View Full Version : EVGA 780i NB Cooling?

Is the stock cooling decent enough w/ an active fan blowing on the NB or should I replace it with a third party heat sink (I'm thinking thermaltake Extreme spirit 2)?
I've never replaced any NB /SB / mosfet set up before and I'm worried that i might break the chips.
I am OCing as far as I can go, so I need good cooling. My current mobo (see sig) appears to work well enough w/ active cooling on the NB, so I'm not sure yet.

I can get a good deal on the board, so I am ordering it tomorrow. I can't get passed 3.780ghz w/ my q6600 on my p5k deluxe and I wanted to take a stab at it w/ a newer board.
I could also run in my liquid cooling loop, but I was curious of there were any good air solutions? I'd be more than happy to try that.

you can always take TRUE and mod it so it fits the nb :D
You can fit a 60mm fan onto it, that will take the noise away, found that on the evga forums.. There is a mod where you remove the sb cooler as well, but there you need the saw of that part from the rest.. Personally I would love to see thermalright make a cooler for the NB..
the extreme spirit will not cover the NF200 chip..You have to remember under the Fan on the 780i you have 2 chips you have to cover...As far as I know there is no Aircooling that besides the stock one that will do this...But what I did for a friend was Cut down all the rubber stoppers under the stock cooler plus I filed down the standoffs...So instead of booting at 100c it now boots at 43c loads at 55c..I also zipped tied a AMD AM2 heatsink fan on top of the heatsink...
Did the same with rubber mounts, but due to the small transistors (or what it is) I desided not file down the standoffs on the SB heatsink.. One solution would be to fit the thermalright coolers with homemade mounting kit.. It's abit sad that they have chosen to make the board with so crappy cooling solution.. That must be the reason why Evga is making a new 780i board..

Thanks for the input guys. I am actually not getting this board sadly. I found a site offering it for 26.99 ( yes, 27 bucks) and I decided to wait till today to order it and the price went back up. It was an 89% discount. I don't want to drop that kinda cash on the board, but if they are crazy enough to have that sale, I'll definitely buy it.
Still, continue this discussion since there's a few people out there who probably need help with this.
Thanks guys.

you bet...mine will be here from step-up early next week and I have a solution for the southbridge but quite lost on the northbridge. There are a couple of watercooling solutions but that would require another 150 bucks between a new pump and WB. I just spent 100 bucks upgrading it with a new CPU block.
You could make a custom bracket for HR-05 / HR-05 SLI, but it's not to easy.. I sold my 780i due the noise, it was hot and loud, and after I got a V2000, where the mobo is turned the other way, it got even hotter.. It's the dummest design of mobo I've seen.. So my advice would be to with ASUS or MSI version that features a sane cooling solution, the reference versions are just plain stupid.. And the MSI version use better components as well (dunno if ASUS does as well)..

I would be down with that but mine is through the setup-up...80 bucks. Don't feel like shelling out 200 or 300 bucks more then hope I can get some of that money out of my 780i. I keep seeing the foam shaving works pretty good. I'll give that a try and if I must...*sigh* buy a new pump and waterblock then I guess that is what I will have to do.

you could replace the TIM with ceramique. Someone in the 780i in the intel forum said it lowered his temps to 50ish if i remember correctly.

I did end up doing the foam shaving and using some artic silver. Temps are mid to high 40's. This factory setup, I would say, is adequate with those two modifications. So far, working like a champ.
