Hi, I just bought a Coolermaster eXtreme Power Duo 650W PSU to replace the winpower 650 I had after some system instability
but damn it's loud, it's the loudest psu I've heard for nearly 10 years
the rated noise level is 20Db and it sounds like 60 to me,
the noise is mostly airflow like the fan is stuck at fullspeed
it's supposed tto support intelligent fanspeed or something but it's going full (i should hope with the crazy noise ¬¬ )
any help? this is so loud I can't live with it

CM Extreme units are known to be pretty loud. Others have issues where there's some sort of rattling noise coming from the space between fan and fan grille.
Best thing I can suggest would be a fan swap. A Yate Loon 120mm low speed fan would do nicely (and is very inexpensive).

ah, thanks :)
how the hell can they put <20db on the box as an advertising feature when it clearly is nowhere near as quiet,
they should be done for false advertisisng (the premise I bought this psu was on the <20db rating)

Just like with SienX fans and their misleading sound and cfm ratings, did the CM power supply actually specify WHEN the fan on the power supply was <20dBa? My guess is at very low loads, hence very slow fan speeds. Cannot blame them for marketing like that.....they're not the only ones out there.
Marketing is just that, esp. in power supplies. Look at a lot of claims for efficiency......many tout a lot more than 80% efficiency....but when really tested independently, the high efficiency is at one load out of the power supply's entire load range, such as at 50% load. Not uncommon at all. It's a lot like PCP&C calling their power supplies quiet.....and I guess they are, esp. if you compare them to leaf blowers. ;)

I underclocked the cpu, reduced ram speed and volts to lower power usage and it was still the same level of noise
when I play games with the pc it doesn't get louder, but it's the same noise level as the lowest power usage i could use on the pc
to quote the box "super silent operation with intelligent fan speed control (<20dBA)"
it has no speed control; manual or automatic and is in no way super silent :(

would I be able to use an akasa amber?
I literally can't put up with a few more days of this noise,
i'm worried about if a replacement fan will push enough air
and also if the fan is at 12v standard (would it be possible or safe to 7v it?

Just getting a decent PSU is not an option?

Just getting a decent PSU is not an option?
I thought I had,
I just spent $140 yesterday on this loud abomination
a new psu isn't an option for 2 weeks unfortunately,
I just spent about £5,000 on guitars and equipment so for the next two weeks i'm skint
I'll report back in half an hour to let you know if the amberfan is any good :)

No. You hadn't.
Cooler Master Real Power Pros are good.
Cooler Master eXtreme Powers are rated at peak instead of continuous and rated at room temperature as opposed to operating temperature. They're only good if you get them almost free after rebate.
If you "just got it" then you should just return it and get something different. If you open it up and replace the fan, you void the warranty. Then you're REALLY stuck with that PSU.

god, i've had one of those days......
I converted the amber from 3 pins to two pins
then spent an hour trying to figure out why my pc wouldn't turn back on,
then found I left the cmos jumper on LOL
after a reboot I got a cpu is unworkable error, I reseated it and put my cpu cooler back on and two of the locking pins broke (arctic 7 has cheap plastic feet)
after resetting cmos again the computer works fine
the psu is a lot quiter now but i'm lying it horizontally so the cpu heatsink is usable untill tomorrow when I'll get a new one

yeah :( .......too late
it's quiet now, i'm going to use it for two weeks untill I upgrade the this psu shall be used in a backup pc or i'll use it on my brothers
i'm only running a 9600gt so I'm not using anything extreme that could really stress the psu until then
