So since the specs on the 9800gtx indicate its just a higher clocked GTS, I've decided to grab a couple GTS's and save some money...

I've heard that some GTSs have better memory than others (samsung?)

how do I know which card has the better memory???
help me make an intelligent purchace :)

The only way to tell is to Take off the cooler and look or Overclock it with out artifacts at 2300mhz...

Qimonda will usually start to show artifacts at 2300mhz with a StockCooler and fan @100% using rivaTuner.. The Samsung will usually be stable...Out of Six cards ,, Two had Samsung and those i modded for a friend...The others didnt cut the musturd sorta speak unless the memory was kept @ 2100-2200mhz while the GPU was over 900mhz..and shader over 2160mhz..

The best bet is to get Freshly stocked cards from Bfg and or EVGA ,,....Usually the Higher Reference clocked cards will mostlikely have the Samsung...its kinda luck of the draw....At least with Evga you can remove the cooler to check with out Voiding your warranty...It will Viod Bfg's though removing the cooler...:yepp:

I usually get EVGA because i watercool and OverClock all my cards....EVGA's are warranteed when the cooler is changed by enthusiast like you or me:D

P.S. the one in my sig Has QIMONDA...I keep it at 2250mhz! Ive seen average of 2300-2350mhz with Samsung...Just remeber the higher you clock the memory the less you can clock the shader usually because of heat..

I had to get something to play with over the weekend while the wife is away!

I grabbed a BFG 8800gts 512 OC from Newegg last night along with a Thermalright HR-03 and a 92mm fan from SVC. Hopefully it's got the samsung ics and can break 2300. I'll surely be able to report back about ram type after I take off the stock cooler this weekend.

The BFG I got has Samsung memory. It was hot a all hell before I put a HR-03 GT on it. Got it to clock stable at 808c/1107m/1920s so far.

Also ran some 3dmark05 = 26039

Not bad single card on air for $220 lol! Now hopefully I find best driver.

1) For amatuers, or for the ones who need warranty, the second way is a lot better ... :D

2) You know what I also like about EVGA, besides the thing with the cooler ? Stepup ... A guy from a greek forum, gives his EVGA 8800GTS 512MB back (290 euros) and gets a 9800GTX from EVGA of course :D ... Isn't it just lovely ? :p:

how about the MSI oc card? Its cheap as hell, so if the rv770 doesn't impress me or is too expensive, I'll be getting one, anything think that'll have samsung chips or does msi seem like too cheap a company to put them?
