I think one of best turn arounds of the year would be when HDDVD would win. I for one do not see that happening if the consumer just accepts the half-assed Blu-Ray. I vote HD-DVD.

Say HD-DVD 3 times fast. Not exactly the most creative name for a product.
Blu-ray is a better product and deserves to win.

Personally I think the name HD-DVD is fine, it follows other naming conventions like HDTV and such. Although I don't think it is the better technology, blu-ray should be the winner IMO.

Good since I own one and compared to my 360 Elite is miles better when not gaming hehe. I mean Audio/Video wise there is no contest. So even if the Xbox had an integrated HD DVD drive from the beginning it would still be a half baked solution without HDMI 1.3 for DTS HD MA and Dolby True HD. On the other hand the PS3 still does not play DTS HD Master Audio and the ridiculous changing BD Profiles have pissed off many consumers that bought early BD players only to find now that some movies will not play at all.

I'm going to go ahead and tell you that this is incorrect. Saying that the result of something this complex is because of 1 reason alone is ridiculous. However, I will say that it was a very smart move by Sony, even if it was a bit of a gamble. It definitely had a very big impact on the format war. I guess Sony isn't that stupid after all eh? Guys?

Which is funny, because dozens (if not hundreds) of "experts" just on this site alone said that the Playstation 3 will fail soley because of the Blu-ray drive. That's not counting the millions of other people on the web around the world who claimed that the worst decision Sony made with the PS3 was the inclusion of the Blu-ray drive as standard.
Look who's talking now?

I'm glad Sony is sticking it to all the haters and doubters (the ones that thought so highly of them in the PS2 era). Yeah, it sounds fanboyish, get over it.

I think we are all missing the point, we all knew that some day, shape and form one format of high definition video media would have to win over the other.
I don't have either format right now because I didn't want to spend the money to buy a player and later to learn that I bought the wrong format. I personally would have hoped that it would be Blu-Ray that would would win and I think it was inevitable that Blu-Ray would win for the following reasons.
BD-R's are now capable of storing 50 Gigs of data...that's a ton of space for a single disk and the sooner we have more manufacturers of BD-R and BD-RE (or should be called BD-R/W's) the cheaper in the long run it will be.
BD has the Blu-Ray Disk Association - Members include:
Apple Inc., Dell Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Hitachi, Ltd. , LG Electronics , Mitsubishi Electric , Panasonic , Pioneer Corporation , Royal Philips Electronics , Samsung electronics , Sharp Corporation , Sony Corporation , Sun Microsystems , TDK Corporation , Twentieth Century Fox , Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment , Warner Home Video Inc.,
Along with movie studios not mentioned above, MGM Studios, New Line Cinema, and now Warner Brothers.
Those are the who's who of tech and media, and now seeing Best Buy and Target Corp both actively promoting Blu-Ray it's pretty much a done deal. I suppose the only winners out there are the ones who chose Blu-Ray players or the one who bought the players that can play both Blu-Ray and HD DVD.

Toshiba is looking at dropping it too, so really Microsoft is just supporting it. That's not good. I liked HD-D for the backwards compatibility really, but Blu-Ray is really having a decent run. Problem is, short of retooling the 360, what is MS going to do with HD-D?

At the worst they can make a blu-ray add on just like the HD-DVD. Personally I don't care what they do so long as the better format wins, blu-ray IMO.

Yeah, but an addon that costs just as much as another player, and does what? What i was looking at is increasing the media size for games. 9GB isn't enough, and despite the sega-cd doing it, i don't think people would buy an HDDVD drive just to play certain games. Maybe, sell those games in either a special, hybrid disk (HD side a, regular side b) or a 2 disk (how expensive is a dvd to stamp?) format, that gives you the extra content with the HD drive.

C'mon man, I'm sure you're not that oblivious. It's written right there in your post after all. You copy and pasted the Blu-Ray support list and then added the HD DVD list. Only you're missing all the studios that support HD DVD. Bad information is as good as no information.

Who cares who paid who, did what to who, or said what to who to get anyone to change sides. That may not have been the case anyways, HD DVD has been on a slow death for the past several months, once 1 big company recognized this and jumped ship so did many others. Companies behind HD DVD have been paid off before too. This is how business works, they are in it to make money, not to please fanboys.
Edit: Oh, and you should go lookup the companies that are behind and supporting blu-ray, a whole lot more than just Sony. Many of them there from the beginning.

Better marketing strategy will always win in these circumstances. The better marketing is Blu-ray. For those looking for a come back by HD-DVD. It would take something completely ridiculous to do that. Like random tornados that all of a sudden spawn at every Blu-ray manufacturing location at once, destroying them and forcing HD-DVD to the public for 6 months or so.

Truth. HD DVD's marketing is complete crap, while Blu-Ray advertisements are everywhere. On TV, in movie theaters, in magazines, you name it. Toshiba would have a much better chance if it wasn't for their useless marketing. What does a gigantic company not understand about advertising? I think Toshiba took too many things for granted when they had a chance to pull ahead. Sony was way more aggressive and it shows.

While I want to say thank you for posting news, I need to ask you to post a bit about the story, not just links. Something like this would be good.
Netflix to cease carrying new HD DVD titles
The tide continues to turn in the ongoing high-definition format war. Netflix, the first choice in online movie rental service in the U.S., today announced that it will exclusively stock Blu-ray Disc as the only choice for its customers looking for high-definition content.
