So I heard that most LCDs are 6-bit per channel and use alot of dithering. Which is complete garbage.
How can I find one that is 8-bits per channel? At a reasonable response time, ~10-20ms. Not professional series.

I think this huge chart is good:

nice chart...
oo 26" acer is s-ips....24"(2423) is p-mva?
Acer AL2423W 6ms G2G 24"WS Samsung S-PVA (LTM240M2) - tft central
Acer 2423wd also looks like a tn-5ms 160/160 viewing angles.
Acer AL2416WBsd 5ms 24"WS Samsung TN Film (LTM240CT01) - NO
also advertised as AL2416WD
Acer AL2416W 6ms G2G 24"WS Samsung S-PVA (LTM240M2)
Acer AL2416Ws 6ms G2G 24"WS Samsung S-PVA (LTM240M2) 8-bit panels
AL2416WD -this one has been substituted and is a tn panel with the crap viewing angles that go along with that.
the 26" all have s-ips panels i think.
Acer AL2616W 5ms G2G 26"WS LG.Philips S-IPS (LM260WU1) 8-bit with dvi/hdcp
mmm the acer 26" is looking attractive (to me) it is $750 aud, probly heaps cheaper in other countries :(; but pixel size will be larger than 24"@19x12...so 2416w (not 2416WD) at $500ish aud maybe better - but it looks like most, if not all, retailers only carry the tn version now.
so i've crossed acer off my list now.

So what determines input lag? Is it just the rated response time?
adamsleath

dont know;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_lag
nec 20" gx2 AS-IPS...but it's expensive :(
Manufacturers only state the response time of their displays and do not inform customers of the input lag value.:ROTF:
still have my 21" crt:rolleyes: which is actually 19.88" viewable non-widescreen. 4:3
that lenovo or better is the only thing that interests me (but it probably has input lag:doh:), but im not paying 1000 bucks...maybe $700aud maximum; ideally 500$ or less.
so; if wiki is right, you want s-ips plus no overdrive. (acer 26"?; but pixel size is an issue), but cant genralise; acer 26" could be a real dog of a screen.
input lag would be a real bummer for a gaming screen.
re: Lenovo L220X
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1267220
One user here in Finland measured input lag to vary from 15ms to 47ms with average of ~29ms (only three of 18 measures above 32ms) which is on better end of VAs.

I like bigger pixels, easier on the eyes. A 26" sounds great.
Now, how would I do a good test for input lag? I want to do it at BestBuy/Futureshop.

Input lag is totally different than response time. Response time is simply how fast the pixels refresh themselves. Input lag is how long it takes for controller input to be noticed on screen. The only thing that determines input lag is the electronic components within the monitor. No specs will help you determine input lag, so you'll have to find results on the internet.
TN panels generally have the lowest input lag, but sometimes are higher than other panel types. I play on a LG 245WP P-MVA monitor, which has 24ms input lag on average. I don't notice any difference between it and a CRT.
I owned the 2025wm before this monitor and it was superb. Yes, they're discontinued.

The only thing that determines input lag is the electronic components within the monitor.
Almost true - the input devices themselves play a role as well.
I have had input lag with some mice and not others (and especially none with my Deathadder).

Yup, that's the one.

True. I should have said the only factor with the monitors themselves.

How good is that?

The 24" LG one has a Prem.MVA panel.

MVA/PVA panels offer the best balance between performance and quality. Superior color reproduction, superior black levels, superior shadow detail, superior viewing angles etc.
The refresh rates on TN panels are lower, but oddly enough there are lots that blur more than a quality P-MVA monitor. The LG for example has less blurring than most TN panels. I'll look for the comparison when I get home from work and post it. Remember that specs are shoddy at best, considering some companies use best situation examples and measurements. You really have to do your research beyond what the specs say. Nothing beats real world testing.
Input lag is one area where TN panels seem to have the upper hand on other types. However, this isn't true for all TN panels, so once again you have to look for real world results. My LG has 24ms input lag on average and I don't notice any delay. I also mainly play FPS.
I wouldn't sacrifice all the upside of a PVA/MVA panel for the slight increase in performance of a TN panel. Performance which I'll likely never notice anyways, and performance which isn't guaranteed just because it's a TN panel.

May seem obvious but the easiest to way to avoid TN panels is just to look for viewing angles >170 in the spec.

how do i find out if my dell 2048wfp is 8-bit or 6-bit ?
Soulburner
04-04-2008, 03:06 AM
2408 is 8-bit. The only 6-bit panels are TN (Twisted Neumatic).
Guys it isn't as big of a deal as you think. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference without actual testing by special software used by review sites. You are far more likely to see the viewing angle differences first between TN/VA panels. The 6-bit nature is hardly something to be concerned about.

Tell that to the dithering on my screen. It is very noticeable when working with Photoshop and you need the right colors.

It really depends on the monitor...some have good color, some don't.
What do you have?
If you want a good picture quality (oh well, as good as LCD can get) then look for LCDs with S-IPS or MVA/PVA panels at least. You will also notice that they are the most expensive ones

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A200 as my temporary workstation. I'm pretty sure it has a TN panel.
