Im wondering if anyone has any suggestions on some good, low priced Vacuum Pumps for working on phase change systems. Used isnt a problem. I just need to know what to look for, names, sizes, amount of vacuum to pull.

Id love to get one for under $100.

Id also like to look at some guages. I notice alot are noted for which refridgerant theyre used on. I take it you cannot mix certain guages with certain refridgerants?

Thanks guys.

XS is the best.

ok well i like robinair 6cfm 2 stage 25micron
but you can convert a old compressor into a very good vacuum pump for little to nothing.
as far as gauges man i have 4 sets here now ranging from $250 4 hose set to a $50 set.
just look for a set that is not rated for r134a.they use special fitting.just pic you up a set of cheap r22/502 gauges.
johnstone supply has a good set of gauges on sale this month for only $49.99....

Awesome, I was actually looking at some used Robinair's on ebay. Im glad I was looking in the right direction.

Thanks for the heads up on the guages, I prob would have bought those R134's without knowing.

Im excited to start learning/playing some in the AC trade.

Itll give me something to avert my attension in between classwork at school, and finally use some of that thermo.

i bought some used robinair gauges on ebay and they leak like crazy, the o-rings on the hoses are completely shot and lose 5psi/hr out of my system. i would get the johnstone deal, $49.99 is a steal. if i wanted to get new hoses for my set of gauges the hoses alone would cost me more than $49.99 new...

Yeah, $50 is a damn good price. Ill jump on that.

The pump I dont mind getting used, theyre like $300-500 new. Not for my budget. Especially if Im just hobbying.

EDIT: Also while Im at it, I should look into a good J-type or T-type thermocouple and indicator. Any suggestions? The indicator im sure I can pick up for pretty cheap on ebay.

Heres a sweet T-type made for NASA (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2551394620&category=25412) Probably close to mil-spec.

Check Ebay for both J-type or T-type thermocouple and indicator. I have managed to lose several auctions so far, but will snag one sooner or later. :D

Ellsworth you can buy replacement o rings for your gauges I replaced mine when they leak, especially when I pull the vacuum I want them to be dependable.

i asked my refrigeration tech friend if i should do that and he said he has never had a successful o-ring replacement so i never bothered. back before i knew my hoses leaked i left them on my system running for hours and the suction side would slowly pull in air and my high side pressures would get really high. ebay sells hoses for really cheap that come new in the package, i might look into that or just get a new set from johnstone, they have a location not but a few miles from my house :D. btw where did you get your o-rings and how do you go about removing them and replacing them. pm me if you want as to not crap in this thread too much
