View Full Version : Where to place temp probes?

Just got my first fan controller with a temperature readout. Where do I want to place the probes, especially for the CPU? I know that between the HSF and IHS is a no-no, but isn't the side of the IHS pretty worthless? Ditto on the NB, SB or anyplace else. I mean, you're nowhere near the ideal measurement location, so what's the benefit?
Relevant parts are a DFI X38 LT with stock board cooling, Q6600 with TRUE, and OCZ 8000 Plats. Controller is a Scythe Kama Meter.

Well you could place one right inside of the HSF for the CPU and tape one to the top of the case somewhere to monitor case temps... Other than that I think software would be better as the Q6600 already has its probes built in.

The probe doesn't need to know the absolute core temperature. If the side of the HSF is -20C from the core, you just set the fan speed relative to this delta. You can use coretemp, or you motherboard utility to determine the different.
You can think of it more as a: "When location X is this temperature, run this fan at 100%. Lower temperature will mean the fan runs slower and quieter.

Thanks guys. I figured that I could use a software monitor. I just have these four probes and a temperature gauge taking up a big chunk of the controller face, and I figured I might as well use them for something!
