View Full Version : Dedicated Server (Source and CoD4) system requirements?

Just out of curiosity, what sort of system requirements would I be looking at to get either a Source (CSS, TF2, HL2:DM, etc) or CoD4 Dedicated Server running smoothly for 16-24 player LAN games? Is there any need for any sort of graphics power, or is it all CPU based? If it's all CPU based, what sort of power would I be looking at? Would something like an E4500 or E6300 (probably at around 3.0Ghz or so) + 2Gb RAM be able to handle it?

Chances are the rig will be running a Linux 64-bit OS (most likely Ubuntu), since when it's not being a ded server it'll be crunching for WCG.

You don't need much for Video? Fast drive would be nice, and duel processor would be fine for that.

I am running COD4 dedicated on an old P4 2.26 with 512MB DDR266 and onboard (I845 I believe) video. COD4 utilizes ~30% of the CPU when 18 people are playing. Network speed is way more important here, since my 1Mb up has problems keeping up with 14+ people. If you're local, that's no issue of course.

As for the disk speed, a fast disk is nice, but after a map has been loaded once, it'll load much faster until the system is rebooted. The 80GB IDE disk I have in my server loads a map in under 5 seconds.

It really doesn't take much. Whenever I have a LAN CoD4 game going I usually just host it in the background on my gaming comp - 3.2 ghz c2d with 2 gigs of ram and there really aren't any slowdowns. Loading's a little bit faster for me too :P

I've also run it on an old celeron 3ghz with 1 gig of ram and it doesn't use much of it at all.
