I've seen this before on a good HD, what worked for me was downloading the HD diags from the manufacturer's site and writing zero's to the entire HD (make it look like a brand-new drive with no format on it).

Sure wish XP wasn't so unpredictably picky about the HD...

So what do you think I should do install win98se then do the HDD diagnostics? question if it's saying cannot copy file whats the more likely problem ram,cpu,video,HDD?....

Try booting off a w98 boot disk, then run fdisk and delete all partitions. Then reboot with the w2k cd and start from scratch. Format in the ntfs format and procede with fresh install

Sure thing, first boot off the w98 floppy boot disk (If you don't have one, dl it here (http://koti.mbnet.fi/~nibz/bootdisks/boot98se.exe)). It's an exe, so just put a formatted floppy in and hit open and it'll create the floppy for you.

Once you've booted off the floppy, you'll end up at a A: prompt. Type in "Fdisk". first it'll ask you if you want to enable large disk support, enter yes. then you'll have four options, #4 will display all partitions on the hdd. Then once you know what type and how many partitions are on there, #3 will be the process for deleting them. Once you've deleted all partitions, try #4 once more to make sure there's nothing left.

Once you've accomplished that, eject the floppy and put the w2k cd in. Upon reboot, go into the bios and change 1st boot option to cdrom. Then proceed to boot off the cd, it will guide you through the rest.
