View Full Version : Poor temps with bowed Apogee GT?

Just set up my new WC gear. Apogee GT, 2x120mm radiator, and a Swiftech 655 pump. I was hoping for a good jump over my TRUE.
However, my temps are around the same. The cores stay within 1-2C of each other until the CPU pushes pass 65C. So my temps are more consistent which should mean better contact/mounting. The CPU is lapped and I'm certain the block is mounted with more than enough force.
After about 30 mins my temps reach 72C at 3600mhz with 1.416v. With 1.488v it reaches 79C!!! This is with the radiator fans at 12v.
Ambient temp is 22C.
This seems pretty disappointing.
Here is a pic of my setup:

Are your fans push or pull?

Sounds like not enough TIM to me.

Something is not right there... I have an apogee gt on my Q6600 G0 and I run 3.6ghz at 1.45v and my load is just over 55* on the hottest core. It could be anything, maybe a bad pump (got a flow rate meter?), fans blowing hot air (but even that shouldn't get that hot), or a bad mount. What thermal paste do you use? I'd suggest Arctic Silver 5, and I've heard something about some other one, can't remember the name off the top of my head.

From the looks of it, the rad fans are pushing air away from the case and through the rad, if this is true he's pushing a lot of hot air from a "certain" *cough*9800GX2*cough* GFX card right through the rad raising the temp a good bit.
Deus Excalibur,
what about water temperature? Just touch the rad or try to measure the water temp. If the water to ambient temp difference is more than 10C then the problem is in rad. If it's less then the problem is in waterblock or mounting.

This can't be right.
I have an apogee gt on a b3 x3210 oc to 3520.. The wattage/temps are massive and it idles at 39-43c loads in the high 50's.
Either you have a very bad mount, no tim, or there are airbubbles stuck in your radiator.
I have a feeling your radiator is whats causing this problem
Shake the case around a few times and get the suckers out of there

I'm using Zalman STG-1 as a thermal paste. I may use my AS5 then and apply the line method and report back.

I used the Zalman paste for a little while, but I noticed that it tended to dry too fast and clump up while on the core. This was giving me some pretty bad contact area.
Also, did did you bow the GT yourself? If you did, then you may have put the pins in the incorrect orientation.

I did bow it myself, I checked at least a dozen times to make sure the orientation was right.
However, I just finished remounting the block with the line method with AS5. After 5 mins my load temps are still around 50-52C!!! When I first took off the block there was no Zalman paste in the center, I spread it thin and it all got pushed to the sides.

Also, mounting the block so that the inlet and outlet are vertical might help with temps a bit, as the 2 cores are arranged that way in the CPU itself. Just like the AS5 quadcore installation instructions suggest. I mean, it may give you a 1 or 2 degree drop, it also may not...

That is the first orientation I tried. Unfortunately, the north bridge gets in the way of the mounting plate.

It's either air in the rad like Eddie said and/or that 9800GX2 blowing hot air straight into your rad! Those damn things are hot!!!!

Sounds like you got it sorted out.

I'm now looking to rearrange the fans on the radiator, at 7V they do not move enough air and the temps slowly rise. At 12V the temps are great but the fans are noisy. :(
Would the pull configuration better if I used quieter fans?

If your load temps are at 50-52c now, thats very good.

That's great, you could try just a leetle more bleeding of air in your system...

Optical illusion, the tube behind it makes it look like there is a bubble.
I got another question; when running P95 it seems some test can stress the CPU much more. I see jumps of nearly 10C and then it goes back down after a set of tests complete. Is there a more consistent stress test?

Not really, as ORTHOS is essentially Prime95... You could try a different set of tests on P95 other than SmalFFTs..., such as blend.

Unmount the rad (keep the hoses connected) and try aiming it in a diff direction so it grabs fresh air, if that doesn't change the temps then you can rule that out (will also let you shake the rad to verify its not any air stuck in there)

Load temps seem to be settling around 60C at 3500mhz with 1.4v with Small FTTs in Prime. Sound about right?

That's a little high, but by no means bad.

Hmm, I'm running out of ideas to improve temps. I used the line method to apply AS5, I've tightened the mounting screws as far as they could go, and I've shaken my radiator.(there were was no air in it) I also have placed 3 1200RPM fans on my radiator, 2 pull and 1 push. Ambient temp is around 25C.

I think your temps are fine with a 120.2 rad and a overclocked quad core, especially under the voltage you are pushing. What did you expect? Do not get caught up in temp envy you will see around here:D
Foe Prime95, use Blend for overall stability of your rig and small FFTs for maximum heat.
