Since these upstarts from ESL are showing their "power" with their 5850 members, why don't we do a little internal motivating and see if we can match these guys during their March challenge.
Sort of like kicking sand in their faces..:D

Recruiting drive!
God knows enough of the existing teamsters have heavily loaded CC's already.
It would be fun to rise to the challenge though! XS sections unite! =)

I'm all for increasing production. We probably would have equaled their numbers today. But I noticed Victor's production was below normal.

Also, I think we need to keep things in perspective.

Total points

XtremeSystems - 1,399,529,239
ESL - 41,417,184

Even if they doubled our daily numbers, it would take them almost a year to catch us.

Maybe a small no pressure internal drive here at XS.
Make a few PM's each, maybe do a every 5 day manual bench to make sure your claims are right..Little stuff just to maximise what we have..
And keep Serlv from rebooting machines..

On the 7th I get my TT1200W, so I will have a second system up and running, getting my main cruncher up to night, if I ever finish it..........I am such a slacker.

I can offer some subtle motivation?
Blocking your access to WCG for a week?
Would that help generate the time for you to get your arse in gear?..:ROTF:

i couldn't pay that much for a chair either. but for years i used acheap, POCrap plastic chair that came with an old roommate's $100 drawing board/table.

That thing almost crippled me after a year or two.
i finally broke down and sprung for a sweet chair. was well over $300, plus a not inconsiderable chunk for shipping. it was frm the same company that did those Aeron chairs. a totally different model/design, but very ergonomically sweet. i love it. does everything but give BJ's.

when my Dad died he left behind a $500 computer chair. that one is in the computer room.

For plastic chair it really isn't too bad and I just won't spend the money on a new chair - money must go to the car or more computer stuff! :p:

Oh yeah that's my closet with my cardboard army in it. That extension cord brings power from the only other circuit in the room so I don't have everything on one circuit. 6 crunchers + main PC + microwave + mini fridge + coffee maker all on one circuit struck me as possibly pushing it...

The total membership numbers are also deceiving because the percentage of people actually crunching on any given day is much lower. In our case, for example, only about 260 XS members are returning results on a daily basis. It would be nice if some of our less active members could contribute, even a small amount. Hint, hint.:) They could even run at 50% load if they are worried about their power bills.

Amen to that..Time to make some phone calls and motivate people!

(Or scare the living crap out of them when they realise it's me on the phone)

I know you will do a good job of convincing people to contribute.

It might be worth a bet though that theres one or two IT guys running it though for the college. Either way, its nice that an institution mans up the extra power cost for this.

I agree.. Lots of wasted PC power in these schools.
Even if all set to 50% cpu usage they could bring a huge amount of firepower to what we do and cut years off of the work that has to be done.
Imagine a place like MIT getting involved with the machinery they have.

Well.... my lab did just get a quad-core Dell in today that I "claimed" for Chip-chip analysis. Since I'm the de-facto admin for the computers in the lab, I could probably get some wcg action going on...

well my drops in the bucket are starting to trickle again, got one quad up.

I don't think the 3220 is kicking though, giving me -- on the 680i, though the QX6700 started up fine.

Not sure why the 3220 doesn't want to kick over...........it was fine before the move, packed it away with my X6800 and E4300 and they both worked fine.

Ah hell, I woudl have been all over that as soon as I could get my grubby digits on it lol.

I know this won't happen, but I wish WCG would separate colleges and universities from real individual users. It's great that universities are contributing to the cause. But RCTC and Marist College are not individual users or members like those of us here are.

That's a toughie..But where to make the cut.. Guys like RSmura have "office" machines on their accounts.. I think what matters is WE know who is who and thats all that really matters..
Besides, if it gets the work done and gives someone a little epeen tingle it's a good thing in the long run..;)

There are some "home" crunchers that probably are disheartened by big numbers posted by the Corporate/Institutional cruncher.

The Corporate/Institutional crunchers really give a project a huge boost, but overall the backbone of DC is the little guy with a couple of boxes that plugs along and posts numbers everyday. This is evident in the ESL group, no big hitters, just organized players making an impact as a group.

ALL crunching is good but it might be more fun for some if there was a division of points by participant provided equipment source. Won't happen though:)

This is also why Team 2ch is so strong. They have a few heavy hitters. But 50% or more of their large team (6,000+) is crunching on a daily basis. I looked at the stats. They had 3,163 BOINC users returning results yesterday. By comparison we had 276 members returning results. Imagine our daily total if 500 of our members were crunching on a daily basis.

Ultimately people have to motivate themselves. I think most new members to the team receive encouragement and advice. Some chose to stay and become active participants, while others drift away for whatever reasons. Crunching is first and foremost about helping science. But it's also about friendship and helping each other. It's about the only thing I do with my computers that I consider really worthwhile. Anyone can surf the net and post drivel.

That is what it is about. I would crunch for no credits or for 1 point per WU. Credit does not matter to me but is a giant motivator for all projects.

I truly HOPE the science will benefit someone, the children of our future or the present elderly or Anyone, and that is my reason to crunch and why I crunch the projects that I do or have.

And yes, 276 XTREME members:up:

Should make it an automatic ban if someone on XS owns a quad without crunching...

I nominate the above for XS WCG quote of the year. Granted, I've only been around for four months but, hey, it's a great quote! :D

Of course, there are many others including back and forths concerning sheep fluffing and the like. Hmm Riptide's recent Blarney Stone remark comes to mind as well :p:

A new thread on this topic perhaps? I'll let someone else start it... :)
