Has anyone done this and sounded good?
I need info on building a good 2.1 computer speakers. I guess the hardest part would finding an amp to power the sub as well as front speakers.
All help is appreciated.

@DirtWarrior, You can also use a analog patch to the receiver, Buy some minijack to dual RCA connectors. The minijack connects to the soundcard and the two RCA cables connect to the receivers inputs. Make sure you research the gear you buy. Many guys just buy certain gear becasue it has a certain name but they end up with a POS entry level unit that has poor sound quality compared to other units by the same company.
Consider your sound card as any other piece of audio gear. It has input and outputs that are compatible with other audio gear. It is just a matter of cables and adapters to get it to work with other gear. The more you work with soundcards and other audio gear you will find you need many different type of cables and adapters. I have a large tupperware container full of many different types of audio cables and a tackle box full of adapters for changing one type of cable to another. Hope this helps.

It does. I thought it would hooh up this way. Mostly worried about the impedance when hooking up that way. Do you think I will get a hum? CD inputs or tape or does it matter?

No,no....No impedance issues, they don't come into play when connecting up line level gear. What your doing is connecting a line-level device (soundcard) to a receiver. The soundcard is similar to a CD player or tape deck, just a line level device. No different to the receiver. I suggest using the CD inputs, if you have them.
connect the front channels outputs of the soundcard to the right/left inputs on a stereo receiver. If you have a surround card and a surround receiver then you use more cables to more inputs. It is all very simple really, once you understand it. Hook up the soundcard to the receiver the same way you would hook up a CD player. Have fun.

the dayton reference series stuff is brilliant. this sub is my fav! Frequency range is 18 - 800 Hz, with the fs @ 18 Hz.

It's Line Level sound so impedance doesn't matter. Connect to CD-In on newer receivers and Tape-In on Vintage ones. Wayyyyyyy to damned bad younger folks here don't know much about Vintage eqipment.

Stuff like this doesn't matter if you use cans or speakers.

@Dirtwarrior, If you want to use a receiver and aren't already set on which one your gonna use..look at the ONKYO HTIB gear. You can get a resonable setup for a very low price. It gives you a starting point and places you can upgrade in the future. You get a receiver, 4 sats, center and a powered sub refurbed Onkyo system for $199 -decent place to start if your trying to save money.
ONKYO HT-SR600 (http://www.shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?productid=HT-SR600&modelid=127&group_id=1&detail=1&ext_war=1)
If you want something new and have the cash they have great new systems also. Enjoy your new audio build
