i would guess, electrical/computer engineering, then doctorate in a program that covers ?mos and gate design

You don't need a doctorate to be a hardware engineer.

Major in computer or electrical engineering. Intel and AMD and other hardware manufacturers hire both.

I would say significant knowledge beyond EE or CE...

But EE is allways a good start.

Im hoping to at least have something to do with hardware design in the future, thus i am going to be doin CE at RPI next year. CPU is rather specific so i would say you want to get in to the general field of CE/EE (as others have said) then pursue the sub-field you enjoy most.

I know my school has some processor development class or something like that. Apparently they actually make processors too.

Id say other schools do as well.

Elec Eng would probably be your best bet, followed by Comp Eng. Better yet, do an Elec/Comp double degree :D

Look around at different universities and see if they have anything majoring in microprocessors or the like.
