Well I have the system listed below using the supplied sound card that cam with the mother board and went from XP to vista 64 and the optical quit working, it is in pcie slot 1 the black on and , I have installed the newest drivers from asus and have tried the built in drivers and nothing changed. The spdif and everything else is working but the optical out doesn't even light up.
Any help or enlightenment on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Strange the optical wouldn't even light. Vista 64 gives many people trouble.
You configured the sound device in the Audio control panel of Vista?
Did you do anything else? open the case install a HDD etc? Doesn't the FX have a small addin card for the outputs can you verify that is pushed right into the socket.

VISTA gives me three options, the HDMI output for the video card, Speakers, and SPDIF, It is set to spdif which list optical out as a port.
The card is in place and the outputs and inputs are working.
as far as doing anything else the whole system was disassembled and put back together, so I could redo the mounting of the pump and reservoir.
I don't know what else to do I'm gonna try to track down a live CD of xp and see if it works there. Thanks for the help though. I have just got to be missing something.
