Have never played with a server class OS, so I am going to be stumbling my way through it, but that is half the fun of learning it!

So far, it feels faster, but I am not giving that much merit, working on installing Boinc now.

I am only running the 32bit version but I like it better than Advanced Server 2000. I hear that the points are better with the x64 version, congrats.

well my understanding @ least is between the 32bit and 64bit for crunching, 64bit gives more points per WU.

Depending on how your results turn out phelan, I might switch from XP x64, if it is that much faster.

If you want to convert Server 2003 into a workstation OS (i.e. more desktop friendly), instructions can be found here (http://win2k3.msfn.org/). Among other things, DirectX is NOT enabled by default. Same for hardware acceleration on your graphics card.

It's not. I ran this for a while and then went to XP64, no real difference in production, but there is a definite improvement going from 32bit to 64 bit.

Ah, that explains why I couldn't play games on my Server2k3 rig. Thanks a lot

For security reasons during installation, a number of services are disabled by default on Server 2003. You just have to know what needs to be enabled.:)

The one thing I don't like about XP x64 is that it tends to be a virtual memory hog. In order to prevent crashes while running BOINC I had to increase the swap file size, something I've never had to do with Server 2003.

For security reasons servers should not run winders :p:

As long as humans are involved, there will always be security problems, regardless of the operating system used. Last year the British government lost the records of 25 million citizens, and it wasn't because of criminal activity. The government lost two computer discs containing the bank account and other personal information for every parent in the UK with a child under 16. The disks were sent to another office by mail. And no one knew the disks were missing for a month.

I used to use it and preferred it to XP. I would go back to it if I got fed up of Vista.

Agreed. Linux is WAY more secure, and is what I use on my server. My lappy uses XP because of program compatibility, however.

My 24/7 crunching box runs Server 2k3.

Hangs occasionally but I think thats more hardware based than o/s. Poor little Opty 165 is taking a beating!

What version of BOINC do you use?
