sturgeon is part of the fqdn name of this box if you may wonder. had to pickup a new am2 retention bracket off ebay. goal of this is to be completely fanless everything passive. the psu, hdd, cpu, and video card will all be passive. cool n' quiet should handle the cpu.
no fans!! :)

All that 'passiveness' will go to waste if you don't pick up a different hard drive, Raptors put out enough noise that that's all you'll hear--not the idea sound for a computer :p
And not sure what the purpose of the computer will be, but there are video cards a lot more powerful than the 6200le that can still be run passive at safe temps (sparkle 8800GT is the most powerful, currently).

Raptors generate massive amount of noise and heat.... I'd suggest you going for some traditional 7200rpm hdds or even SSD if you want it to be silent.
Also you could use some more powerful GPU. You could search for a passive or use some aftermarket cooler like Thermalright Hr-03GT or Arctic Cooling Accelero S1

coding mostly, watch a dvd every now and then. I thought about buying a nicer card like the evga passive 8500 (this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130315)) but I don't need that kind of technology. the 6200 was hella cheep like $25.

hey so are solid state drives availabe yet? there's a pci solution you need to plug into the wall for power but i don't remember.

SSDs are available, but aren't cheap.

i got 2 x WD3200AAKS in raid and they are faster than the raptors (in raid) on most benchmarks, only marginly though, not that noticable on use
you can get one or 2 fans, my entire system is with silence in my mind. everything is lapped, mushed together with mx2 and the fastest fan i have is 1200rpm, 3 are 1000rpm and 1 is 800rpm. the only thing i hear is the hdd's. oh i have some of that foam sound proofing too for added suppression
just a thought for you to consider. alot of elbow grease and thought required tho, well worth it in my opinion

Well they're available but... a 3.5" 65gb hdd cost like 1200$ if i'm correct :P

Fullcopper heatsinks will most likely never be ideal for completely passive systems. I doubt that you'll get good temps with the ZEROTHERM. Even a Thermalrigt Ultra-90 or something like that should do better. You'll need to undervolt the CPU anyway to keep it cool.

Copper isn't that bad... Ninja Copper can maintain Q6600@3.4GHz in passive mode :P

Really absolutely passive? Not a single fan in the system? I highly doubt it. I'm speaking about a fully loaded CPU, not idle.

I don't think he means that passive, probably just with no fan on the cpu cooler itself but still with airflow from case fan + psu fan.
I agree with the others, get rid of the raptor, i've tortured my ears long enough with multiple raptors in raid, get a "regular" hdd instead, much more capacity for less money and less noise, something like a Samsung F1 750GB.

Well that Ninja copper was tested with 2 case fans (intake and exhaust).
Under normal circumstances it's impossible to have completely fanless system. Only possible way I can imagine is to have mobo without any case, just on the desk, for an example and ambient must be low...
Anyway, it's hard to imagine ;o

well the hdd is noisy now so a ssd would be nice if they ever come down in price. temps are ok. usually around 25C at idle. general use takes it around 35C-40C. moved the old psu to the server.

ssds are expensive. i'll prob. wait until they are cheeper and keep the raptor until then.

Copper works fine.

Copper works fine.
As long as it is really designed for passive mode. This heatsink isn't, that's why I said what I said. It can be done with a full copper heatsink, no doubt, but it has to be a different design. As long as the CPU isn't fully stressed for a longer period, though, it won't matter much.

that's pretty much what I'm seeing here. if you were going to do any continuous load temps would go above 60C (tested a bit with some jpeg batch resizing).
maybe I'll get a fanbus that can turn off a fan completely and put a single 120 somewhere in the case blowing on the hsf. right now if I wanted to do batch image work or video conversion it wouldn't be possible without a fan.
other than that cool n quiet works well to keep the temps moderate.
maybe I'll upgrade to a thermalright hs and then connect the fan to the fanbus or a dpst switch or something.

added 2 92x32mm fans. now it idles at 15C and loads at 35C. those temps are with both fans running. the switches are spst one for each fan. fans are loud but if I ever need to encode some video turn them on else off. will likely sell the raptor soon and buy a ST380815AS. have a ST3250410AS in the server and am happy with the seagate .10 series.
