-My first post, after months of lurking
I have a quick question that I brought here because I've found conflicting answers around the internet
I decided my stock 8800GT cooler was inadequate and I wanted something better. I plan to build a watercooling system in August, so I wanted a not-too-expensive air-cooling solution to last until then. Eventually I settled for a Zalman VF900 because of its decent price and relatively small size.
Unfortunately, I didn't research enough, and I thought that since the VF900 came with ramsinks, I'd be covered. But now that I have the cooler in my possession, I find that the 8 ramsinks it comes with are only enough to cool the memory, and not other parts of the card.
The problem is that, due to my college schedule, it would be a hard and lengthy process to have something shipped to me until May 9th or so. I know that, ideally, I should have more sinks.
My question is this: is it dangerous to run an 8800GT with sinks only on the memory? I would only be doing this for about 6 weeks and then I will order more sinks.
So, is it okay to run my VF900 with ramsinks only the the memory? or do I need to stick with the stock cooler for the next 6 weeks, until I am able to get more ramsinks?
Thanks, in advance! I really don't know what to do...

if your in the uk ..... i have a large bunch of small heatsinks salvaged from motherboards, video cards etc. some low low profile, others a bit larger. kept for such purposes, of course some will require hacksaw'in to size
if your not in the uk, maybe positioning a high CFM fan directly on the card? the heatsinks on my card only get warm at best

Custom "iandh" 8800GT/G92 Memory & VRM cooling kit
I used them on my 8800 gts 512, they are sweet!
they are "in stock" at petra and sidewinder...

yeah, I may order that, depending on what my budget turns out to be. the thing is, I won't be able to order anything for about a month, so is it okay to leave the VRMs naked until then? I do have a slot blower I could use to blow right on the card...
and I'm in the U.S., unfortunately. it's a long drive to the U.K. from here
EDIT: okay, that month might turn out to be just a week
So... I can get more ramsinks in about a week or ten days
In the meantime, is it okay to run my 8800GT with naked VRMs (the mem and of course GPU will be cooled)? I can position fans on the card like It_Burns said... any other opinions?
EDIT2: now I realize that waiting a week to install the VF900 isn't going to kill me... I'll just wait. It would probably be okay, but it isn't worth the risk when I can just wait a week for my new ramsinks to arrive. I just ordered some from Petra's... didn't get the Iandh ones because I'll only be using these ramsinks for a couple of months before I switch to watercooling and use a full-cover block (I don't want to use the MCW60 because I want a single-slot block) and I wanted something cheaper that will just get me through the next few months.
Thanks to everyone who gave me advice!

yeah you can run the card without ramsinks.. check out asus 8800gt glaciator for example. it just has a mosfet heatsink and a cooler for the gpu. no ramsinks. BUT i don't know how long they will last. i should have a disclaimer to try at your own risk.

I have the MSI 8800 GT 512 OC with the zalman 4 pipe cooler on it. It doesnt have any ram sinks at all. I suppose the draft from the fan helps the chips though. But I did buy a set of 8 ramsinks at microcenter the day i was there returning about $650 worth of hardware..hehe. Found the ram sinks in the dump bin for a few dollars. Said hell yea!! for that price I was gonna buy any and all they had but they only had one. Bummer.
I also picked up some AS thermal adhesive so I dont have to deal with the thermal tape that the ramsinks come with. I will have to remember to see how far I can OC without and then with ramsinks on it.
