This is really beginning to /swearword me off.
Last week i had like 2 raids:
-RAID1 (2x250samsungs) booting XP
-RAID10 (4x80maxtors) booting VISTA
I used Vista for about 6 days, didn't do anything demanding, just played a bit o' CoD4.
Then, all of a sudden, the RAID10 decided to throw a wobbly and i haven't been able to use it since.
So i decided to de-RAID the RAID 10 into 4 SEPERATE harddrives, i then tried to RAID1 2 of them;didn't work, i tried RAID0; didn't work.
So i took out 3outof4 hdds and decided just to have like 1 x80gbmaxtor booting VISTA and then another 80gbmaxtor booting XP and then have the RAID1 (samsung) as a storage drive.

AT the moment, i've got XP installed on the samsung RAID1 and i'm TRYING to install VISTA on one of the 80gbmaxtors.
Whenever i go to install vista(home premium upgrade) on the 1x80gbmaxtor i get to the screen where you choose where to install VISTA, and i keep getting this message
'Windows cannot find a system volume that meets proper critera'

I've tried everything!
formatted it, formatted again, created a new partition, all that kinda stuff.

I'm using an Gigabyte 935 DS3R
Samsung RAID1 is on the Gigaraid
and the
Maxtor HDD is on the Intel ICH9r

I've went into the bios, disabled the sataraid (orwhateverit'scalled,i'mincollegeandcan'treallyre memberwhatitwas)

The maxtor is visible on My Computer when i boot into XP from the samsung RAID0, it's even visible in the bios.

I can move files to it, i can run HDtune on it, i can do everything on it, except installing VISTA!

I've completely given up on intel ICH9r chipset ><

WHY CAN'T GIGABYTE EXPAND THEIR PORTS FROM 2 to F**KING 4!

anyone else having/experience/criedover this problem?

Any help would be :welcome: x1337

Yea or else vista wont see it as a drive it can use. Even if you format it within the install

Still, nothing..

Btw, i'm still on F4 BIOS, it's stable..enough..
is there any need to update to like what is it? F11?
Would this cause any problems with the ich9r?

You need to unhide your partitions and set as active prolly.

You need to install XP first, then install Vista. You have an upgrade version which will only install over a previous OS. It will not install on a clean partition.

Actually, that is quite incorrect. The upgrade versions of Vista, at least the premiums, ultimate, and business versions, will install as a clean install.

The install trick, though, is to NOT input your activation key during the first install of Vista....that's right, first install.

You install the UG of Vista on a clean hard drive and don't input your key....just run it as a 30-day eval. copy.....which Vista gives the choice of instead of putting in your key.

THEN, you reinstall the UG Vista again, right on top of the Vista install you just put on that clean hard drive.

Vista will then "upgrade" the previously installed, but not activated, Vista install. This time through, you do put in your key for activation.

It works.....have done it myself three times on three different machines. Worked each and every time without a hitch. And since we obtained the Vista Ultimate UG copies for well under half retail price, from a CompUSA that was closing last year, it worked out to be a very good deal.

There is no way you have done that. Sorry, you'll have to prove that. You cannot install it at all, much less avoid entering your activation key. I believe you're thinking of the evaluation copy that microsoft released.

EDIT: After looking at that article linked below, I apologize to C'Dale.......I had no idea this was possible, nor had I heard of anyone doing it. However, I've searched around and cannot find anywhere that sells the upgrade version that much less to make it worth it. I would just as soon buy the full version.

cant you install vista upgrade as a clean install with your old xp key as proof?

if not then that's a real bummer.

say i got xp now; and i wanted to clean install a vista upgrade onto another physical disk is that possible?

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68767-clean-install-upgrade-vista.html
INFO: This will show you how to do a CLEAN install with a Express or Retail Upgrade Version of Vista instead of having to install your previous OS (EX: XP) then Vista. This will prevent compatibility issues between the previous OS and Vista.

WHY: You have a legal copy of XP and you do not want to install XP and then install Vista from within XP. I noticed, that a lot of people that installed Vista this way are experiencing some problems due to remnants of XP messing Vista up. This will also work if you are upgrading to the 64 bit Vista from a 32 bit Upgrade Vista version.
