View Full Version : My PSU thinks itself hot...

My ultra X3 power supply thinks itself just too darn hot and runs the fan on high perpetually. The air coming out the back is not even warm at all, why is it cranked on high? Why won't it throttle down? It is the loudest thing in my system.

I'm pondering opening it up and putting that fan on manual control. I have a free spot for a fan on my controller. Any tips or reasons why I shouldn't do it? It is annoyingly loud for a 24/7 PC

PUH-LEEEEEZE! Could you have come up with a lamer answer than that? Yeah, all Ultra power supplies are junk just because their cheapest ones aren't Seasonic quality.....sheesh. Grow up.

The Ultra X3 line is based on Andyson server power supplies, so they're nowhere near what an Ultra X-Connect or XVS is.....the X3 series is actually very good, and even JG's site gave the X3 1kw ps a 9.5 overall score and a JonnyGuru recommended seal of approval....JG's X3 review..... (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story4&reid=41)

But, then again, I guess you just know so much more than those that actually know how to properly test and review power supplies, right?

So, I guess it's just chic to dump on a name without really having any basis of fact, hmmmm?

As for your fan being too fast....probably a fault in either the temp sensor circuit or the like. Maybe RMA it? It's warrantied for life if you registered it. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Andyson's server grade units like this one are every bit as good as just about any of the "pay more" brands I can think of.

This particular unit may have a defective fan controller... opening it up would void the warranty. I'd advise trying for an RMA before fan modding it. However, as long as you don't let it get too hot you should be ok.

Open your PSU up and void the warranty when it's obvious this is a warranty issue?

If the fan controller fails, the fan goes full RPM to prevent the PSU from overheating. This is true with all voltage controlled fan controllers in PSU's.

Call Ultra, tell them that the fan is always running full RPM and have them send you a new one.

Alright, I was just making sure they aren't normally Ultra loud (see what I did there?). I was hoping I wouldn't have to RMA, it is a very tight fit into the case it is currently in. I'll give it a little longer to see if it throttles back down, otherwise I guess I will have to get it repaired.
