View Full Version : Is it Possible to Only Pick up Sounds Over Certain dB?

Is it possible, when using a desktop microphone, to have the microphone only transmit sound if it is over a certain dB level?
I want to be able to use voice chats, but I don't want to have it pick up all the subtle fan and background noise. Can I set something up, say in the Sound Blaster control panel or audio creation application so that low levels of dB's are ignored?
Thanks!

I'm no audiophile, but when I drove a semi for a few years I had a "noise cancelling" mic. it made a world of difference in the sound quality, it would be similar i assume as wind noise is what it looks to cancel out.
If you have any soft open cell foam try to cut a cube out of it and make a hole in it then slip the hole over the mic. boom and see if that helps. free and easy.

You will need noise canceling to do that pretty much.

If you use ventrilo, u can set it up so that it only pics up after a certain volume of noise.

I tried to do that in Ventrilo, but can't seem to see where to do it.

In Ventrilo
1) Goto Setup
2) Uncheck "Use Push to Talk Hotkey"
3) In the Silence Time drop down box select "0.5-1.0"
4) The sensitivity is all based on your mic and room ambient volume.
The lower the sensitivity the louder you will have to speak to get it to work.
The higher the sensitivity is the opposite.
Use the built in test feature to test it around your room.

You should be able to lower the sensitivity in the Audio control panels. This should allow your microphone. to pick up your voice but not the background noises.

Is that in the Creative console, or in the Windows system panel?

You should do the MIC test in Both.

There are so many un-labled mic dials all over the place. I wish I knew which one was the sensativity one Robscix was refering to.
