I have the 2nd edition black Icemat and it's the best mousepad i've ever had.
I can't really say that it improves my gaming but it makes it easier imho.

Only downside is that you have to clean it all the time. So that nothing scratches the surface and the mouse glides properly. AND it's quite expensive.
