When I open up steam and click on "Counter Strike" and then click on "Launch", CS does not start up. It looks like it is going to start but then it just sits there.
I then launched in while I had a task manager window open so I could see the processes running. And when I launch cs 1.6, I see the "hl.exe" process come up, but then it disappears.
Any help is appreciated, my specs are in my sig and note that I am using Windows Server 2003 x64, but I converted it to a "workstation" OS. I am going to try installing Direct X and see if that works, thanks for any help!

Just installed DirectX 9.0c and the problem still persists. I am not a "gamer" but I do play the occasional game, I hope I can get this working.

put that in the command path...
steam > games > right click counter-strike > properties > set launch options > paste that ^ in there > ok
see if that does anything..

Even when I put that in the launch options it still does the same thing. Any other ideas? Anyone? Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Oh the joys of steam. Get your cfg backed up and reinstall steam and 1.6

Exit Steam - > Go to your steam folder -> Then delete "ClientRegistry.blob (http://supportwiki.steampowered.com/wiki/ClientRegistry.blob)" -> Restart computer -> See if this works.
I've had this issue when I've been adding custom huds, scripts and other programs in any steam folder. Have you done anything similar?

most likely the problem is with the "workstation" server os, not really a steam issue.
