So, according to HW Monitor and Everest
Vista = 35c idle/ 55c load
XP = 20c idle/ 35c load
What gives?

bios shows around 35c, but BIOS is also loading the cpu a bit too.

I'm sure BIOS is generating a lesser load than XP.
I'd be interested to see what it says in Linux.

What does latest coretemp say? I would trust it or the very latest beta of Everest.

BIOS generates alot more load than idling in Windows.
I'd say the Vista temps are correct though.

Yes, Vista is correct. If it read the wrong tjunction, your temps will be 15C off. Just add 15C to your XP temps and you get a accurate picture.

How does the BIOS do that? It is just sitting there, windows is tinkering with stuff half the time :confused:

Try it, load up your BIOS and let it sit in the BIOS screen for 15-30 mins, your CPU will heat up well past the point of the temperature it idles at in Windows. I don't have a technical explanation, but that's always been the case in my experience.

It's possible BIOS puts a single thread load on the cpu for pre-boot temperature testing
