Hi right now I have bionc turned off reason being my machine is overheating right now. reason being dust got the better of it, and well my main is also my tivo. I wish I could turn it back on but as soon as I let boinc loose it spikes in the 70C range considering this thing is undervolted @ 2.7 ghz (e4300) around 1.1V it should get nowhere near that temp. cause with that voltage even OC'ed it should be no more than 90W and with my case the stock HSF should handle 120W easy (airflow inside the case is around 100 cfm hehe and that's with low running fans. Anyway till I can get my main torn apart and cleaned is there anyway to limit cpu usage to 50% and I dun mean just run one core that would be a disaster. unequal heat means die stress
and tips ?

Go to Device Profiles section of your My Grid page. Under Basic Options, set processor time to 50%, then save. You can also limit the amount of memory used for BOINC.

Another option would be to use the UD client instead of BOINC. Load will never go above 60%. But only a couple of WCG projects (FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding 2) still can be run with the UD client.

Sure,

Just go to Advanced/Preferences/processor usage tab. The field for the CPU usage is towards the bottom of the menu.

Just set it for 50%, hit OK and you're all set.

and clean those dust bunnies out of there:)

Absolutely there is a way. I do this with my lappy.
Simply go into the profile on the WCG page that the machine uses, i.e. "default, school, work, home" and modify that profile to whatever you think will work. For my dual core lappy, I use 60% to keep it running cool.

When you have modified the profile on the WCG page, go into boinc on that machine and hit "advanced">"preferences">"clear" this will force boinc to run your new profile.

Next go to "taskmgr" and insure that the machine has a somewhat sawtooth pattern going, on the "performance" screen. You should see the thing running cooler. Repeat the above steps until it is to your liking.

Side Note, I would like to see WCG provide more profile options. You only have 4 to tweak. If you run a farm of any size, you have to constantly balance what machines run what profile in order to optimize your farm performance.....but I digress....:slobber:

If you have any more questions on how this is done, please ask. Many smart folks have "seen and done that" here... And I agree, differential temps and die stress will ultimately kill your CPU.....RAM is something to watch. WCG and D9 chips don't seem to be friends....

Bob

EDIT: Dang, I either have to type faster or provide less answer. I started with zero replies to this post and two answers got in front....  That's all good because they provided a more complete answer on modifying the WCG profile and I provided more of an answer on the client/machine side. Kudos to Sierra and Mcoffey.... Terr, let us know your result,or if anything else comes up. We all learn from sharing here. (I just recently found that a P4 Northy, I thought was providing useful WUs, may not have been. When i find out what happened there, I'll post here....)

ddr2-6400-c4 twinx running quite alrighty :P altough at spd settings my putercrashes running it at 300 Mhz instead of 400 but that means it's in sync, the MB is the crapper voltage options non existant and until I can afford a PCIexpress card better than my x1600agp (need that for my HD playback 1600x1200 res.) I'm stuck MB wise Although I know this proc should be able to hit the 3.3 ghz mark on 1.4V easy 1.1V @ 2.7ghz. well that 600 mhz is gonna have to wait till I gots myself out of this hole.
wish I could afford a E 4500 right now that thing could get this MB some more juice :P
anyways Dustbunnies LOL at my fan throughput even filtered I got lots of that after like 6 months.

PS MB is 775dual-VSTA POS got it for one reason AGP and DDR although I remedied the DDR situation

From your sig-----BTW that girl is my version of muddflap on my stacy common artwork not obcene (for the censors out there)

Is this still current for the avatar you run now? If so, I don't understand the comment??? (But I'm a self-proclaimed old fart...!)

As a side note.....and more on your topic, did you get your profile/client to behave as you intended?

Regards,
Bob

My sig is offline till I can find a decent font to make repairs can't find the original fonts I used lol, you'll see in two three days I'm gonna get on it now, and yes it's boinc is doing what I intended
