Well, basically i've read something about this, can't remember where..but well basically some geezer explains how to 'trim' your SATA cables to the length you want them (and not 13" longer then you actually need!).
I had a bash last night, got a decent cable, cut one of the ends of, cut the cable to the length i wanted it, and then soldered the end back on to the cable, making sure that the cables went in the right place (4 DATA cables and then 3 GND cables).
Once i finished, whacked it in, connected a spare SATA harddrive, worked perfectly.
So tomorrow, I'm going to go and buy about 10 of them and do the same to all of them, and then hopefully get my RAID 10 from this:

to: well, something like this:

Once i've finished, i'll probably post some pics and stuff, benchmark before and after and see if it's made an(if any) improvement.
Or well, give back something because i've learn shed loads from you peoplz.

Careful of reflections on the bus, you probably don't want to make the cables shorter than 6" (haven't looked at the spec in detail, it's also related to the frequency). Also if I remember correctly the differential pairs in sata should have a differential impedance of 100 ohms.

i suppose that's one way to do it. another way is to just be more careful when you build the computer.

Yeah I have always just been really delicate when organizing the sata cables. But looks clean either way.

If you mount the drives backwards you don't see any cables. I always mount mine that way.

Oh, i never thought shortened cables would make much a difference, guess i should of RTFM on sata cables :').
Well, i'm probably going to buy about 5-10 cables, and then like try each at different lengths or w/e.

Ooooooh, NICE!
Well, i've got a RAID10 & 0, 6 harddrives in total is fugly and messy and can't really do much with the cables.
ALTHOUGH, i like Jimmyz idea, that might actually work!

Oh yeah, MrBungle, do'ya know your cables, you've got sleves on them? do they come attached with the PSU? or did you like buy them separately?
I've been looking for them for ages, can't find any ><

ha ha nice build there mrbunglex... its good to be proud enough of your workmanship that you enjoy showing it off... i'm the same pal.... when i build a high end pc for a customer, i cant help build it to the same standard i would with my own... always enjoy making it look clean and tidy... i cant stand having cables everywhere...

I need longer ones for decent management. Case is really tall and drivers are at the top.

not to steal the thread but is there something on repairing the data cable for sata. my long one had a little accident.
the cheao plastic broke off so theres no way for it to stay on the drive
