Ok, heres my question I just recieved this compressor for free. My dad does a little work around some refrigeration businesses and he saw this unit they had lying around so he bought it for 50 bucks. Heres the compressor http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/searchresults.jsp

I think it may be overkill, lol. But no matter what it is an awesome deal. I will ebay if its overkill though. Just looking for your guys opinions. Thanks

haha wow! thats the same size compressor that cools my house, its about $300 a month in electricity just to power it too.

computers need no more than 1hp MAX, right now im using 1/2hp with plenty of cooling to spare.

Same size as my A/C too. Only mine is 30+ years old... and costs less than $100/mo to run... LOL

thats impressive gary. i live in texas so mine is almost always on, that might justify the huge electric bills. my friends bill was $350 last month. vintage compressor haha nice, you should give it a paint job and show it like people do with cars, flames on top etc. haha

No doubt its hotter in Texas... and humid too. Lots of mold problems down your way. And then your power costs may be higher, too. It's difficult to make comparisons. On the other hand, your A/C probably has a much higher energy efficiency rating than mine. 10 SEER is the mandatory minimum now. Mine is about 6 SEER. Or I should say... was 6 SEER. I did a few little mods and tuned it.

Actually, I have to confess that I have no idea how much it costs to run my A/C. But my total electric bills are less than $100, with the house kept at 72F. :D

Hmmmmm... flames on top... hmmmmmm...

BTW, if your A/C runs all the time on a very hot day, or maybe even loses a degree or two, then it is sized just right for your house. Any bigger would cost more to run and could be less effective at controlling humidity. Any smaller wouldn't do the job.

i noticed it was making an odd sound the other day when i was walking to my car, the compressor was much louder than normal, turns out 1/2 the condesner was completely clogged with cottonwood crap so i put a hose to it and she runs nicely now. i probly saved my parents a thousand dollars or so for a new unit after it wore out, but i wont see a cent in thanks :D...well i guess they dont owe me anything becasue they are my parents, but still! nice electric bill by the way

Think of those cottonwood thingies as dollar bills. Any restriction in airflow adds directly to the electric bill. Did you change the filter, too?
