View Full Version : NF7-S (rev 2) maxes out at 220FSB

Is this normal? Did I get a lemon?

I've been looking around the forum, and I've seen some people doing 240FSB - I'm assuming those are vmodded boards (or PSU's), but many people claim to be doing 230 or so on stock. I'm watercooling my NB, so heat is most definately not an issue.

Is 220 max common? Or did I just get a lemon, and I'd be better off selling this one?

What CPU are you using? Its kinda important :)

I've got a 1700+ (JIUHB DLT3C) SPMW (Prometeia cooled).

Another thing, the NF7-S I had before this one could boot at over 2800mhz, this one won't even POST at 2700... :( That's why I'm worried about it being a lemon. :(

Also, do you think a 2500+ AXQEA would do better? IIRC, it seems to be the best stepping of Barton, and I've got one available to me if I want to buy it...

i got 223 FSB out of mine with water on the NB. i'd say that's the best you can do without mods

Alright, well at least that's a relief (was worried about getting a bad mobo :)).:toast:

How far do you think I could get with vmods? 230? How far do you think I could get with the AXQEA + vmods? 240? :D

You need to do the simplest mod that is, the L12 mod. More info on this here:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15300

Helped me from 217 to 236mhz FSB with my 1800+, i just dropped a straw from a wire that i used to vmod my gfx card into the socket. Far the easiest mod you can do, and what a gain :D

What pin holes do you put the wire in?

You can read here:

http://www.beachlink.com/candjac/fsbsense.htm

I have pics of it on my own comp(on my moms Dell LOL), but i cant remember where i found them. just dig around in the thread i linked to before. This is a trick that works on the NF7 only, iirc.

Using bios d10 with a 266 chip the L12 is a must do. Also d10 gives me back multipliers 10 &10.5 when running over 210fsb CPU Interface enabled. Anyother bios my PC will not boot up using either multipliers but could use 9.5 and under.

Excuse my noobness but whats iirc? I'm ordering an NF7-S tonight/tommorow anyway so :D

EDIT:that link made no scence. I thought I droped a wire in 2 pin holes so it connected 2 pins on the proc.

Sweet! Thanks for the info, this is just what I was looking for! :toast: :toast:

One question - do I actually connect the pins (on the bottom of the CPU), or is it enough to put some ASIII on the bridge on the top of the CPU? (as illustrated in the following picture)

this is not artic silver 3 on the pic, you can make it with some special conductive paint like i did but the wire is much easyer ;)

But then, should I slip the wire into the socket, or do I connect the bridge on top with wire?

Putting it in the socket seems kind of risky to me - if the wire breaks, you've got an f*cked mobo (or rather, a screwed socket).

How would a wire screw the socket up?

Because there would be a piece of wire stuck in the socket...? I dunno, just seems kind of bad to me. :) (especially for RMA purposes ;)).

Anyway, I'm going to try to find something like conductive (and easily removable) paint... I don't like permanently altering my stuff. :)

whats best to connect it with, its so f*cking small. I'm a newbie in modding (first one).

Ok, just did the L12 with a (tiny) piece of aluminum foil... Strapped it on with some scotch tape, looks ready to go! :toast: Pray for me. :D

1. yes you can use as3, you can use anything that conducts electricity.
2. no you cant mod it like that, with the newer xps you need to close the laser cuts first and then apply the as3 or silver paint.
3. id do the pin mod if i were you, its easier and can be removed if you need to rma the chip.
4. i had 2 nf7-s 2.0 boards so far and the highest i could get with both was 10x215 dc without any mods :/

I was able to pull 227 with both of my nf7-s 2.0 boards. Stock cooling and no vdd mods. Granted I was only running one stick of ram, so if you are running DCDDR, 220 is good. From what I know, DCDDR is more of a strain on the chipset, so it requires more juice to get it up there.

Can someone give me a pic of what pin holes I'd put the wire in to connect the pins?

Its not like you cant remove the tiny wire :)

You just take it out again, its not permanent at all. using a conductive material to connect the bridges are more permanent.

Drop ze wire where ze red line iz(in German accent) :)

I never had problems with wire-drop-socket method. I've been doing it for long time and in various types of boards.

wires don't get broken that easily. However there was a time when I did drop a tiny piece of wire in the hole so I sucked it up by using a vaccum machine.

If the wire does get broken and gets dropped in one of the holes on the socket, take your board upside down and shake! :D ... or shake some more till it drops :D, or get a vaccum machine and suck it up, game over.

If for some reason you want to remove the wire from the socket holes, get a sharp blade(exacto knife) to pull it up. very easy..

and what did you mean by "whatever" and "OverclockersNZ" in the socket pic you posted there?

Its not my pic. Its from OvarClokcarsNZ or something ;)

Ok, got a really thin wire (from an old floppy cable - WOW these wires are thin).

Just so I'm clear on this... Do I just put a straight piece of wire between these pins, or do I make a "U" and stick the legs into the socket?

What happens if I put it in the wrong holes?

It can take out your CPU or mobo or both.

Thats VERY, VERY comforting...

JESUS CHRIST!

I just did this L12 trick, and am now running prime95 for 30 mins with no errors... AT 200x11@1.49v (NF7-S reading)!! Eat THAT, Bartons that do 3200+ speeds on a whopping 1.65v! :)

Ok I'ma try it and if the board gets toasted I just clean the dielectric greese and RMA it saying it was DOA ;)
