To further, does anyone have problems sometimes on reboot still getting the "DET DRAM" POST error, or sometimes after the post reset double boot, the board will reboot 1 more time and you hear like a cap discharging then you gotta dump value ram into a DIMM?
I had this exact issue ALOT when I was finding my OC, What I found for me to be the answer was to use the 400 strap and clock my memory on that strap. Worked 100% for me, and now run my ram @ DDR1130 @ 5.5.5.8 FSB @ 424 with my G0 6600

Just set CPU PLL to 1.5-1.6v, also set CPU GLT Ref - .63x and NB ref .67x and try it then.
I'll try that. I did have the cpu pll set to 1.5ish and I saw somewhere that auto might stabalize it but I never messed with the GLT settings.
Is there somewhere where I can get a definition of what all these voltage settings are? I'm sure the engineers in the house know this stuff, but I'm guessing this board needs most if not all of it's voltage settings hard set in order to be stable at high OCs and I really don't know what these settings do.

On my P35 my Quad runs 4 GHZ and on my X38, as soon as the load starts, boom bluescreen, its not as stable as the P35, my finding..

Just playing with the board. Primed at 450x8 without much effort.

Can't for the life of me get it to bench at 4GHz (445x9), instant restarts as soon as the load starts, regardless of any voltages set. Tried 401, 602 & 903. Its not the cpu, put the same one back in my IP35 Pro and it'll bench all day at 4GHz 1.6v. I have a feeling its something to do with GTL settings. Setting 70% on my Abit made it stable, cant set past 67% on the maximus. Any ideas? Tried all the user configs, didnt help.

If you don't see it it might have been removed, is that an issue ? Will flash next week or so to 907 if I get more end user reviews...

No, I saw it after flashing to 0907, I`m sure.
Option can be enabled or disabled in "Boot Configuration" and the setting would be called "Silent Boot" directly translated from german.

At least I'm not the only one. On my P35 I get instant restarts if I set GTL to 0.63 or less like the best the Formula can do. On the P35 if I set GTL to 0.70 it'll prime just fine at 1.63v.

Has anyone had a major problem getting this to post, I have a cmos error every boot and the only way it will go further is if I hit F2 to load defaults,(with a preloaded drive it will boot to OS and run fine.) if I hit F1 and load setups defaults and save, exit or make any other changes it still has a cmos error. the lcd post screen always says EN SETUP. I have tried moving the ram around, using only one stick, raising voltage to 2.0 and 2.1 and nothing, I need some help or a kick in the right direction been playing with this thing for a few days.

My first post :-)
Just got an Asus Maximus Board and an Intel Core Duo Extreme QX9770 (3.2GHz at 1600FSB). And yes, the board does support 1600FSB.
The problem is that I only have 4GB 667MHz (with heatsink, 4-4-4-12) Team Elite RAM. At default setting the board automatically overclocks the RAM to 800MHz cause it sets the FSB to 400MHz to achieve 1600MHz.
I have tried lowering the FSB (which also lowers the CPU speed because I didn't adjust the ratio). I have tried 200, 266, 333 and 400 but nothing works.
I will be able to boot to Vista but when I run Super PI or MemTest I get an error.

But seriously Motobuddy, with that chip I'm guessign it's a fsb and/or voltage problem. Don't use auto for either. hard set them to your chips specs and try that. Also, a question like that could be more easily answered if you posted your bios settings using the provided template.
And atomica. You probably need new RAM. If your RAM can't OC to 800, there's little you can do or should with that chip. Besides, what are you doing with that chip and RAM that slow? Get some new RAM.

just to share with u guys... i was testing my ram with Transition Booster Enable (0), when using the top 3 memory dividers, i m getting a lot of error or cold boot, when i tried the 4th memory divider i forgot the ratio (3:4 or 4:5), i dont have any cold boot issue anymore....i tested my ram for about 2 hrs without any coldboot, it got me ddr1150 4-4-4-10-4 with PL 6 shown in memset, using the top 3 dividers, i wont be able to reach DDR800 with Transition Booster set to Enable(0), i believe this is due to the tight PL. Dont know if u guys experienced this or already know about this, i m suspecting that this mobo has issue with my ram. Plz respond if u have the same issue, thanks :)

I've just "upgraded" from 802 to 907. Found out the hard way that saved settings from 802 don't work in 907. Oh and yea, you can't back flash from 907 to 802. tried everything down to AFUDOS, no luck. Says bios is older version, end of story...
But would someone please please please tell me why I cant get this board to run at 1T command rate???
I'm at fsb = 404, mult=10 transaction booster disabled (0), (only way it will boot), static read control disabled. 4-4-4-10 which is real conservative at these settings. memory passes all memtest86 tests, but cpuz still reads 2T command rate (set to 1T in bios). Setting to 2T or auto in bios gives identical bandwidths in everest and sandra.
TIA

Hey all, great thread. I just got a new setup (see sig) and im dying to overclock my q6600. It idles about 25C with the stock cooler at 100%. It's Go stepping aswell. However i'd just like to know how often these cpu's fail for no apparant reason (i.e not my fault.) Am I taking any real risk of being left out of pocket if i void the warranty? Also im having problems setting my BIOS to boot my ram at pc2-8500. I tried changing the default setting from auto up to the desired level in the bios and sometimes it boots and works fine for hours (once it gets past boot) but half the time it locks up and wont get past the 'Gamers Republic' splash screen. Am i going to need to adjust the FSB or something in order to get this RAM to run stable at his rated speed? Also I can't see any settings to increase the voltage on the RAM or is this automatic? This is all happening on a maximus formula btw. Im on a septemberish bios revision i think.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer. (Self confessed noob, particularly in the OC department)

1. Update to BIOS 0903 or 0907
2. Do you have the LCD Poster hooked up? I'll bet it's hanging on DET DRAM.
3. Up your RAM volts. The board defaults to 1.8-1.9. PC2 8500 usually needs 2.0 minimum to boot right.
4. CPUs (especially these new Intels) don't just randomly fail for no reason. It's very rare to have a chip just "die".
5. You can disable the splash screen (ROG logo) in the BIOS so you can see where it's hanging, but the LCD poster is better for seeing what the issue is.

Set the AI Overclock Tuner to Manual and you will see more options than you will ever need, including the voltage setting for DDR2. It is the first entry under Extreme Tweaker so you won't miss it.

Well i have found 907 to be the best one yet, i could not get stable on 400 fsb no matter what votages i used before, now i can get stable on 412x9 with only around 1.47 vcore and it just want to keep going, but my idle temps are around 35c and 52c after playing games, which means that the cores are at aroung 71-72 degress which im a bit worried about, i think im gonna lap the proccessor to see if it makes a difference:)

Hey thanks for the voltage advice. Seems to have worked. I set it to 2.2v (thanks to atomica for help on finding the setting) which i believe is the rated voltage for these modules. I'd just like someone to take a gander at my cpuz memory readings just to see if all looks well. The rated timings for these sticks are 5-5-5-15, i havent touched the timings in bios yet however. I did update the bios to 0907 as advised.

Plz try 2.1 volts as the board overvolts the ram slots, setting 2.1 will give you about 2.2 volts... don't want ya too waste ya dimms  and yeah you can change TRAS from 18 to 15 mate no worries there

trying to get 8x400mhz prime stable, 1 core allways faults after a hour. My guess is that I try with a too low vcore, now its cranked up to 1.28v in bios, 9x333mhz went fine with 1.2v .

I would up the volts a notch or 2,
On bios 802 my q6600 required 1.42 volts for 425x8
Also you might want to up the PLL alittle

Atomica, you can't run your cpu at 400 fsb with the memory at 333. It's not the board, your ram is just too slow for your cpu.

Hi all
I build my first system couple of weeks ago and now started overclocking.
I can do 400 x 9 and 450 x 8 with settings on first page.
Problem is I can’t set my Vcore to manual figure. Anything I’m try, can’t even boot in
BIOS. But if I set Vcore on auto all fine. I flashed BIOS to 802 from retail and still no luck. I may leave as it is, but my temps is too high (core 0 and core 1 goes over 70-72 under Prime95).
Thanks and sorry for my English.
P.S. I already lapped my TRUE and processor and temps still high.
Got 5-6 C difference between Core 0, 1 and Core 2, 3

no kink sharp bend but no kink, those smart coils are a pos and got very brittle after awhile so they were removed. I do use the stock clamps on the fuzion block with small tie wraps for extra security.
Going to redo the loop tomorow, adding 2 MCW30's. might lengthen the res to pump tube to remove the sharp bend. Doubt its affecting performance but I looked at your cube mod and I must say its rather interesting, so advice from ppl more experienced than I is most welcomed.

Every board/chip combo is different. Why would you want such settings? Besides, it takes the fun out of tweaking the machine. Are you still having problems with your rig?

Nothing unexpected really. I just like a solid, proven reference to start from. It seems like people have differing opinions on bios for this board, and it also seems that most people are quadcores so I wonder if one bios favors the quads over another.
This board has been nothing but problems for me, but i do like it a lot. I just have to be a bit more patient. After a clean install of xp I've figured out that my sound card problem must be a Vista 64 problem. Good to know, i guess. Also, I have 9x400 stable right now. I'd like to see if I can push it a bit further but it might not be worth it with my current setup. Just because my cooling can take more that doesn't mean I need to give it more. Besides, once I have a GPU in the loop, temps won't be so favorable. Also, I think the memory I have causes stability issues over its rated speeds. I'm looking into some new memory for my setup, but I haven't figured out what to get yet.
Although I do enjoy OCing and figuring all this out, I HATE not getting it right and not knowing why. :shakes:

Weird thing hapened yesterday, I upgraded latest forcewares to my 64bit Vista, and shutdown took forever.
Than it did not boot at all and no picture on screen, I tought what the hell.
I did CLR CMOS atleast 4 times and no difference.
Tried other GFX card, no difference.
LCD Poster showed that DET DRAM all the time.
Then I removed RAM´s, no differecne.
Then I tried those OCZ momory modules one by one, and one bootted fine.
Then I tried other and same thing GFX cards fan blowed 100% and no picture on screen.
I thought that other memory died.
But after few hours I tried them again both installed and everuthing worked fine.
I just dont understand what caused this and why?
I also lost photos from 4GB PNY SD card that was in USB card reader.

Someone problems with the Ram´s? If so test @ default settings with memtest1.7. On my asus maximus is the ram controller damaged. Testet 4 brand new pairs of DRAMS. In dual channel mode 1 stick always errors. With one stick no errors. My board goes RMA after christmas.
cheers and
happy christmas to all

Did anyone find bios 0907 temp reporting a little to weird?
I've got e6750 (not yet OC) with thermarlright 120 extreme and in bios and asusprobe my temps are around 1 to 4 degree C. With asusprobe reporting sometimes 255 C. I've gone back to 0903 and my temps are around "normal".
So I'm interested in this:is this only my board or does somebody else have the same issues with 0907?

My CPU temps are 20C+ below actual, but the core temps seem to be accurate with the 0709 bios.
I have needed the following settings to get 3.6GHz, 1800MHz FSB and 1200MHz ram. Is the reason I need 1.63v's on the Northbridge due to my FSB and ram speed? Seems like my v settings on the NB are the highest?
Orthos running just to show temps under load:

How strange!
I'll leave it as is in the first post until I get a few more people report the same thing.
I'd go straight to bios 0903 as it does seem to be best for the majority of users now.
My non SE is REV 1.02G as well.

I also had that problem when I upgraded to 169.28 a few hours ago, It wouldn't post and I was so close to using my P5K, I had my maximus on a box testing it and it finally worked, so I cleaned up my chassis and then put it back in, Now I got a 5% better air flow because of the cleanup i did.

Hello!
Would somebode tell me BIOS settings for 0907, I would like to get 450x8, I copied some settings from this forums, but they didnt worked for me. When I tried to boot from 450x8 to windows poster wrote "DET DRAM". It works fine with 400x8 but that isnt enough for me =)
My rig:
Q6600 (1.25 VID) G0-stepping
ASUS Maximus formula SE
Transcend aXeram 1066mhz
EDIT: Okay it works now with 9x400 FSB, I'll drive prime95 now.
EDIT2: D'oh Fatal error, I'll go check volts
EDIT3: I raised CPU volts, Self test 768k begins now.

if you get the "det ram" hang try changing the transaction booster,
425x8 I set it to enabled /level 0 but if I set 450x8 and leave it like that I get the same problem. "det ram"
450x8 transaction booster set to auto and I boot just fine
It dosent hurt ram speed any or anything you can notice anyways
425x8 @1133MHZ /400 strap
Read = 9500 : Write = 7740 : Copy = 8308 : Latency = 52.1ns
450x8 @1080MHZ /333 strap
Read = 9587 : Write = 8207 : Copy = 8642 : Latency = 52.0ns

Oke some quick Questions before I start to setup this board along with a Q6600. What ram should I use for the sake of ease for starters on this new board: 2x1GB Ballistix PC8500 tracers, or the 2x2GB G.Skill PQ8000. The ballistix I used for my P5K deluxe , was running a nice 1200mhz 5-5-5-12 @ 2.05v. The G.Skill I didnt test it yet it is still new in the package, along with a new Q6600. So I try to run 400x9 at first. What Bios are u guys suggesting? 0903/ 0907? Thanks!

I've tried bumping the voltage up on the cpu, memory, NB, SB cpu PLL etc etc and I can not get past 443FSB. My temps only hit 48 on the core's and the cpu temp around 20 with prime going. If I try 450FSB my system wont even post. Any ideas on what I can try, with my temps being this low I wouldnt mind trying to hit 500x7.

Hi guys, this is my first post here. Normally spend my time on a less extreme OCing board :). Have been lurking around the Maxumus threads for a while, learning about OCing the Maximus Formula. Finally got a really decent stable clock so i thought I'd give something back by posting my BIOS setting. I know I got lucky with the CPU but the setting may help.
Specs:
CPU: Q6600
Revison: G0
FPO: L745A817
Clockspeed: 4095 Mhz
Vcore (under load in windows): 1.544v (1.5500 BIOS)
Vid (core temp): 1.2000v
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula Non SE
Cooling: Custom water
Thermal paste used: Artic Silver 5
CPU Temp: 77/77/68/71 - I need a new rad, + the IHS probably needs lapping, Core#3 is always much lower than the rest.

Same here, Non SE REV 1.02G :)
Anyone know were there is a listing of *stock* volts for NB, SB, etc on this board? Just because it runs at x on auto, doesn't mean that's stock. Just wondering where the "safe" range is for each. Anandtech partially discusses some of these in the link in the OP.

So guys, I just got my Maximus today, got it installed and am working on my OS right now...
No overclocking, just stock and my NB temps are at 42-45 idle... this seems a bit high. Any advice on how to drop this? I'm in a case w/great airflow, so short of hard mounting a fan on the NB (no idea how I'd do that) I'm at a loss.
what to do???

i used an enzotech CNB-S1 on the southbridge, just had to mod the holes on it as they are 2 far apart. for the mosfets i just left that part of the original cooling on the board; it is seperate from the heatpipe.

See the OP under "BIOS settings and what they do". It links to an article on Anandtech that explains this. (there is more than this blurb)
FSB Strap to Northbridge: Auto, 200, 266, 333, and 400. There once was a time when this single setting controlled a whole series of MCH performance configuration registers. Implemented in its current form, this option does little more than determine what memory dividers are available for use.
Thnx FZ1, it is now clear
can anyone help me get over my fsb :brick: ?
List your BIOS settings using the template in the OP. Pay attention to your NB voltage...see how it compares to what others have posted. This has a big impact on the FSB.

i used an enzotech CNB-S1 on the southbridge, just had to mod the holes on it as they are 2 far apart. for the mosfets i just left that part of the original cooling on the board; it is seperate from the heatpipe.
Did you use thermal paste on SB? And did you use this quartered ring from the Enzotech package around the SB-Chip?

i used arctic silver ceramic, not sure about the other part you are asking. i just had to bring the holes closer together to mount on sb. on a side note if you want to go with crossfire you probably want to use the lower high version.

List your BIOS settings using the template in the OP. Pay attention to your NB voltage...see how it compares to what others have posted. This has a big impact on the FSB.
i have don all the 450 mhz setups from page 1 and stille noting.
i run 460 alle auto , just not vcore an ram volt.

I got a Enzotech CNB-S1L. But after mounting a part of the board burned out(don`t know right words in english). So you used Ceramique for SB. Chill Factor should be also ok!?
What cooler do you use for NB? Also used AS Ceramique? Perhaps I will try your version of half pipe removing for SB and NB and stick with the rest for mosfets.
Edit:
Here 2 pics of the burned part:

i switched to water-cooling the northbridge. i used the swiftech mcw30. the mounting points are a little smaller than board hole distance but it fits. the heatpipe is hard to get off.

-using Chill Factor instead of AS5 (only have this both)
-using hair dryer for removing again (note for me)

So I've been playing with my OC for the last couple hours and I'm having a blast. Running 4.0 on my quad and my mem @ 1200. No problems (after figuring out crazy complicated bios)
I was doing some priming when I happened to notice that CPU-Z told me that I only had 3 gigs of memory... I flipped out thinking I had blown a stick and booted into bios. Bios says I still have 4 gigs... So I boot back into OS and CPU-Z still says 3 gigs.
I shut down and let it be for a minute and rebooted...
Gues how much ram I have now???

Sometimes CPU-z makes mistakes. After restarting it`s gone most of the times it happens.
But I noticed, that I had more mistakes in CPU-z, when my old ram was still in system, which ran not that great on the board, only 1000mhz max at 2gb(1066 specs).
With my 2gb Transcend 1200mhz, which run much better (they run there specs 1200mhz in 333strap and 400strap) I can not remember of seeing a CPU-z mistake with this board till now.

It seems that no matter what I do, I can not get this board stable. I even lowered my OC to 3.6 and I either get a soundacrd glitch, hangs in UT3 or something funky.
I'm not sure if it's becasue of the high voltage my chip needs (1.575 @3.6), but do you think this board needs RMA or am I simply not taking enought time with my OC?

Probably the latter. I haven't read through all of your posts but have you isolated the FSB, CPU and RAM to find out each of their limits? If not, how do you know what is causing the issue? There are a crapload of settings to mess with in this BIOS so there are a lot of options to try. Not the answer you prolly want to hear but getting a good OC is more art than science and it takes a lot of patience and trial and error.

agreed. The problem is I know my CPU max is 3.75 x10 stable at 1.65v and I know it'll run 3.6 stable at 1.575v, both on my old 680i. So far I've only been able to get 3.6 stable on this board. My memory seems to run stable at rated speeds, but when it goes over 400fsb I can't tell if the NB is hurting from the 4x1gb sticks or if the memory just oc's for crap so I'm trying to get it stable at <400fsb and 3.6 for the cpu. It actually passes Orthos for both memory and CPU, but I still get a soundcard glitch and stutters in UT3 which I'm told could be a latency problem.
Is it possible that this board isn't playing nice with my memory and CPU (more likely CPU)? I'd rather not replace either unless I have to.

at 450x8@1080 on the 333 strap
CPU Voltage : 1.50

I'll try that. I found that when I started to raise my fsb core voltage I gained some stability but it startes to get pretty high (1.64) and no stability was gained so I abandoned that method. The CPu Pll voltage is one of the few things I haven't messes with too much yet.
I was hesitant after anandtech's assesment of the setting:
CPU PLL Voltage: Maximum of 2.78V. Out of all the voltages the user can manipulate this one is by far the most dangerous. Maximum vCPUpll, as established by Intel, is 1.60V (default for this board) making 2.78V a whopping ~75% over specification! (As an aside, this would be the equivalent of subjecting your 65nm CPU to a core voltage of over 2.5V). Exercise extreme caution when utilizing higher values as setting this value too high can result in the CPUs "losing cores" after being subjected to voltage in excess of ~2.0V. The good news is that we did not see an increase in overclocking potential with voltages above 1.68V.
However, It seems like I need to start exploring the pll voltage and transaction booster settings a bit more.
Another funny thing has been happening as well. My keyboard has a delay in regards to when it get power durring boot. I actually have to wait at the Vista login screen for 5-10 seconds before the keyboard or mouse will work. I don't think it's a sb voltage issue bacause the problem surfaced without touching sb voltages.

Hey guys, I see there is a new version of Maximus Formula non se. Anyone have any experience with how well the new NB/SB/PWM heatsink works, or would it be recommended to remove and replace them with aftermarket pieces.
Also I should probally be noted that the mobo would be powering a overclocked X3210 that is watercooled, so there wont be much airflow around the mobo.
There's a new version? There has always been a non-SE version. I guess you can't have a special edition if you don't have a regular edition ;)

It might help if we could determine what other boards push for the cpu pll, especially ones without this as a bios option; and detmine whether or not this is unique to the maximus.

But before with my old ram, I could see this mistake in the amount a few times. The system was prime and memtest stable but the ram wasn`t running that good, only 1000mhz with 2gb 8500.
Perhaps there is a relation btween this mistake from cpu-z and bad running ram/ram that doesn`t run specs or it`s just a mistake of cpu-z, would be interesting to know.

Also, can anyone else suggest any tests I can run to figure out where my board is failing? My RAM and CPU are both testing stable and the voltage on them is as straight as can be.
Your PSU #'s look fine. PCP&C PSU's are great.
Have you tried running on a 1:1 divider and relaxing your timings to rule out RAM instability?

Yep. One set at a time, first at 333 then at 266. Funny, the system bahaves almost exactly the same as when I have it clocked to 3.6 @ 400fsb. I'm going to test the cpu overnight again and if it passes as I expect it will, this board is coming out. I really wish newegg would give me a refund so I could just get something else. I must be doomed to fail with every maximus I touch! There are absolutely NO settings I can find at any speed that will give me stability. This sucks! I'm soooo done with this board, it broke me. :brick:
Edit: I'm actually having second thoughts now. Should I order another maximus? or move on? I liked this board so much in theory, but I got 2 defective boards in a row.

anyone else this problem. I run my sys @ 460x8 with 1.7CPU PLL in the bios setting. But in hardware monitoring in bios it shows crazy "1.875" CPU PLL. Is that normal???? Bios is 0907.

Edit: I'm actually having second thoughts now. Should I order another maximus? or move on? I liked this board so much in theory, but I got 2 defective boards in a row. I think you are completely in the wrong direction with ya settings mate, also your CPU needs way too much Vcore to be stable at 3.6Ghz so I think it just prefers a lower clock in general... you are adapting Quad settings for ya E6700 and more voltage isn't always better, my E6850 didn't like it on my 680i ( CPU VTT ) and needed to be way lower then what I used for my quad on that board...
Just reflash the bios, reset all to defaults and start from zero, try first with 2 dimms, disable transaction booster and static read and then continue ... and build up slowly...

thx for the help. you are right. 1.58 in the bios gives me 1.7 real on monitoring.
I´m a bit unhappy with my CPU. Can´t get over 460x8 or 430x9. Still reboots whatever I change no sucess. Raised vcore from 1.4375 up to 1.51vcore step by step still reboot after stressing the CPU.
Is this the max for the CPU??:(

Hi!
I bought the Maximus Formula SE and fired it up with a C2D 6850.
So here are my problems I've:
- I can only leave the Vcore setting on auto (or set it manually to a value 1,325 or less). All values above will lead to no boot. The auto value sets it to 1,325 (BIOS and CPUZ show this value)
- My NB temp is even idle at around 57 C and at full load even around 65C+.
I use default coolings (no watercooling installed) on NB. I've no problem with CPU temp. I use the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with a Scythe S-FLEX 1200, 120x120x25mm cooler. I also use 2 casecoolers (both 120 mm) and only top quality components (Enermax Infinity 650 Power supply, Corsair RAM, ...).
Concerned with my NB temp I searched Intel page for X38 specs. The official Intel NB max temp is over 90 C, so my temp is fine and I've no probs with stability (ran all kinds of tests over 48 hours with CPU overclocked 435x8 setting)
So I wonder how u guys get NB temps about 45 C loaded and all talk about unstability with temps over 50 C. T%his isn't true, as my example and official Intel document proves.
Even without OCing my NB temp is in Idle far above 50C, and this in a well cooled room and 100% stable running....
someone confirms this NB temps and also have this strange behavier with only auto set vcore working?

To further, does anyone have problems sometimes on reboot still getting the "DET DRAM" POST error, or sometimes after the post reset double boot, the board will reboot 1 more time and you hear like a cap discharging then you gotta dump value ram into a DIMM?
Yes, I get the Det Ram post error. Btw thanks for your posts in the big thread youve been quite helpful.
Its funny but crackling sound and UT crash doesnt mean instability. Google the Ut3 crash and you ll see. Most people have it.
And something else.
I see many misleading posts here, I dont like the way some people OC. Getting every voltage they see as high as they can without finding the sweet spots. For example to get 400 fsb stable you dont need 1.4x voltage. Even lower works. People that dont use WC for their NB should be careful of their voltages.
Dont forget that each mobo gives different voltages even if you set the same settings in bios.
It is very important that people monitor the temps in full load, OCCT and everest work fine.

Well, unfortunately for me, I DO require more than 1.4v on NB for stable operation with 4GB of D9GMH and a quad core. My board requires 1.5v for proper operation.
wit ha dualcore, yes, I can use less votlage, but there is far less load put on the northbridge from a dualcore than from a quadcore, so while those volts may be good for you, there is no way you can say that ANY votlage is too much, or too little...it depends on alot of things, not just the board! Instaleld components and cooling greatly have an affect on required voltage!

I tested my QX9650 on the maximus formula non-SE. 0907 bios seem to be the better on my mobo for the stability, but sometimes, it is very hard to recover after black screen. Cut the power suply, cmos don't work. I need to use before my E6850. Someone have an idea ?
I just installed my Formula NON -SE rev 1.03g, it came with the BIOS 0505 along with a Q6600, and various ram laying here( Crucial 2GB/ G.SKill 4GB), still dont know if there is a improvement from 0802 official BIOS to the newer betas 0903/ 0907, or shall I wait for a official release. I just want to run 400x9 or 425x9 , depend how good my new Q6600 is, it has a VID of 1.2125, seems promosing. So can I achieve this with 0802, without bumping to much volts, and having some nice ram overclock aswell.

I have exact the same vid on my CPU as you. My results are:
440x8 -> 1.3375vcore
450x8 -> 1.3500vcore
460x8 -> 1.4375vcore
410x9 -> 1.4000vcore
420x9 -> 1.4400vcore
all min. 5hours prime stable.
can´t go over 420x9 got still reboots in prime95. Also over 1.5xvcore on the CPU.
Yea it seems low VIDs isnt telling everything, I think I just have to test this sucker out:)

I know. Asus told me the crackle is a defective soundcard, that's why it's going back.
I guess different people defina instability differently. I define it as anything but ideal performance. UT3 didn't stutter at all on the first maximus I had or on my 680i.

I got my non-SE today. It`s revision 1.03G and I installed it with the whole asus pipe still mounted first. I flashed to 0903 and the settings from 1. post for 3,6ghz are working with one change: I had to lower TB from enabled level 1 to enabled level 2 and it works, rest is still the same but did only short tests with prime and memtest.
My NB temperature is very good with standard asus pipe: 39° idle and 44-45° load.
Going to play wc3 now :)
Will completely testing this board the next days/week.
I got my non-SE today. It`s revision 1.03G and I installed it with the whole asus pipe still mounted first. FYI - I hear it's easier to get the heatpipe/sinks off if you do it before using as it heats up and sets during use. If you are planning on reseating it, I would do it sooner than later.

Pretty stupid, huh. Newegg is giving me a refund though so I have a new one on order. I'll send the old one out as soon as I get the new one. I swear, the first board I got was awesome, just the firewire didn't work. This one is chugging away at 400fsb with no problems now, just the stupid soundcard. It kills me, but I do like this board a lot and can't wait for a healthy one.

Temps are very good and I`m afraid of doing this again because I don`t know what the reason for the dead of the board was.
And it`s not that hard to remove after using board for a while, that is what I did with last board.
Just buy the audio card from someone not using it. A lot of ppl use SB X-Fi cards etc
How is the soundcard that came with this board? Is it any much worse then X-Fi Extreme Music?

Anyone had some problems with the USB ports when trying to connect and transfer any data to WD Passport 160GB (external non powered USB HDD) for example?!?!
When i try to connect my WD Passport on the usb ports at the back of the mobo, and start to copy any data to my WD, i loose the connection to the WD HDD.
It's not a PSU problem (Seasonic 700W), OS problem (have Vista Ultimate 64Bit, but in XP with a fresh installation i've the same problem), WD Passport 160GB work fine on any other PC, and it's not the MB (I think), because i had the chance to test other one, and had the exactly the same problem!
My USB front ports (Silverstone TJ07) connected to the USB headers on MB, have the same problem. If i connect the WD Passport 160GB there, the HDD turn on but i can listen a "click" (it sounds like the HDD start spinnig but doesn't have power to boot) and then stop, another "click" and then stop (and so on), and i don't even get OS to recognise the HDD.
With USB pen like Corsair 2 or 4GB i don't have any problems at the same usb ports! Even in the front USB ports of the TJ07 connected to USB headers on MB.
Any suggestions?
Thx!

Are you using an usb extension cable?
Grnfinger: No. Only the mini-usb->usb cable that came with the WD Passport 160GB.
One strange thing, is when i connect this WD Passport 160GB on a friend PC, with the same hardware (except gpu's and CPU - my friend have 2 x ATI HD3870 in CF and QX9650), this WD Passport works like a charm! In the front ports (on a TJ07 too) and the back ports!
At first, i was thinking it could be my usb frontal with some kind of prob, but now i don't have any clues about what's wrong!!!

You might also check back in a bit when others have checkd the thread, my external drive requires separate AC power, a bit of a pain sometimes but its never let me down

I have been working on 4.0
I can boot and have Vista load but I cant bench/stress anything, the moment all 4 cores go full load the pc bsod.
I'm not pumping anything beyond 1.575 to my cpu and I'm not very comfy with 1.575 to begin with.

I'm not working on lowering anything just yet... After my 6 hour prime run, I bumped my FSB up to 450 and am now priming away at 4.05 at the same settings. I'm gonna push to 4.1 and get stable there before I start lowering voltages. 6 more ticks on my FSB to go... 4.1 here I come!
Sure nelws1  I took also your settings into account , I am currently testing CPU only. As soon i found a stable cpu clock I will try your ram settings:up:
Priming now almost 4 hours small ffts @ 1.272 400x9

WOW! damn nice cpu you have there. I would call that stable for sure @ the 4 hour mark.
heh thnx :D I will run at least 1 full Prime small ffts loop , so approxi 9 and half hour, before I try to push further. Crossing fingers:), but I just put the ram to 1:1 800 5-5-5-15 to rule out any instabilitys causing by ram.

just for the hell of it, I too just tried 445fsb X 9 for 4.05GHz. After saving and existing the BIOS, the PC posted and the POST screen said, Unreconizable CPU, update your biOS for increased performance WTF:shrug: No matter what Vcore I set for CPU/NB/SB/etc... I kept getting the same message. WEIRD? I'm back to my 100% stable Low voltage OC of 425x9 for 3.83GHz. Im using bios 903, has anyone ever seen this issue before?

look under the hardware monitor in the BIOS, I'll bet with your 1.5x voltage setting your NB is actually at 1.6+Vcore. This board overvolts everything so bad, it is crazy.
How is the soundcard that came with this board? Is it any much worse then X-Fi Extreme Music?

Oke I got my Q6600 400x9 - 3.6ghz @ 1.288v prime small ffts stable for 10 hours+, now I am trying 425x9 @ 1.35vcore. But I am wondering if I bumped enough volts: I used 1.4v FSBv bios( 1.44 actual) and 1.49 v NB bios ( 1.51 actual). for 400x9, is this enough for 425x9? try to rule out this before I kept bumping vcore after it fails.

1. Already contact asus united states, they always trying to send me away. They said the driver is from Microsoft, and want me to contact microsoft.(Everytime I call, they just try to send me away or answer some wrong solution.)
2. Contact asus headquarter: ASUS Taiwan. Finally, I got the answer, they said that one is the AiBooster's device. You can either disable it in BIOS(under advanced -> jump free...) or install the driver from AiBooster software manually(after downloaded the AiBooster zip file, unzip it, it's under acpi or acpi64 with 64-bit directory. Of course, you still can install the whole AiBooster software).

So, think it's time for clearing up some things and bringing in some facts regarding the NB temp storys going around:
Official Intel X38 thermal spec sheet:
ftp://download.intel.com/design/chipsets/designex/31761201.pdf
from this:
"Component System Bus
Speed
Memory
Frequency
Max Idle
Power
TDP TC-MIN TC-MAX
Intel® 82X38 MCH 1333 MT/s 1333 MT/s 12.3 W 26.5 W 0 °C 92 °C
Advanced Fan Speed Control monitors an embedded thermal sensor. The maximum
operating limit when monitoring this thermal sensor is TCONTROL. For the MCH, this
value is 92 °C. This value should be programmed into the appropriate register of
Intel® Quiet System Technology (Intel® QST), as the maximum sensor temperature
for operation of the MCH."
Set NB voltage in BIOS to auto I get very high 1,648 voltages and idle NB temp of 69 C.
Manually set it to 1,53 brings 1,568v.
Set to 1,49 (the last green value in BIOS) brings 1,520v anf idle temp of 63 C.
All values are prime stable for 24 hours running 3d mark also in loop in background. The temps are with CPU oced 433x8= 3464 MHz(C2D E6850). Vcore is set to auto (1,320v) cause all manually higher set vcores lead to no boot.
Hope this clears up some storys about too high NB temps. As long as NB temp is less than 92 C all is fine. My 77 C when loaded are rockstable as the official Intel specs backups.

look under the hardware monitor in the BIOS, I'll bet with your 1.5x voltage setting your NB is actually at 1.6+Vcore. This board overvolts everything so bad, it is crazy.
Went and checked this morning... My NB wasn't being overvolted all that bad (1.56) but my PLL voltage was insane! Set at 1.6 even, the board had it overvolted up to 1.74!
Thanks newls1 for the heads up. I dropped it down to 1.5 and it still gets overvolted to 1.61. So as 1.5 is the lowest selectable voltage, I guess that's as low as we can go?
I got mine set @ 1.5 BIOS and 1.6v @ everest
I wasnt aware that I have to install a EPU driver? did I miss something? where on the CD is this driver, and what does it do? Is my motherboard no running at optimal performance without this driver?
