the fastest panel without trail.

What would you choose between:

Samsung S275T - 27" (700€)
Samsung SM2693HM - 26" (530€)
ViewSonic VX2835WM - 27.5" (490€)

+anything from dell?

PLANAR PX2611W 26", probably can be had for about $800 to $900 U.S.

Long thread in hardforums. Good panel and supposedly has no lag associated with it and a crystal nice picture for gaming.

That planar has the same panel as the acclaimed NEC 26 inch it just doesn't do the internal processing so it is faster for games. That is the one I'm considering if I don't go for the NEC.

Please remember that I'm in europe and prices/availability is much different for brands. Planar probably doesnt exist here (never heard of). Haans I dont trust the brand.

I would settle for a 26" only if it is 100+ euros cheaper than the Samsung 275T.
I'm curious about the difference between the two samsungs mostly.

I'm also in the market for a good 24-26" gaming panel. My choice stands between the Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM and the Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM. :)

What screen do you guys recommend? Any other suggestions? :)

I bet there's a new dell in this size. I just didnt google much. I found interesting the huge price difference that 1 inch can make.

Did u find any review of the new samsung 26"?

The Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM you mean? :)

I've seen one of the 24" Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM, but not the 26".

There aren't any LCDs for gaming at that size that I've read. The consensus I've seen is that the best LCDs can do for gaming are 22" screens. LG L227WT. A WTF is LG has segmented the market, and are only selling the glossy LG L227WTG in the US. Those in Europe get the better against eye strain matte model.

Hmm... my CRT is accusing the time and I dont want to bring it to a revision (its a bit heavy). For sure I need at least 26 inches.

It seems I should wait longer for the bigger screen panels to be excellent for gaming?

Note I said best LCDs can do; even the best available are subpar because LCDs are capped to 60Hz. The LG example I gave has low response time and no lag, but like any LCD, even it is still capped to 60Hz update rate.

I think there are 100hz lcd panels around, maybe not yet in the computer market (strange).

Nope, they're using fake marketing term with their "100/120"Hz label. They stick a black frame in between the 50/60 shown frames and are calling that 100/120Hz. It reduces the ghosting artifact on LCDs, but they're still only showing 50/60 Hz.

I checked the pixel pitch and some reviews. The Samsung 26" seems to have a slow screen, not good for gaming.

The 275T is still the best but no usb hub :(((
I will greatly miss, i use all 3 ports on my CRT hub. Seems I gotta buy an external hub (more stuff on my desk)
bad bad.

The viewsonic has no DVI input: wtf? are they dumb? Price is excellent btw. I'm checking reviews now.

120hz lcd tv's (1080p) are at a price premium right now. starting at 40" i think.

wow here's a used one (57" 120Hz 1080p) for $880 aud, that seems too cheap...:para:

You really should put 120Hz in quotes.

120 Hz is a relatively new technology.
120 Hz TVs use a variety of techniques to do 120 Hz: frame repetition, black frame insertion, gray insertion, or motion estimation/motion compensation.

?
still more frames; i wonder which ones do it best?

it's supposed to reduce motion blur isnt it, although i wonder whether the other parts of the lcd can handle 120hz refresh with all the lag inherent to lcd response and image processing.

120 Hz

Some displays cut the amount of blur while adding to the latency by inserting in-between frames. For instance some LCD TVs supplement the standard 60Hz signal by interpolating an extra frame between every pair of frames in the signal so the display runs at 120Hz.[12] It's notable that this solution is adequate for movies (which must have blur to begin with to solve double imaging problems with higher shutter speeds on film) but not for video games, which require less than 1 frame or 16.66 ms of lag for optimal playability.[citation needed] [13]

One possible advantage of a 120hz display is superior conversion of the standard 24fps film speed. Usually movies and other film sources are converted for home viewing using what is called 3:2 pulldown which uses 4 frames from the original to create 5 (interlaced) frames in the output. As a result 3:2 pulldown shows odd frames for 49.98 milliseconds and even frames for 33.33 milliseconds. At 120Hz 5:5 pulldown from 24fps video is possible[14] meaning all frames are on screen for the same 41.65 milliseconds. This eliminates the jerky effect associated with 3:2 pulldown called telecine judder. However, to use 5:5 pulldown instead of the normal 3:2 pulldown requires either support for 24 fps output like 1080p/24 from the DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc player or the use of reverse telecine to remove the standard 3:2 pulldown. At the moment few TVs support 5:5 pulldown [15]. However, some TVs do 3:3 pulldown at 72Hz or 4:4 at 96Hz.[16] While several TVs offer 120Hz and claim to eliminate judder (eg. Sony's MotionFlow), almost none of them use 5:5 pulldown except for one Japanese Toshiba set[17].

Incorrect. It is not more frames. It's still only 50/60.

adamsleath

with additional frames inserted, even if they are black

:moon: yes it's a rude emoticon

yeah 'it' still is only 60 hz unfortunately of real? game frames, and only 24-30 real video frames

It's notable that this solution is adequate for movies (which must have blur to begin with to solve double imaging problems with higher shutter speeds on film) but not for video games, which require less than 1 frame or 16.66 ms of lag for optimal playability.
:ROTF:

show me an lcd with less than 16.66ms of lag.

The LG I referenced is supposed to have zero lag. With response time and lag taken care of, the only speed issue left is the cap on update rate.

Responsiveness

LG has sped up the already fast TN panel on the L227WT using overdrive, achieving a response time of 2 ms. The adjustment of the overdrive is almost perfect: no streaking is visible in synthetic tests and the only thing that remains is the usual motion blur that is associated with LCD monitors, but this is also minimized in comparison with slower VA and IPS models.

If you have already thought to yourself that the very good response time is spoiled by input lag, you can rest easy: in a stopwatch comparison, the L227WT runs synchronously with a CRT monitor and we can eliminate any noticeable lag for movements and volleys of shots in action games based on the model’s performance.

In short: even for extreme hardcore gamers, the LG L227WT is absolutely suitable and can be used without any limitations. Users who are not happy with this LCD monitor in this context should stick to tube monitors or question their skills.[:(]

still the drawback of viewing angles...but^ concurs re lag.

Conclusion

The results of our tests confirm the details provided by the manufacturer: the LG L227WT is an entertainment monitor which is a shoe in for hardcore gamers thanks to its very good display of fast-paced action games and zero input lag as well as its excellent interpolation.

Yep, there's still more to do in improving the visual aspect as well. I wonder if someone will perfect an LCD before they move on to other tech. In the meantime, the only options are to settle for best of breed or stick with a CRT.

this youtube video at the end of it shows this lg 227 viewing angles; they look quite good actually from left to right and from top to bottom looking down, but looking from bottom to top is very bad...but all things considered looks like a v. nice panel for the price. so long as you tilt the panel so that you are looking 'over' the panel rather than from 'under' the panel so to speak.
im sold for now; just have to wait for it to hit the shops.

Thats just 22 inches! That's ridiculously small for me.

BTW, i finished reading reviews on that viewsonic in the list. Would be good for gaming, but has colors out of whack. So The samsung 275T still owns.
