View Full Version : Is My OCZ Going To Hold Up?

I'm currently awaiting my DFI mobo to complete the build in my sig but last night i installed the BFG 8800GTS OC, the X-FI soundcard and 2 ccfl's(still have 2 more going in) in my AMD Opteron170@2.9GHz, DFI LP NF4 Ultra-D rig. I'm running 2 hdd's, 1X92mm Tornado, 4X80mm Tornado's, 1X140mm Blue Led Fan, 1 NEC DVD drive and the fans are all hooked up to a Sunbeam Rheobus and all this stuff is being run by my old trusty OCZ Powerstream 600w PSU.

Well i ran 3dmark06 to test my rig out and the first run went fine but when i tried to run it again my pc locked up at the 3dmark main screen. So this morning i decided to run the Crysis demo and watch the leds on the back of the psu to see if they were turning yellow or red and sure enough the 3.3v and 12v rails were flickering red. Well then i broke out my multimeter while still running the demo, measured all the rails and they were indeed low. So while still measuring each rail i proceeded to give them more juice while staying within +-5%, testing full load and idle and this fixed my problem. The rails are all in spec.

My concern is will this psu be enough for the X3210 Xeon, DFI LT X38, 4Gb's of ram, OCZ XTC ram cooler and another fan(120mm 100+ CFM Panaflo)? I can probably crank up the rails some more but doesn't that create more heat and put more strain on the psu? I'm already thinking of opening it up and cleaning it out cause i haven't done so in the 2 yrs i have had it + i bought it second hand. Another thing that's bugging me is that this psu doesn't have PFC. I was thinking about getting an OCZ GameXStream 600-700w psu but besides having active PFC i'm not sure if that is even a worthy upgrade. I know the 4X12v rails aren't really going to benefit my single gpu system much and i don't like how OCZ did away with the adjustable rails on the back. Why did they do this anyway? So what do you guys think? Should i invest in a new psu or will this one do a little while longer?

Ok i decided to get a new one (...and talked the wife into it. :p: ) I pretty much decided to get this (http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=CA6276805) one since i read that the OCZ is not very good and i would like a single beefy 12v rail. Anyone know the cheapest and best place to buy it? I found this (http://www.electronicsshowplace.com/ocz-silencer-750w-quad-psu-power-supply-(black)-169235.html?network=pricegrabber) site through Pricegrabber but i'm not sure if i can trust them.

On the other hand, i was just thinking i really do want a modular psu. Would this Corsair (http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=CA6200027) be enough for me? I know it is pretty popular around here but it has 3X12v rails so i'm not sure if that is what i need.

that p\s should be good.hell i dont really know anymore about powersupplys cause i know that %70 of companys that put there sticker on em are only rebranding them and not actually making em.anyway nice build man and good luck.

other thought-
one company that i found make there own p\s and are ROCK solid for the lowest money are the (fsp) fulton source powersupplys.i mean there $56 500 watt ps is a true 500 watt monster for the cash.i imagine for the 1,000 watt they sell as well is worth every penny.

Thanks, hmm well it is starting to get up there in age and my kid's are getting my old cpu, mobo, and 7800GT so they will need a new psu for that anyway. I figure why not get myself something i know will run this rig. :) So no one has any other suggestions?

I just realized that the PC&P PSU's i linked to are not exactly the same name. The second link has OCZ's name on it, wth? I also like the specs on this Corsair PSU (http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A6245001&cmp=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r#). So i'm still undecided. Oh yeah and i'm trying to stay under $150.

OCZ owns PCP&C :)

Not sure why you say OCZ is not very good, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, I guess.

The PCP&C unit will do very well for you.

Definitely go with the Corsair. I'd get an HX620 in your situation. Amazing PSU's, especially for the price, plus, Modular FTW! :)

My old school 520 powerstream OCZ can run np all your stuff, no even need tune rails output.

Got 3 hd on it and was even fine with high voltages under phase cooling.

Well i have read about the GameXstream PSU's having a bad ripple effect or something but i still love my Powerstream. :)

@NickS, i went ahead and ordered one last night. :toast:

Yep the GameXStream's had poor ripple characteristics, but only at very high load. They're still a decent unit, but by todays standards, not so much. A year ago they were great though. Plus a lot of them had issues with the fan being stuck at 100% (aka loud as funk).

I'm glad you ordered the Corsair! You'll love it :D Very efficient, quiet, sleek lookin' PSU's.

The Corsair has been rock solid so far. I was getting a 2sec delay of boot up when i pushed the power button with the OCZ and my old rig. With my new setup, the delay is gone and this rig is running rock stable. Great deal on the PSU too, $118 after m.i.r. :)
