I want to maintain a quiet system while pursuing my overclocking and don't want the expense of water right now. I was wondering what everyone thought of this solution: Scythe Zipang SCZP-1000 (http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2248)

It has a 6 degree temp disadvantage to the TRUE but an 11.5db sound advantage. I could always go with a higher CFM fan and just add a pot to adjust speed for benching and 24/7 differences. Anyone think that the higher CFM fan would make up the difference?

I couldn't find any reviews with the TRUE and a low rpm fan for temp comparisons. If anyone know of any can you direct me so I can do more thorough research or if anyone here has the TRUE and a low rpm fan that can test the temp differences I would appreciate it. Oh, and I'm talking like 1000rpm.

Sound levels for the TRUE are somewhat meaningless as it is sold without a fan. That would all depend on what fan you choose to use with the TRUE. What if you used the same fan that was used for the Scythe Zipang in that review? Would it be 11.5db louder then:rolleyes:

You should use the TRUE, and pair it with a quiet fan. Yate Loon from Petras, Nexus, Scythe S-Flex .. the list really goes on and on. See Vapor's thread.

Yea, the TRUE, no matter what fan is the best engineered HS. It pulls heat from the CPU best. Many run decent fans and undervolt them for general use and crank it when playing etc.

Can't beat the TRUE for your best long term quiet cooling. It's how good the heat is xferred to the fins, and then it's up to the fans. Thermalright got it right, the fans are up to you. 6C is a lot! And pay little attention to ANY DB rating. Was it done from xx feet/meters? In a sound lab etc? Or some hack wiggling a DB meter right before a overdue lunch?

It sounds good, but in a TRUE vs this test head to head? Show me that then I'll be a believer about DB vs good 'ol cooling.

If it must be TRUE, I'd suggest using it with 2 quiet fans (if you can afford 2x noctua p12 would be the best if kept at 800 rpm)

There still another option if you'd like ultimate silence.... :

Scythe Ninja 5th Anniversary Edition (the copper one). It's fully made of copper and weights more than a kilo without fan.... but it can maintain Q6600 at 3.8 GHz in passive mode and it costs same as the TRUE (+ you'll be given a fan with it). With low rpm fans it also performes better due to wider fin spacing :)

Hope I could help

EDIT: I'm also a silence enthusiast and i've just ordered the Scythe Zipang :D

i'm a sound fanatic too

i've lapped every heatsink in my case, even the CPU and GPU to maximise heat transference. using MX2 aswell

got 3x 12cm 1000rpm nexus fans (1 on cpu, 1 exhaust and 1 intake), a 12cm 800rpm fan in the PSU and 1x 12cm Antec 1100rpm fan on the 8800. very quiet and the loudest thing besides the dvd drive spinning up is the hard discs.

be prepared to put some work and thought into the matter and you should come out with a pretty quiet unit. oh i've also got sound dampening foam through-out the case - but in my opinion it only quietens the hard disc noise for my case

Well that was what I was wondering since Frostytech is pretty reliable in doing all of thier HSF tests in the same conditions as best as possible. So would using the TRUE with the same fan be 6C better? I doubt it but would it still be 4C better? That is still a pretty good amount of differentiation for me to go with the TRUE.

For the other fellas. Thanks for the advice on the HSF. Looks like I'll be going
to get the TRUE.

i would like to point out, as many will agree, that my TRUE and even my HR03+ were concave - probably why the lapping gained so much on temperature drop

Was looking at water solutions and my wallet at the same time when I stumbled across this in a research timeout: Xbitlabs Review (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/scythe-zipang-xigmatek-hdtd1284_12.html)

Seems like the Zipang might be a good idea after all for me. I have my system in a Case so in this case (no pun intended) the Zipang is the winner. I wonder if that 140mm fan on the Zipang is running 7v's. If so I could mod it for connection to a pot ranging from 7v's to 12v's and pump it up to hopefully 1500rpm or more for bench days:D
