I'll be installing Vista64 tomorrow, and was wondering about driver questions. Being that m new to Vista, can I just download, and install the lastest driver for Vista64 on creatives site, and thats it? No other driver to install. I thought I read somewhere that there is a alchemy thingy that vista needs for EAX, do I need this, or this is all included in the new creative driver? Thnaks

I just installed Vista + SP1 after 6 months to see if there was a improvement last week. I got myself a Xtreme music 2, just go to www.creative.com--> support ---> select your card, and do the the manual update, as they dont support 64bits OS autosoft update. I didnt found any probs so far with the latest driver, I havent tested older ones tho, since this is in 6 month i am trying vista again:P

http://www.soundblaster.com/alchemy/ALchemy is used to restore EAX in games, since MS removed DirectSound HAL in Vista, which is essential for EAX to function.

ALchemy converts EAX to OpenAL, which isn't affected by the loss of DirectSound. OpenAL is the future for 3D positional sound in games. Games that use OpenAL natively, like Quake 4, Doom 3, Prey and many more will have 3D hardware accelerated sound without the use of ALchemy. Too bad CL killed off A3D (which was imo way better than EAX).

You're Correct :up: and don't worry about the other almost right info given. Exmple;

EAX worked with DS3D and still works with OpenAL. Environmental Audio Effects(X = special effects) is merely an add-on. Alchemy isn't used to just restore EAX, its there to restore Hardware Acceleration for DS3D based Games. It converts DS3D calls to OpenAL so it can be correct done and EAX comes along for the ride. Once OpenAL is Running, EAX adds to it just as if would any other OpenAL game/s, sheesh!

Like the Borg, Creative assimilated A3D:( and Sensura. They are making great use of both Technologies (and a few others).

ALchemy is a wrapper that wraps EAX data to OpenAL data. If you're still too stupid to understand that, i'd suggest going to the official ALchemy website which will state the same.

But even then you will deny it. Really a shame and i really shouldn't paying attention anymore, as well stopping to help others, because wise guys like you are always ruining it. :down:

NO, you still don't get it, it is a wrapper for Direct Sound 3D, not EAX though. EAX is an add on. EAX runs with DS3D and OpenAL, not on its own. The only thing stupid here is your not having the facts straight and talking crap.

I have helped others here and unlike you, I'll give the links to places for even more help. The last thing I'll claim to be is a know it all. Show me someone who thinks they know it all and I'll show you a fool. Here's something to help you. I don't discriminate.

Creative ALchemy

Welcome
al-che-my [al-kuh-mee] ~ any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value. - Dictionary.com

In Windows Vista, Microsoft has decided to remove the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) for DirectSound and DirectSound3D. The HAL is the software layer that on previous Windows Operating Systems enabled an audio accelerator such as the SB X-Fi, to provide DirectSound3D applications with hardware accelerated audio.

The good news is that Creative ALchemy allows you to run your favorite DirectSound3D games on Windows Vista as the developers intended - with advanced 3D Audio processing and EAX support!

Operation
When launched, the Creative ALchemy application will search the system for supported DirectSound3D enabled games.

See, no need to call you names or try to attack you.:up:

Absolutely. A3D, Sensura, EMU and etc........................ technology isn't being wasted at all. I was an A3D Fan big time. Also, there wouldn't be an OpenAL without Creative and to their credit, nVidia as well.
