View Full Version : Team Milestone Thread

This replaces the "Easynews goes down" thread. We proved last October we can beat Easynews. Now it's time to focus our energies on other goals such as boosting daily production above five million. We are almost there. We are also on course to surpass two billion points later this year. Keep up the good work.

So where have we been and where are we now.
A year ago - 1,543,883
Today - 4,975,259
As you can see we have made a lot of progress, thanks to all of you who have contributed to the cause. We will surpass 1.5 billion points in about two weeks. Only two other teams (Easynews and Team 2ch) have reached that milestone and both have a lot more members than we do.

If I get the money for this new quad I've been wanting to put together I'm sure it'll boost my daily production, but until then.. ya got what cha gots! xD

Every little bit helps.:) In order for the team to be successful we need both big and small contributions. No one is going to match Victor's production. But Victor can't carry the team by himself. And he doesn't. Earlier tonight, I went down the list of all the team members who've contributed a million points or more. The list is longer than you think.
It's always hard in the beginning. The first few weeks I crunched for the team, I was averaging less than 5,000 points/day. Then I added a second machine, then a third. And then I got my first million. Seemed like it took forever. Now I'm past 25 million. I'm not saying this to brag. What I learned is that you just have to keep at it.
I know for a fact that some large corporations are amazed that our relatively small group of crunchers can put out the production numbers that we do on a daily basis. If you look at the teams we've passed, they include big companies and universities.
And it's not just about the points. A lot of people got into this because they know someone who was stricken with or even died from a serious illness. There are many reasons to crunch. But one thing I do know. This is the best team on the planet.
patience and dedication is the key... :D

Maybe when we can put them down and keep em down, instead of trailing a few hundredK each day. I've done what I can.. got 2 quads ramping up this week... one of my own.. and one for a friend, whom I convinced to go quad instead of a 2g c2d dell.. Got him a MUCH better system, and only about 200 bucks more... (mostly from the extra shiny case and PS he picked out) He hadn't upgraded in 7 years... so I had some explaining to do. But, he's burning in at 3.4 right now.. and going to lap his true and cpu in the next few weeks. :D

I really am a fan off all of you guys! May our improvement from last year be an inspiration towards next record breaking. Everybody, who has contributed, deserves restecpa! So, congrats to y'all!!! :toast:
Btw, I am picking up a fresh Q6600 today and building a crunch machine. I hope I can soon call it all a farm (at least by the number of cores :D )

Congrat on the new addition to your stable!!! :woot: And yes, you can call it a farm.. You'll probably notice the strong desire to keep growing the farm too... Dr SiG runs a clinic for all of us crunchaholics.....It doesn't seem to stop us from acquiring new hardware, just not feel so guilty when we do...:ROTF:
As was said above, it's not the amount that individuals contribute that matters here. It is the dedication and persistence that this team shows that makes the difference. We all help each other achieve the best production our equipment can produce, at all levels.
Regards,
Bob
Here's the daily output since the beginning. It doesn't seem to have increased that much lately. But very nice compared to last year in March!
Sorry if the chart is the 'wrong' way, excel didn't want to sort the dates correctly when I tried it.

I hate to point this out, but we have been adding new members, but we've also lost some big producers. I don't really understand why, but hopefully we'll have some net gains soon. I'm looking at another quad myself. The qx9775's aren't worth the money - and I thought the qx9650 was overpriced when it came out. Damn, nearly $2k for a chip and over $4k for a dual cpu system.

Bob, how much space do you have left?
About a rack and 1/3. I'm trying not to fill the 1/3 with current stuff, but I don't seem to be winning that battle. I suspect when midline penryn comes out, that rack will magically fill up.
I refuse to buy the rack for the third rack space until nehalem....That will stopp me from filling it...:ROTF:

As stated EVERY ONE here is important from the one work unit per day member to our Hamster Master DDTUNG. He sets a very high bar and his dedication is Legendary.
So crank up those CPUs and lets work towards six million per day. It will be a steady increase in daily production if we all try to squeeze just a little more out of our hardware, bring on new systems when able, and show the world what XSDC is all about.

I have three identical quad rigs, same MB, VCs, CPU etc. that had Ubuntu 7.10 installed exactly the same with same machine names. That was the problem since they do not use mac address to identify machines.

This team is great, and has grown nicely. sierra_bound, DDTUNG and Movieman and a few others have done everything to convince people to crunch and giving support. Without them this team wouldn't be as strong as we are now.
Look at the number of results returned.

Can someone explain to me why we had less returning results while we produced the same amount of points?
because most workunits are longer now ?

Now this made my day!
Best way I know of to test out a rig, reach set goals via a PC and help out a great cause. I set a goal to break into the top 50 XS team ranking and did so the other night along with breaking the 4 million mark.
Now my goal is to average 50k a day or a million every 20 days. With the QX9650 and 2 Q6600's going full blast 24/7 I think I can do it. Wait, I'll need to get that E6850 back on line....
"Oh honey, remember that PC I was talking about building you, here it is" :D.
There, that should do it:D
For the life of me I can't put my finger on any one reason as to why I'm so drawn to the XS WCG team and building rigs to support the effort. Maybe it's being part of this team of great people here on XS. The genuine good people who want to help. Yes, now that I think about it, that may be it. Well, that and buildings things out of shinny new components. And there's the whole improving performance by mechanical means via WC'ing.
Ah hell, who knows, I just love doing it and helping folks out. Pretty much the total package AFAIC regarding hobbies.
Thanks again to all the folks who help administer, take care of our efforts and promote WCG here on XS. I gift that keeps on giving. At least his has to me, and I thank you for it.

Well I got another Phenom - bare bones - ddr2-800, and old hdd, decent case/psu. Also got a Chimei 22" monitor - I'll let you know how it is but the reviews on the egg are stellar. The gf is getting her own apartment so she can get away from the psycho C U Next Tuesday she's living with now. So I'm giving her the other Phenom and the new monitor. I should be able to oc it by about 10% using the Asus oc AI on the M3A. Yeah, I know, I should have gotten the q6600, but only one of them is currently oc'd and even that one is only at 3150. The other one won't do anything over stock and I can't figure out why. So I figured I'd save the $60 bucks and go with the Phenom.
Also, just broke into the top 500 overall on WCG. I've been waiting for that for a long time. But I'm still stuck at 41 in XS - d@mn St3vil_68. I have to wait for him to run over people before I can advance. I feel like the second dog in a sled team - the view never changes.

In the meantime - chin up bro'. The secret to getting more machines is to drop hints to everybody you know. Think about it - sure you enjoy helping people with their machines, but if they're REALLY grateful, there nothing wrong with them sharing the love. A public wish list on the egg should do it.

I'm getting to the point were I'm afraid to touch anything. This is the same machine that would only run at stock until after a couple of days I did an ice cold boot, reset it to defaults and then made some modest changes. But I did the same thing on the other quad, and it's stock or nothing. That's one of the reasons I decided to spring for new Phenom - to make up for all the oc'ing I now can't do.
But I'll try to summon the courage after I get the new machine up, but I don't know what else I can do. I don't think it's the memory since I've set the multi so that it is way below it's rating of 1066. If at some point you have a couple hours to kill and want to walk me through it, I would appreciate it. But I won't be able to do it until next week between the gf moving and the new machine. And if people want to flame me for inviting Dave to call, give me your best shot.

w00t! thanks!
yeah, i just got home from having a St. Paddy's meal at a couple's house whom i am very close with. Yum! When I got home i was expecting to have a good day, and was looking around the 200,000 mark. couldn't find myself. finally, i looked under my name instead of the scores and saw it.
I had a machine that hadn't connected in close to 5 days. so once i started to look at individual machines, i found it. was like 130 WUs ready to go on it.
on the downer side, i also have a 3.06 DX, @ 3.27 that looks like it is down and out for some reason, to be determined... :( ( as well as an e6400 rig that has been out for months, now... :( )
swinging back to the upside. my best friend's ( and his wife's ) house is where i had my corned beef, cabbage, etc ( including Irish soda bread ).
while there, tonight, i saw the rig that my friend has finally accepted, as a loaner ( indefinite ) by me. it is a q6600 in an antec 900. it runs at 3600. only problem is, it is not running and hasn' been for at least four or five days, since he brought it home. my buddy has been dragging his feet getting his burner and storage hdd out of his current rig and into the quad rig. itisn't even plugged in!
i saw that and said "what up wid dat?!?"
so tomorrow i'm going back over there, and we are going to get his stuff in there and get it running.
and like Victor said some other stuff is coming up. :)
oh yeah, i also, just the other day, parked an opty 165 rig at a buddy's house whose old computer died. so that should start checking in shortly. i hope; with him you never know. he always seems to be "having computer problems". you know the type... hopefully he won't mess it up too bad and it will start to and continue to do some work and produce points.

I'm still waiting for my 680i to get back from RMA so I can get my first real 24/7 rig up and running (a single 1.7Ghz P4 doesn't quite count :p:), and that'll only be a cheap Core2Duo. Running my gaming rig (what's in my sig) 24/7 isn't an option, since it's a shade on the loud side, very much on the bright side, and a shade on the space heater side, too (And it's summer over here in Australia :p:).

I'll tell you something that you might not agree with but it's true.
It is all of us that makes this possible. There's guys here running old P3's and socket A's.
Everyone brings what they can and it is just that "coming together" as a team that makes this all work.
I don't care if you do 500 points a day or 50,000, it's what you can do and that is what matters.
Take all the quads and high end PC's off of this team and there would still be over 2 mil a day I think..
Think on that a bit.. You count as much as anyone IMO.

Karl ,
I don't get it - your watercooled system is too loud for 24/7 operation??
Make it more silent then! Clock it down a little , if that's what's needed for 24/7 action.

I got my second Phenom running a couple days ago but this is the first day it's made a serious contribution. So I can't take you up on the offer for at least a couple more months. But I do intend to replace a mobo on a Q6600 that is only running at stock presently, so that might work out to be 1/3 of a quad - assuming I can get it up to 3.2ghz reliably. I seem to run into longer term problems when I try to push much beyond that.

This is why we are XTREME!!
We all see that we are painfully close to taking out EN in the daily scores. I itch and burn when I see us miss by one or two quads..... (.....or maybe it's just crabs.... )
Now, with what is committed above, I add this. As soon as Q9450s become available to me, I will put up two of them. (and no, this has nothing to do with my Nehalem plans....I want to play with some yorkie hardware to asses it's efficiency.)
So, you guys keep your commitments (If I know DDT, it's probably in house now...anyway. ), I'll keep mine, and we should easily be beating EN by at least 100k+ a day. That's a start. When Nehalem comes out, I expect us to go to another level, but that's some time away. For those with limited funding (or a wifey to take care of:p: ) perhaps you want to wait. The signals look good for the Intel "tock" to have taken place with them.....
As always,

The best way is just to get them, then say 'oops I didn't know you didn't want them in the house'.
Or, if you have too much money to spend, let her do her thing in the shopping mall as well... That's a last-ditch effort though

If the q9450's are going to take forever, look into the Xeon X3350, same exact cpu as the q9450, but you can but it now.

Are they actually higher binned, or not? Because I know some people who would swear by the Xeon chips being higher binned (and thus OC better), while others swear that they're binned exactly the same as their desktop counterparts.

From what I understand, it's not really "higher" binned, but more "differently" binned. The parameters that are checked are weighted a bit differently and I believe a few of the on die fuses are set slightly differently to change a bit of the pre-fetching behavior and other assorted priorities for how it functions in certain situations.
It's still pretty much a toss up as to which clocks better with the limited data set we have most of the time.
Edit: ooooooo! and way to go team on whomping easy news again!
Nice job guys, how many days does that make now?
On an OT note, Blauhung, regarding the Bloomfield board board that appeared today. How many channels would be used if only two sticks were installed into 2 same color slots? How about all 4 slots? I hope you can answer but totally understand if you can't.

Bob,
I have not, but there is a thread were others have ordered and items shipped within a day. Can't remember if it was here or at [H].
I'm still debating on ordering one. Trying to decide if I want to hold out on Skulltrail or get a server 5400 board for the 5420's I plan on ordering here shortly.
I doubt the $150 price difference (between selling a used q6600 and new x3350) is going to give me/us that many more points over a q6600.
EDIT: Awesome day guys!

First off, only guessing....
but I see no reason why only putting 2 sticks in wouldn't have it run just fine in dual channel mode, but then your just wasting all that yummy possible bandwidth.
Fill all 4 and then you have channel 0 with one stick that won't be interleaved with anything all by it's lonesome. This will be a similar situation to using a normal board today with 3 slots populated. As I haven't ever played with this, I don't know how the performance goes, but I expect that this would only hurt you on read or writes done on addresses that are physically located in that un-interleaved space.

Wes, Thx. I'm ultimately adding these as new machines. I'm not about to shed any Q6600s yet....:D
I intend to get one just to test out what board to use it on. I've got an IP35 pro cranked up to 460 FSB (6x multi on it's Q6600) as a test to make sure I can handle the 8x multi the X3350 has. I think it will be the first test bed. The part will end up in a new machine.

Most of us here crunch mainly for the science. And I think you'll agree that a lot of us are very serious about that. You can see it on various threads we've had here. We have folks with optimized gear of all kinds. We try to squeeze out as much as we can. Heck, I'd even crunch with my washing machine if I could get it to run BOINC... Points only equals greater production for the science. Most of us use points as a fun thing on the team. Something to pass the time while staring at BOINC screens....
