View Full Version : Intel to release its own SSDs later this year

Dadi Perlmutter said that Intel will release its own SSDs onto the market place later this year and claimed that they would deliver on the full promise of solid state disk technology, unlike so many of the drives currently on the market.
Perlmutter showed a demonstration on stage with three laptops: two with 65nm Core 2 Duo processorsone kitted out with a traditional hard drive (with a 7,200 RPM spindle speed) and the other with an Intel SSDand then a third machine using a 45nm Core 2 Duo and an Intel SSD.
He ran through an automated video encoding task done in Sony Vegas and the difference in performance was quite astounding. The machine with the 45nm Core 2 Duo processor finished the task at a very brisk pace, and was closely followed by the Intel SSD/65nm Core 2 Duo combo.
The mechanical drive was orders of magnitude slower, as the two Intel SSD-equipped machines had completed the task even before it had started the actual encode process. Quite impressive, but details specifications of the machine were lacking, which makes me a little sceptical.
The drives themselves will come in both 1.8 inch and 2.5 inch form factors, while capacities will range from 32GB to 160GB. Intel says that the drives will help to increase system responsiveness and extend battery life at the same time.

:woot: That will bring SSD prices down for sure :D

Nice, we need more big heavy competitors on the SSD market!

Intel + Micron and Samsung + Toshiba are in the race......who else is joining them :D
I wonder how the tie up with Intel and STMicroelectronics creating Numonyx will affect the Market.....isnt that like Dual Citizenship for Intel

Intel blog here: http://blogs.intel.com/technology/2008/04/withdrawals_and_my_addiction_t.php#more
I quickly got used to this new way of doing things and after a short while I started to think that this was normal. Then the day came that my SSD was retrieved for data mining (that was the whole idea behind the trial) and my original hard-disk was put back into my laptop. There’s no way to feel the pain quite as intensely as having to go back – and that is why I’m particularly frustrated more than usual and why I’m so frustrated lately.

Why is it that there are no 3.5" SSDs? I mean, it would have more space or be cheaper since less dense chips can be used...

There are plenty, but only because they can be installed more easily. 2.5" has plenty of place for anything out there. the densest chips also happen to be the cheapest ones by the way, so price isn't a valid reason to not use the latest ;)

Numonyx will take a year or two to hit the consumer level and even then, Intel is big enough to market both. Think Celeron vs. Extreme Edition. :D

doesn't matter much if the cost of entry is very high imo

More companies making SSD's is not going to bring the price of SSD's down...
Only thing that will is advances in NAND...
http://www.dramexchange.com/#fprice
MLC and SLC prices haven't fluctuated more than $2 for a long time.
Samsung is the only real producer of these chips. Until Samsung is forced to speed up their turn around time for cheaper & denser chips SSD's are going to stay at a very high price.
This should excite you more than more SSD "packagers":
http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/01/intel-and-micron-develop-worlds-fastest-nand-kiss-ssd-rand/
If anyone can pull enough of Samsung's market share away to kick them into high gear it'd be Intel(for innovation) and Micron(existing fabs and capacity).

There are some samples now in SAS formate for server use at 250gig each and tear up a 15K RPM SAS drive. We might see them by the end of the year if all the OEM don't buy all of them up.

Bitmicro make up to 1.6tb using Nand but it's something like $40 per gb. or $60,000. :D

In our Forum we have a assistant from MTRON. He says after the "Cebit" the prices drop a little bit (only in germany? i donīt know).
Also he says MTRON presents the new S-ATA II-SSD (Pro-Series) with 230/200MB/s. (read/write) But i havenīt seen pics from these SSDs
Wait a minute....
Read speeds of 190mb/s from Adata and 230mb/s from MTRON sounds killer but what kind of friggin RAID 0 Controller will run the MTRON model with a resonable pricetage !? An Areca 1220 controller already peaks @ 386mb/s and costs alot of money, it will however, snugly manage 2 x Adata models @ 380mb/s. Any RAID gurus to enlighten me/us.....

I have more Questions.....
With read speeds from Intel/Micron and Adata and MTRON that high in the near future, how is the ICH9R supposed to give us such high SINGLE DRIVE reads when it has a 80mb/s cap (there is supposed to be a fix) ?
If this fix works what is the ICH9R peak mb/s ?
What is the ICH10R peak read speed supposed to be ?
Do we have to change our costly ICH9R Lanpartys many of which are still damn new ?

That explains it then, I noticed a Rev A2 ICH9R on the LP LT X48 . Anyone know its peak throughput ?

And OCZ
I wonder if 2.5 will be the new standard, if so then the case makers will have to alter the chassis to accomodate the smaller drives.
I hope i'll be able to replace my ageing raptor with a cheap and fast SSD soon.

Very soon there are going to be sold "Intel only" computers - Intel CPU,GPU,motherboard with sound,Intel Wi-Fi and Wimax,Intel Storage. What will be left ? Seems only the case.
I wouldn't be surprised if Intel didn't start to sell computers under own brand.Dell and HP worst nightmare.

When is Western Digital and Seagate going to realize they will go the way of the dinosaur unless they jump on the SSD bandwagon?
They really can't though.
They don't have fabs for manufacturing flash memory, and they aren't showing any interest in acquiring any or doing a fabless approach.
They're probably waiting for SSD prices to fall and for hard drives' market share in storage to drop off.
That probably won't happen until 2010, I would think...
