Anyone done any interesting ghetto mods they could post for a interesting read/sight.

Stuff like cutting up heatinks for cooling
Using ruber bands as hd mounts etc.

I've done a couple, dunno how ghetto they are but they aren't, what I would call, bourgeoise mods. I'll post some when I get around to it later today.

Well, I did a ghetto mod for my sister.....
I called it Ghetto-a-PC (pronounced GET-HER), she needed a PC real quick so I did this:

System spec's:
Socket 370 1000Mhz PIII Toluando (or whatever that series is called)
ASUS TUV4X Mobo (excellent mobo for PIII's, btw)
An old ATI card
512MB RAM like 168 Pin I think...
20GB ATA HD
350W PSU
LITE-ON DVD Burner
Case: some card board box's :)
Misc: Zip-ties and Duck tape (no screws...;))

hehe, it lasted for a month or so until the mobo died on me  now she's got a more modern dell that I fixed up.....
I can't help but laugh, it was fun   :ROTF:

Haha thanks! Well, when I showed it to her she was like "what the heck is that?!?!?" and I told her it was her new computer and she was like "ummm, it's temporary right?????"
lol, she didn't really care, just as long as the computer worked.... :D

Nothing that I ever post will be as ghetto as smee's creation but here's some stuff anyways:

Here's a computer that I made 2 years ago. It was designed to lay flat on surfaces but when I got a new computer, it was demoted to a standing secondary computer on my desk.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x157/gLipgLipgLip/Ghetto1-1.jpg

The harddrive is being held up using an aluminium frame which is taped to the case wall and held up using the white foam stuff. As said, it's supposed to lay flat on the table so I had to make a few modifications.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x157/gLipgLipgLip/Ghetto2.jpg

The PSU is held up by the tiny little piece of wood in one of the corners - can't wait to wake up in the middle of the night from the sound of my PSU destroying the rest of my computer.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x157/gLipgLipgLip/Ghetto4.jpg

A view from the front, standing on its side on my desk.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x157/gLipgLipgLip/Ghetto5.jpg

And lastly, the stickers that can be found on the front.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x157/gLipgLipgLip/Ghetto6.jpg

It should also be noted that the lower optical drive is in an aluminum bracket system whilst the top one is once again fastened using tape and the frame around the hole to the outside.

Another ghetto mod is the GPU cooler which I made a thread about:

That wooden case has the potential of being a real tight project i think.

inCore

Thanks boqonx. I put some serious work into it around 2 years ago but the deadline approached (was a school project) faster than I hoped and I couldn't do some stuff that I would have wanted to do.

For example, the cables are just thrown in there and it's impossible to remove the graphics card right now, without removing 9 long screws as well as more than a meter's length of glue. Things like that were hard to solve under time pressure and considering that I was 16 and that it was my first computer build ever (I had only had crap such as HP and Compaq before), it came out pretty decent.

Here is my ghetto mod. It was quite unnecessary, but did it anyway...
(I love the CRT for seeming endless precision) this is a 17 inch monitor, weighing in at 65 pounds (according to shipping)
I hope the text in photo is ledgible, I don't want to type it out. :)
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd255/soob87/old%20subaru/mv700HsinkNet.jpg

the inspection sticker underneath the heatsink is now thermal paste, remove the screw from heatsink, and sticker should be like new to read...
I added this after the bi-yearly cleaning that takes the house fire appeance off of the plastics inside, and for those thinking this 50 dollar monitor is getting cheapskated, I paid 540 dollars (without shipping) in 1999...

Long Live The CRT (especially late 1998 and newer, with the pci power standard)

Well this is mine, I call it a custom airflow redirection system. Its some paper taped together, and taped to my Freezer 7 / 80mm case fan for more airflow :p:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y234/Viper_999/DSC00388.jpg

Not bad for 10 mins work! Lowered temps around 1c idle and 3c load, so quite pleased! When I was making it, the paper was held in place just by the suction alone, which made it much easier and worked well as a proof of concept

Not sure if its the best way to introduce myself to the forum but hey, at 17 I can't throw around the little money I have so you just have to have sympathy!

I thought of making similar ducts from glass fiber and epoxy glue, the kind they use to fix boats and similar things.

How you managed to tell that appart from all other GeForce 8xxx cards frightens me  The system isn't too cheap, just saved up for a while and saved money where I could. Build cost me about £470 so not too bad!

Question, I realize the Intel fan is feeding air to the cooler but is the other fan exhaust or intake as well? Did you leave the stock fan running or did you disconnect it?

Good results for a ghetto mod, I just might try this one.:D

BigKriss
04-14-2008, 10:04 PM
The Intel feeds -The stock fan is still there and connected as per normal.Riva`d to 100% as well..
The 80mm fan exhausts or extracts the heat from the cooler fins..
What you could also try using with slightly less effeciency is a thermaltake pci slot fan mounted under the grafix card..I had that for a while but ultimately not as good as this setup..

Let us know your results..

here my ''ghetto modded'' Ultra :) .. ok just a temporary solution to find out, how this kind of ''air diffuser'' can help to lower case internal temperature

and BTW, must say, this really helps, if gotta full air cooled, and mid range
overclocked system inside such ''ill-ventilated'' case like Antec p182 (sorry didn't mean to hurt any Antec owners :) )
but if like to keep Antec stock tri-cool fans @ low- or mid rpm level to avoid of ''vacuum-cleaner'' like noize coming from (under) your desk :)

BigKriss
04-24-2008, 10:09 PM
Good idea !
Take it one step further which will produce awesome results..use a pci extractor fan under the Ultra BUT seal it to the ultra ..This way it gets extracted AND shoved outside of the case.

Remember that any substance likes the path of least resistance..So you have to help it change direction and that is where the fan comes in.

+1 for the cardboard box PC being the most ghetto.

I have two to add to the thread (links are to how-to's).

1. After getting completely fed up with the CCMOS1 jumper on my IP35-E, I went ahead and made an external switch for it (http://forums.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=133396). It wouldn't have been so bad if the ancient steel case had some room to put it where I wanted...but noo, it has to sit in the middle of nowhere and look like crap. To wit:

Hey, at least it looks ok on the outside. :)

2. The aptly named Cool Whip mod (http://forums.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=132718). From the pics, it's pretty self-explanatory. Works great for down-firing HS's like my Big Typhoon.

Around 8 years ago I became the proud owner of a new Athlon Thunderbird 1Ghz, I managed to clock this to 1.52Ghz on air. It would boot into Win98se though it wasn't stable at those clocks, (limited by the FSB of the KT7) but It was run daily at 1.437Ghz. These are the images of my "ghetto mod" cooling solutions for both the AMD and the overclocked GeForce 3. :)

That same KT7 RAID mobo and the very same processor is now in my garage, it has been running more or less 24x7 for over five years as a file server. It is still overclocked, but now at a more leisurely 1.1GHz, and with the original pencil mod that I made they day the chip was bought.

To wit:

I actually did the same kind of mod with my DFI Ultra-D some time ago, lucky for me my IP35 Pro has a built in switch on the back of the board

OO OOO OO can i show off ghetto mods!

OK up first we have probably my most ghetto mod...

HD rubber mounted (using thick mouse pad squares and double sided stickey tape) hd cooling (old 478 heatsink, put some white generic TIM and put it on there) and HD silencing (carpet padding) ALL IN ONE!!!!
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/DSCF0073.JPG

Next we have my good ole 6600gt AGP... i loved the thing i volt modded it and had it ocd 24/7 @ 626/1272 (not pictured is the backplate i made do to the card bending)
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/comp/gfx%20card/P3110015.JPG

Next up is the wifi card that was "propritary" to asus motherboards... turns out its USB and 3.3v
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/P2220031.JPG

Next is a 10gb maxtor hd that i put an acrylic top on... still works to this day :D
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/comp/HD/P6190117.JPG

This is from Back in the day when i ust to use an old 10gb laptop hd as my servers main drive.... complete with super quality rubber band suspension, and little mouse pad feet in case of a fall :p
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/comp/lappy2.jpg

Back to modding gfx cards.... 8800gts 640 with a 92mm fan on it....
http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/newcomp/8800/PC150160.JPG

I have done more ghetto stuff but these are the better ones... http://teamlosi.andrevas.net/pics/smiliey/mexican.gif

awesome thread. I wish I took pics of my old antec, which shocked a couple friends when I took the sidepanel off (behind mobo tray) to reveal a couple 'high density threaded anti-vibrational elasticated sound insulation pads'.... aka a couple old socks to stop the bloody panel from resonating.
There's a bunch of blu-tak and electronic tape jobs running around my case, but nothing worth a photo. The emergency HDD mouse feet and rubber suspension by nd4spdbh gets my vote though!

an experiment i did with a socket 462 setup ->

1st pic - case made of string, paperclips and 1 rubber band (i made a "case" like this for our flat computer, my flatmates loved it)
2nd pic - a heatsink glued onto the back of the motherboard with speedfan recording the temperature difference when i dropped the heatsink onto the pool of glue (42-38) and then when i turned on the fan (38-36)
3rd pic - a small cardboard box i made, sealed on the inside with varnish, then glued to the back of the motherboard, with speedfan recording the temperature drop when i filled it with water :ROTF:
and then the temp starts to creep back up on the last graph as the water warms up

temps? before/after idle/load

tested yesterday, all depends on room temp and clocks of course..

furmark maxed out 8aa 16af

fan @ max: 24°C idle (160/500) 31-32°C load (740/1075)

fan @ normal gives 3-5°C higher load.

before stockcooler (made my own auto fan profile) 55°C idle fan @ 25% load 75°C fan @ 55%

I had a bit of a problem with my Corsair HX520W psu. The 8-pin cable was a bit short for some management i was doing so i bought a 20/24pin separate power cable:
http://www.list.rs/CMS/slike/proizvodi/911.jpg
cut bits from the sides and made the 8-pin cable a bit longer:

could you pm me with a wire diagram for that? like where each wire gets hooked to on each side of the connector because I'm going to do the same thing cuz there is way to much tension on my 8 pin cable.

couldn't you have just got two more 120 fans to mount on the uncovered side of the ninja. Then it would be push pull. For the fan above the nb you can brake the bottom of it slightly so the airflow hits the nb cooler. I have the same mobo as you, i'll post a pic of my ghetto mod later tonight.

This thread is so much fun. My GTX needed some better cooling since we can Fold with them now, so I took the trusty jig saw and went to town on my old steel beast. The pic isn't great b/c my desk was in the way but it's just for amusement anyway.

http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/userpics/10080/GPUTempRed.jpg

Notice the duct tape on the metal toward the bottom of the hole? Yea, that's where my jigsaw blade broke where the steel doubles over and I (still) don't have a replacement, so the duct tape remains. The other giant hole is from the aptly named "Cool Whip Mod (http://forums.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=132718)". Am I going to repaint the side panel? Never! Ghetto-rific.

EDIT - To make up for how horribly ghetto it is, I have to redeem myself by saying the inside doesn't look nearly as bad as the outside (http://www.myalbumbank.com/albums/userpics/10080/mylittlesystem.jpg)!

Exactly. That way there is always some airflow, and changing the speed of the fan will have a larger effect on the CPU temps (so it wont have to speed up as much during load). Seems to work quite well as the PC is nearly inaudible at full load, with temps never breaking 40°C. I never tested it without the duct though.

someone suggested i should post this in here :ROTF:this is for the DSL modem and wireless router in our flat. i noticed the modem was getting a bit warm, and our connection would drop from time to time. so i decided to stick a fan on it and see if it helped.
since the filter was going to offer some resistance to the air-flow i decided to make it larger than the fan, it probably ended up with the surface area of about 1.8 120mm fans. it's powered by a USB charger for an mp3 player that broke, ie it runs at 5V. it's made of a piece of stiff plastic screwed into the fan, foam tape insulating the join between the plastic and fan, a piece of polystyrene board as a spacer, and some sticks to stop the polystyrene part from caving inwards from the pressure of the pantyhose stretched over it. the size of the gaps in the pantyhose with it stretched as it is is probably about .5mm by .5mm, ie it'll be letting through 'dust' but stopping 'fluff'. i'm hoping that as 'fluff' builds up on the filter it'll become the filter and improve the filtering power - of course the air-flow will be reduced as this happens, but air-flow isn't a huge deal with this thing.

most of the air blows into the top vent of the DSL modem, while one edge of the fan is meant to blow some air through the side vent of the wireless router and out the other side. the fan's tied in place with string, and stopped from vibrating the whole board by 3 pieces of foam between it and the dsl modem.

screws with their base roughened with sandpaper superglued onto the ram & power circuitry for cooling..
the copper plated thingy on the back is a small square cut out of something i pulled off the back of a gigabyte motherboard (it was under the CPU socket) - insulated from the back of the gfx card with foam soaked in silicon based TIM material. the metal v was part of a s939 stock heatsink. and a bit of very taut builder's twine with a dab of superglue to stop it slipping around holds it together

hanging computer #2 :D
-a stock s939 heatsink on a 6800 GS (held on with cable ties :woot:), adapted with a cardboard/tissue-paper/super-glue shroud to a 120mm fan @ 5V
-a small form factor 230W PSU with a 80mm fan @ 5V added to the side to replace the original noisy 60mm one
-CPU is a socket 754 mobile CPU, overclocked and undervolted (it runs fine with no fan at all (the original AMD fan made noise even at 5V, i assume it was a ball-bearing fan) but there's a blue-ish 80mm fan is hanging there for good measure)

there's a 7 metre long extension cable coming off one of the USB headers to a small USB soundcard which sits beside the amp in the lounge, connected to it with a 4cm long cable, to keep the sound in digital form for as much of the journey to the speakers as possible (which i only just managed to fit into the view-area of my camera).

very serious question, i'm buying a used dual orb for 25bucks with ram sinks, if i remove the old thermal pads from the mem sinks, can i super glue them on to the mem chips of my 4850 and still get cooling and oc?

AS5 works to hold them on, even in a normal atx case where there upside down

if you clean the old mem-chips off with iso-alcohol i think it'd be fine. thermal epoxy would be better, technically, but for non-critical stuff (like gluing screws to mem-chips that didn't have sinks in the first place) i reckon super-glue is great.... and it seems to handle high-ish temperatures fairly well

AC5 works upside down? i didn't think that, thats y i'm considering gluing them. in theory it works, even if i take 800grit paper to the mem chips to smooth them off wont hurt; just as long as i don't go to far down. thanks for the replys

you have to put them on and push them on good, but yes i reused my ramsinsk like 3-4 times with just AS5(and never took the original heat tape off...)

and one-two may fall off, but you can get them to stick

hollo
09-19-2008, 09:24 PM
just super-glued some screws onto some mosfets

if you do something similar remember to scrape the bottom of the screws with a file or some rough sandpaper. the glue holds much better. if you use the glue on a shiny metal surface that has a layer of oil from your finger on it some of the screws will fall right off if what they're attached to gets jolted ;)
(and i'd guess the thermal interface can't be so great either)

for comic effect you need to tie a piece of long thin copper pipe onto them with string, and then thread one end of it through your northbridge heatsink

and a stock pentium dual core heatsink on a 7950 GT  :D

screws with their base roughened with sandpaper superglued onto the ram & power circuitry for cooling..
the copper plated thingy on the back is a small square cut out of something i pulled off the back of a gigabyte motherboard (it was under the CPU socket) - insulated from the back of the gfx card with foam soaked in silicon based TIM material. the metal v was part of a s939 stock heatsink. and a bit of very taut builder's twine with a dab of superglue to stop it slipping around holds it together

just super-glued some screws onto some mosfets

if you do something similar remember to scrape the bottom of the screws with a file or some rough sandpaper. the glue holds much better. if you use the glue on a shiny metal surface that has a layer of oil from your finger on it some of the screws will fall right off if what they're attached to gets jolted ;)

Mr. "Graphics card": First Day of Spring Quarter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03602.png
It all started while someone was cleaning out the dust bunnies. He decided to make use of an old heatsink.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03603.png
A graphics card was getting ready to go back to school. Week 1 of Spring quarter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03604.png
While walking to school, he met three nasty screwdriver bullies. They popped off the graphic card's heatsink.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03605.png
He was unwilling to let go of his heatsink.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03606.png
So the big screwdriver gave the graphic card a good beating.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03607.png
He had to get to school on time. Just in case of another bunch of bullies ahead, he went to get his silver armor.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03608.png
And borrowed his big brother's heatsink.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03609.png
This time, he secured his big brother's heatsink with badass black threads.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03610.png
And armed with a threatening-looking fan.

luie
10-29-2008, 11:03 PM
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03611.png
The graphics card was once again ready to continue his journey to school.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03612.png
Other PCI cards students were scared of him so they changed seats.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03613.png
Instead of being intimidated by the graphics card, the USB thingys were attracted to his big fan.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03614.png
So, the USB thingys were all over his fan for it vibrates when it becomes turned on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03615.png
The graphics card thinks to himself, "This is the best lecture ever."

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/luigileung/05-04-01%20Gfx%20Card%20Heatsink/DSC03616.png
And the fan on the CPU heatsink died of jealousy.

The End

Have a wonderful quarter/semester back at school. :p

How about modding 7600GS and adding some parts [MOSFET and a lot of capacitors, from really small to really BIG]?
MOSFET is from dead Gf6600, because comparing 7600GS and 7600GT, both by Palit, there was clearly one MOSFET missing ;).
The rest is mostly for fun, no spectacular results unfortunately, but I'm still working on it ;).

Really mitched a notch there.. but it fitted and worked. As paste i used the stuff thats wrapped between the memory and the stock-cooler.. Really works well. Tightend it together with the screws and it works like a charm

Later on, a boostermod, since the PCI-express slot cannot deliver more then 75watts:
http://tweakers.net/ext/f/GUa0tqqw9PZmNp1p2VblaGoT/thumb.jpg (http://tweakers.net/ext/f/GUa0tqqw9PZmNp1p2VblaGoT/full.jpg)

Here's a new one. I got my open-box X38 board yesterday, and of course whoever returned it stole the northbridge heatsink... I had none that fit, so I had to rig up my own:

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/1527/ghettosr3.jpg

I got an old northbridge heatsink from a socket 939 motherboard and then cut up some old headphones. I used the insulated wire from the headphones to string up the heatsink to hold it in place. It works well, though it's only a temporary solution.

the trusty waterblock in action again, but this time i've made a vgpu volt mod to my HD4850 it seems to overclock pretty well with just plain water cooling..btw the voltage that was used was 1.5v.. + i have custom cooling on the volt regulators :D old heatsinks that i scavenged from an old dfi lanparty expert mobo.

My Xbox 360 with a falcon board, after giving the RROD and fixing it by the clamp mod.I decided to do this because I can give it better cooling, because if it fail again I don't need to open de case and because it's cool:rofl:

WOW, Good job . A friend of mine was trying to come up with a way to cool his 360. This is perfect, I'm gonna forward this to him.

Well heres my ghetto mod. Reversed Dell Ducting with a 120mm fan to boot! haha. and also motherboard cooling slot :p:

My addition to the thread - A toolbox PC. 1.1Ghz CPU, 384mb ram, 12Gb HDD, TV-out card. It has a wireless keyboard and mouse if required but it's main interface is a trackball I bought on eBay from an old Air traffic control tower.

Its used as a karaoke machine as a I didn't own a laptop at the time and it seemed a good use of some bits and pieces I had lying around.

The airflow in my case is reversed so the intake is in the back and the exhaust is in the front.
This cardboard duct is taped to the 120 mm intake fan and directs the airflow to the stock i7 920 cooler reducing my temps by around ~7 degrees Celsius.

Running at a comfortable ~70 Celsius 100% load on all cores and ~35 idle with the case cover closed and the ambient room temperature is ~75 F. Running it at 3.33 Ghz Prime stable 12+ hours. By the way the case is a LIAN LI PC-A05B, very good case IMHO.

Dang. Whys the card at an angle like that?

cos the sli link cable is on the bottom and its pretty easy to open up the dual pcb's and fit 2 blocks on the card ;)

it shows more clearly on this pic ( same one that i posted but with out the flash)
