I guess they wanted to be on top by a larger margin
I don't like this.
But as Intel’s “Extreme” product it also commands an “Extreme” price-tag of over £900
£ 900 = $ 1,753.11 USD

How many people pay +$1500 for a CPU, when they can get the same speed with overclocking and save some +$1000? Well, those chips are for demonstrating and hyping anyway, and many, if not all of those who have tested them haven't paid for them anyway. :p

I paid 1000 for an fx-60 because of an unlocked multiplier.
I am a student. I can't pull money out of my ass like most people here.
Anything over $200 for a cpu is too much.

Yeah, I know few of those who have paid some ~800-1200 for a CPU, but a $1700... Well, for benching/HC-overclocking then yeah, if one has alot of money, but certainly not for 24/7 use... Besides the HC/Xtreme overclockers are rather minority anyway of the whole OC community, then remember that overclockers are minority of customers anyway...
I have always bought the lowest-end possible and OC'd it to the max which has been enough for my use, even though I just LOVE overclocking. Cheap parts = more parts = more time tweaking + OC'ing. ;) But as I said, and as it has been already known, these "extreme-end" CPUs are just for marketting and hype.

Oh wait... it's not. I spent $75 for a low-end CPU to OC the heck out of it... too bad my IP35-E is flaky at best. Anyways--if I was a millionaire OC'er, I'd buy an Extreme Edition. Actually... no I wouldn't. I'd buy two server chips and then beat the Extreme Edition chips. Love the new i5400 chipsets--dual PCI Express for Radeon HD3870X2's in CFX4.
You can somewhat justify the QX9650's price, thanks to the lower multis on the regular chips. But this thing? Forget it. Doesn't seem to clock any higher/better, despite the cost. 99% of these chips will probably wind up in boutique computer systems.

and you would pay $1,000 more for an unlocked multi????? that does not justify the price

Agreed. 5-6 times the price for 200-300MHz more?
