Hey folks, ok, here's the setup...

Case: Lian-Li PC-V600B (http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=159&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=63)

MB: ASUS A8N-SLI
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 with Stock HSF
Video: XFX GeForce 8600GT 256MB

basically, i think the main culprit that's making all the noise is
1) CPU Stock HSF
2) XFX GeForce Stock HSF
3) 2x 120mm Stock Case Fans

but the stock case fans are not too bad... in comparison to the cpu and vga HSF...

i'm looking for alternative and quite HSF combos...

CPU:
it has to be low profile because the case, tho cute as a button, the PSU sits right on top of the CPU area and basically the HDD fan in front of case supplies the CPU air as well as the PSU air...

i dont see that many socket 939 coolers out there but is there a low profile cooler that'd be an improvement over noise of the stock HSF?

this machine is not OC'd but the wife keeps the room on the warmer side...

as for VGA, any suggestions here?
how's this?
Zalman VF1000 (http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=196&products_id=22981)

again, the only airflow through the case is the HDD fan in front and the fan blowing air on top of the VGA card...

thanks in advance...

^ that's not tiny, but it'll perform great (and it's cheap) the heatsink itself is 115mm high.

If you need one that's really low profile, the zalman 92mm ones are great... they're about as small as I've dared to go. Used one with an opty a while back, did pretty well for its size/volume.

thanks for the reply Fujimitsu, but i've read a review over at egg about the case and a dude basically was able to fit the Zalman 8700 with only bout 20cm to spare...

Zalman stands at 67mm +20mm ist bout 87mm

Scythe stands at 115mm according to egg spec sheets...

i get a feeling my choices are limited...

any suggestions on VGA HSF?

Casing Fans would be Scythe S-Flex F series.

CPU
Thermalright XP-120 without a fan its H63mm with a 25mm thick fan its H63 + 25mm - 2mm since the fan sits a little in the heatsink 86mm perhaps. you can use it passive anyway and make the psu fan do the work.

VGA HSF (even Passive it can be good enough)
Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2

What I did for my moms computer (She's not too computer savy, so my old computer was more than enough) was I just took the stock heatsink, removed the noisy ass 40mm fans, removed the flashy cover/duct, and strapped a quiet 120mm fan right ontop. If this will fit, that could be a very nice and also cheap solution. It moves much more air, and cuts down the noise :). I'm sure you can find some pictures on the forum, because I've seen a few other people do this too.

How about all fans @5v? Should be quiet and pretty easy to do :)

What is the max height the case can handle for a heatsink.

Scythe "SHURIKEN" is a good low profile sink

Cheap too.

For the VGA, find a used VF700 or 900 model. The 8600GT does not need that much cooling.:D

For low profile CPU HS, I recommend ZALMAN CNPS8700. It's all copper and great performance while it's VERY quiet. Used it for a while before I move to MM-UFO and was very happy with the performance/noise.

Edit: I apologize. The one I had was ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU which is very similar but 7700 is even cheaper.

That heatsink is garbage, worse then stock. Those X2 939's were 89watt chips, so they produce a good amount of heat.

whoops... oh dear i'll stick with my first suggestion then.

i think for CPU Zalman is going to be it...

the VGA, i guess i can pick out a fanless? since there is a 120mm right on top of it...

thanks for input...

I'd go with Scythe Zipang or even lower&cheaper Scythe Shuriken on CPU, Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 rev.2 with some quiet, low rpm 120mm fan like Silverstone FN121 on 5V - you can use these fans as intake and exhaust as they're really quiet. I'd also buy some quiet PSU like Corsair HXEU 520w.

I use the setup mentioned above and belive me - it's almost silent :)

hmm... that Scythe Shuriken sounds interesting...
but the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 may not work because the case has a fan housing on top of the GPU area and it may get in the way...

You can always remove or move that fan.... if not... you could try Thermalright Hr-03 GT... It costs 3 times more but it may work

probably a bit long winded for what you want but i considered that case with the inention of re-locating the PSU to the 5.25 bay and modify the plate where the PSU should be with a 120mm fan so i could use the TRUE

the only thing that put me off was the price of it over here in the uk at the time :( ..... so now my case project is converting a dell xps case to a standard atx format .... yay dell and their proprietry methods!

I'd say the Gemini II for the CPU fanless and fan brackets removed (this is short), and let the PSU fan cool the CPU. For the GPU, a thermalright HR-03 fanless should be more than enough. Intake and Side fan both S-Flex and you are good to go.
