Last night they found a vials of ricin in Vegas in a hotel room.

http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/02/cops-find-ricin.html

The location is very close to where I live, two or three miles as the crow flies.

Ricin has an average lethal dose in humans of 0.2 milligrams (1/5,000th of a gram), though some sources give higher figures.[1] A pinhead-sized amount can kill an adult.

I had never even heard of this stuf... but jesus.

Should be interesting to see where they say it came from, and why it was there.

yeah thats the stuff the KGB used to off a defector or rival spy with an umbrella. Supposedly the tiny metal bb, with little holes drilled in it to contain ricin, that was 'bumped' into the guy was soo tiny he did not even notice it beyond the 'accidental' jab. That stuff is unholy potent and comes from castor beans which are very common, where I grew up in southern California they were everywhere and grew to small trees.

Very close to the RIO, Palms, Ceasers, Bellagio, Paris, and many of the main hotels on the strip.

They said the hotel is near Valley View and Flamingo.

Wow, wonder exactly why he was trying to gather the stuff. In a hotel room? That doesn't sound suspicious at all..

Wtf, is he trying to get attention or something? Making ricin, ingesting some, then calling the cops and reporting difficulty breathing? What an idiot.

indeed, this is not the first case i have heard of where too many beans have caused respiratory problems for a number of people.

I pass that corner on my way to work each day.

I think some dude in Japan used that stuff in the subways of Japan, if I recall correctly.

As to why Las Vegas; Vegas is seen in some circles, it is surmised, as a good ( higher than average ) terrorist target.

edit >> Apparently, the authorities don't think terrorism was involved in this one.

Probably just some friggin' lunatic wanting his moment of "glory". Looks like he got it, but not how he'd planned.

I think they (the sect) used 'Sarin' gas in Japan!

With Ricin I think you have to inject or digest it in some way to make it work?

I sure as hell would be paranoid if something as small as 1/5,000th of a gram could kill me. I'm not sure if Ricin qualifies as medicine like aspirin and the like but it is used to kill off cancer cells[noted:kill;)]

It's about time an incident isn't given the "terrorist" label. Where can someone buy Castor beans?

I thought the exact same well. Kudos to the media and the police for not fearmongering.
I believe they grow wild in a lot of the country.

I don't think it was terrorist related either. My take on it was some nut case with some kind of foolish idea got in over his head.

One thing I'd like to note is that I guarentee the powers that be sure don't want that kind of label attached to something that happened here. They are real sensitive to things that might impact the steady flow of $$! Can't scare away the visiting money for God's sake!

Keep Nevada green, dagnabbit!

Where did it say anything about ricin oil?

The stuff found in the hotel was vials of ricin powder which, like was previously stated, only takes an ammount the size of a pinhead to kill a grown man.

Read the fing article next time.

Ricin is poisonous if inhaled, injected, or ingested, acting as a toxin by the inhibition of protein synthesis. it isent hard to make it, its cheap and there is no antidote.. :hm:

I don't understand why people refer to things they see in the American media as if the country as a whole shares the opinion. "The USA is paranoid" or "things the USA did". This is very ignorant commentary.

You're thinking of Castor oil, Ricin is an extract of an extract. Its exactly what the process of making castor oil removes

American media blows...But ya I am pleased with how they dealt with this matter. If it is worse than anthrax I was expecting a crap ton of horrible press, seems the news is focused on the election atm, or this was just contained well.

I can't say for sure, but this stuff cant be dispersed via the air. It needs to be ingested or injected to work.

So really, this was not much of a threat.

It can be dispersed by air.

How you could be exposed to ricin

* It would take a deliberate act to make ricin and use it to poison people. Accidental exposure to ricin is highly unlikely.
* People can breathe in ricin mist or powder and be poisoned.
* Ricin can also get into water or food and then be swallowed.
* Pellets of ricin, or ricin dissolved in a liquid, can be injected into people’s bodies.
* Depending on the route of exposure (such as injection or inhalation), as little as 500 micrograms of ricin could be enough to kill an adult. A 500-microgram dose of ricin would be about the size of the head of a pin. A greater amount would likely be needed to kill people if the ricin were swallowed.
* In 1978, Georgi Markov, a Bulgarian writer and journalist who was living in London, died after he was attacked by a man with an umbrella. The umbrella had been rigged to inject a poison ricin pellet under Markov’s skin.
* Some reports have indicated that ricin may have been used in the Iran-Iraq war during the 1980s and that quantities of ricin were found in Al Qaeda caves in Afghanistan.
* Ricin poisoning is not contagious. It cannot be spread from person to person through casual contact.
