Just finished building my new rig and installed a Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Music for the sound card. Had no sound despite having loaded the newest drivers, reseating the card, testing my 5.1 speaker system etc.
When I go to Device Manager I find that it shows two onboard ATI HD Sound listings.
First I went into bios and have disabled the ATI onboard sound there but nothing changes.
Then I went back to device manager and deinstalled both devices there. After a reboot, they are gone, but you dont have the option of selecting anything else. When you select find new device, instead of locking onto the X-Fi card, it finds the ATI HD stuff again.
When I do look at the SB X-Fi under device manager it says it is working fine, verifies the drivers and everything else.
How do I fix this? I'm going crazy being unable to play any games to test out the new pc. Thanks for any help.

What video card are you using? The ATI listing should not be your onboard audio. The onboard audio is listed as SoundMAX.

I am using two Asus HD 3870's in Crossfire mode. I am at a complete loss as to how they could have anything at all to do with audio, or how you would disable that feature.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. This problem is starting to make me crazy. I had all day yesterday and today set aside to do some gaming on the new rig and can't do anything without sound!

The audio devices shown do indeed come from the video cards. The video cards can do sound over dvi/hdmi. If you do not see SoundMAX listed in the device manager, then you have disabled the onboard soundcard. Just make sure your default devie for audio is your X-Fi.

Thanks Gunlance. But the problem is that the default device for audio shows up only as the ATI HD Sound option. There is a pull down, but that also only lists the same option. The X-Fi is shown as the midi sound option only. How do I fix this?

Are you using XP or vista? Sounds like the install of the X-Fi didn't go as planned. I would try and uninstall of X-Fi stuff and reinstall. I presume that the X-Fi is a PCI soundcard?

The de-install/reinstall of the X-Fi took care of things. Thanks for your help Gunlance.
Since device manager and everything else said the drivers were properly installed, and the device was working proprerly, I hadn't considerd that approach.
Thanks again. I'm off to do some gaming :)
