View Full Version : I need new now! But Nehalem are coming soon.

As you have seen so have I asked a lot this week.
First I planned to get e3110, then x3350, but with all Nehalem information so am I wondering; do I really need 4 cores just yet. I believe I could survive with two for let’s say 1year and then update to Nehalem and DDR3.
And why go crazy on an x2 video card now when they release 9900 within 3month.
I hate not knowing which way to choose. I like the parts in my sign, just don’t know how I should end it. Dual, quad, 8800gts or gt, or 9800 series…spend money, save money… arrr…
Please help me think. :)

nehilem will be trash the 1st use of the imc for amd was bad, and killed ocabilty, im sure that intel will be the same, and with a clock speed of 1.5ghz-2.2 i cant see it being better than whats out now

Too early to judge Nehalem I think but that being said the premium you'll have to pay for Nehalems newness will likely be too steep imo to be worth it not to mention you'll have to wait for decent motherboards to become available since it's a new socket as well.

its still based on the core architecture they just added an imc, its not like he pentium to core move

I'm in the same position
just plan to get a next gen card and wait and see what happens cpu wise before you decide on that

AMD's first K8 130nm CPU was excellent... greatly outperformed the Athlon XP's and P4's. Took a little while for AMD to get clocks up but they reached 2.6GHz @ 130nm.
Where are you getting 1.5-2.2GHz from? Nehalem will launch at 3GHz+ for the highend, Intel just demonstrated a 3.2GHz Nehalem system.
In multithreaded benchmarks, it will be way faster than current Core 2 processors.

I wouldn't put my stock in Nehalem for cheap and regular desktop systems for at least 1yr from now.
P45 refresh for C2D isn't even out.
Nehalem will definetly first come for DP systems and skultrail-like ones.
Even If they do release a desktop socket right after server parts expect to pay a LOt for that mobo and at least 1000$ for cpu.
If you don't do video edit/converting or 3d now I would get a 8500 and some cheap ram and call it a day (year) :)

im about 90% sure that that will be a $2000cpu or thats the equivalent clock with hyper transport

server and desktop parts will launch at the same time per the IDF
It will be about 30% faster than 45nm Core 2's clock for clock
First versions out will be Extreme version and cost $$$$$ But they will have open multipliers...
I'm waiting :)

I'd be somewhat inclined to buy something like an E8x00 (or even wait a bit and pick up an E7x00 for a fun dirt-cheap OCing system), a fairly cheap P35 board and wait to see what happens. Both nVidia and ATi are releasing new cards in the next 3-4 months (9900 GT200 cards from nVidia and the HD4xx0 R700 cards from ATi), so you'll only have a fairly short wait for them. Nehalem might rock hardcore from the start, in which case you can jump on it from the start and not worry about having spent a whole tonne of money on your previous CPU and mobo, or it might need a few months to mature, in which case what you bought previously is still fairly capable.

I'm not eagerly awaiting for nehalem at all.
But I'm considering a gpu upgrade this fall (with sli) when gt200 comes.

If you are always waiting for the next best thing then well...you will always be waiting. Just buy what is the best that you can afford now and it will be fine.
